This was terrific, sympathetic performance by Mature. While Richard Widmark’s creepy, unsettling performance got most of the press, it’s Mature who anchors the film, giving audiences somebody to root for, no matter how the cards were stacked against him.

Victor Mature wonderful in this. But Widmark's psycho is absolutely riveting - that laugh, the evil mania. He must have been the 'first of kind' for this kind of role.

Widmark's laugh is priceless. Especially with his cheshire grin with the huge overbite. Reminds me of that other blonde cad actor with the sing songy voice, who was in the film with Edward G Robinson about that painting in the window, and the cad was the boyfriend who pretended his girl painted the pictures but Robinson really painted them.

Heck of an outstanding film noir with all the 1947 architecture, furniture and rolling stock. Victor Mature puts on a good show as usual... and our hero, everywhere since, gets his big introduction by acting the real nasty hateful character. Thanks GEM: F.L.

One of Mature’s best screen portrayals & here for the first time is Widmark in an astonishing performance that might have netted him an Oscar had he not been up against Santa Claus (Edmund Gwenn) that same year. A real classic with Colleen Grey as appealing as always as Mature’s new wife. She was also in another memorable noir,NIGHTMARE ALLEY, that year. 1947 in fact has 3 of the best noirs of all, IMO, the third being OUT OF THE PAST.

Great movie, great acting. Richard Whitmark's character, Udo, was creepy. Gave me the chills. The role reminded me of the Riddler's character in the 1960s Batman series. Widmark however modeled his Udo character after the Batman comics archenemy, the Joker. Frank Gorshin, who played the Riddler in the TV series, modeled his deranged cackle after Widmark's Udo.

Richard Widmark plays the character of an arrogant punk quite well, but his portrayal of a real badass leaves me laughing out loud. His demeanor is of that kind of person who lets his "boys" do the real wet work. But he is a psycho and his giggly mouthful of teeth just do not help this picture's believability. His giggling sounds really familiar.
