Why I Chose the Sony RX100V over the RX100VA and RX100VI
It was time to upgrade my beloved Sony RX100 Mark I to something a bit more updated. I decided not to go with the latest and greatest for many reasons.

How does the low light picture quality of the V compare to the III? I have the III and am afraid it will break soon as it's been through a lot. It seems like it's taking longer to focus and turn on/off and I've had to repair a bunch of chips and scratches on it. If I do need to replace it would the V be an improvement with pictures over the III? I do mainly pictures in restaurants or around town as well as some plants/animals. I also like to do some continuous shooting of sports. Another big use is family trips to Disney.

Nice review with solid rationale. FYI for those considering the V, VA, VI or earlier generations, TriState Camera now has the VA brand new for $718 which is cheaper than their price for both the V and the IV. Not sure why they're selling it for less than the V AND EVEN the IV. Didn't question it; just hit "buy now." :)

Excellent review! I have the Mark1 as well, and tomorrow I may get the 5A. Why, instead of just the 5? I recently bought a great Zhiyun Crane M2 stabilizer which is great for video, but none of my cameras are compatible with the Wi-Fi, and I hate the thought of controlling both (the Zhiyun and RX100 or my Lumix LX100) with an iPhone or whatever. I just want to be able to zoom in and out and take the occasional photo with the Zhiyun, but it mentions a Sony RX100VA in it's list of compatible cameras, and not the V. By the way, if you don't have a gimbal-type device and since you enjoy shooting video, I'd recommend something like the Zhiyun Crane M2, it's great! About $369 here in Toronto, but I'd seen it for $269 at B&H in the U.S.

Good information but definitely oriented to your type of indoor, close up photography being the driving factor. For Landscape photographers the Mark vii ( or Mark Vi ) would be a more flexible choice. This assumes you are not concerned about a few hundred bucks to get what you want or prefer. The one stop aperture difference is almost a non factor with the iso range, shutter speed flexibility and sensor quality in the Mark vii or vi. Really at iso 1000 or < the noise is a non factor, unless you are focused only on macro photography. Also 3cm difference in focal distance (1.18”) is mute when you have a zoom. While I appreciate you discussing value Inam more interested in performance and what differences exist between the cameras. Anyone considering video or stacked HDR the Mark vii is a generation forward from the Mark V ( I own a Mark IV ) and worthy of the price difference IMO.

You couldn't have put it better how good the rx100v is and how and what you use it for, the mark 6 is good for a further distance if your doing land scape and birds, can you justify buying 2 cameras for two different types of photography, both very portable and usable cameras on the market today. not a bad idea if you think about it, what a good and interesting veiw on why and what camera.

Picked up a mark V for 425, replaces my gx8 with 20mm 1.7 quite nicely and includes a useful bounce flash. image/quality and stabilization seem to be on par and it is much more pocketable and has better af and more focal length options to boot. The only downside is no flippy screen and the viewfinder is nowhere near as nice and doesn't tilt up
@Kinsiderations

If you post pictures mostly online like on Instagram and Facebook, then a camera phone will be fine. If you're into photo editing, taking pictures in low light, and want manual control, a camera like this will produce better results and at a much higher resolution.

I got a RX100V used, like new, for around $750 with 3 batteries, and external charger. With the money saved, I purchased a stabilizer for it, and saved some cash for another camera lens. Loving the MarkV and very happy with the quality. If I had the money in my budget to purchase new and the MarkV and MarkVA are same price, then yes, MarkVA would be the logical choice. The thing is, the second hand market has lots of MarkV's ranging around $700 and I don't think the MarkVA's upgrades are that substantial. That's one of the reasons I went used and saved some money.

I am watching this a year later, and this might seem like a strange comment since I am mostly a Sony shooter, but your description of your photographic needs suggests to me that you would be most suited to the Panasonic LX100 II. The Panny is far better than the RX100 for macro, and is better in low light as it has a larger sensor. It has a sensationally good f1.7-2.8 24-75mm lens. TheSony shines with SloMo and the flippy screen. I am currently looking at adding a compact to my GoPro kit to add zoom capability and was looking at the RX100 VA because of the lens. In the end, however, I have decided to get two cameras - the RX100 VII for SloMo and extra reach, and the LX100 II for fast aperture, low light, and macro. All of them work well on the little Feiyu Tech G6 Plus gimbal and when I upgrade to the new GoPro Hero 8 I will have a perfect small video package. I have been on Hero 4 for years, and looking at how good small cameras are getting decided to replace a couple of my larger cameras with a more complete small camera package. There was a time when compacts were crap for amateurs, but times have changed and both the RX100 series and LX series are pocket powerhouses with amazing capabilities, and of course GoPro continues to become a more and more capable mainstream camera.

Very poor explanations in this video. You don't state why the VI and up have a higher aperture, it's because they are different lenses and extend to 200mm. It would be impossible to keep a 1.8 aperture on a lens that small for that focal range. Also for macro, the further away you are from the subject the less light you'll be blocking. - macro shooters want distance from their subjects, especially bugs which wont stick around the closer you get. The macro shot from the Mk1 looks like a potato took it compared to the Mk5.
