Learning to 360 on a kitefoil is a popular trick for anyone foilers looking to move on from gybes, it's also a great stepping stone to tacking and it just feels great when you pull it off! But to do it properly and consistently you need to properly understand how to fly the kite through the whole manoeuvre. Having the kite riding with you will make all the difference transforming your 360's from powered, chaotic spins, never know if you're going to explode, to gliding through the carve effortlessly every time.
We'll break the 360 into 3 stages, showing the kite and bar movements required for each stage.
Rob originally released the two short separate videos, that make up this video, on his IG and FB pages but here they are pulled together so you can refer back to them in one place. He has also included an introduction and then a summary of the 3 key points you need to focus on at the end.
How are you progressing with your 360's?
If you want help with you 360's come have a private session with Rob or Danny, or check out one of our Camps and clinics which will back in 2021.

This 360 is the version where you start riding on your heelside and carve upwind into the 360. Check out Rob's facebook page for the Toeside variation of the 360:

Wow, Rob! Your tips are amazing! Especially the part about bar position/pressure at each stage of the trick (you're the only one that talks about it!) . I watched it yesterday and then tried about 100 times non stop and managed to complete the 360 five times +-. Yuhu! Any tips on how to do wide 360's like yours? Mine are really tight.
@progressionsports
@progressionsports 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Gilad, glad its helped and good to see you are putting in the repetitions, practice does make perfect! And wider 360s will come naturally when you feel more confident riding the board and foil and not relying so heavily on pull and power from the kite. To start with you'll feel like you need the kite power to keep you balanced and often (depending on your foil) this means you push harder against the foil so it pivots around quicker. Once you start to realise that you can glide on the foil, if you keep your weight in the right place and the kite can actually just sit above you chillin and waiting for the exit, then you can carve wider arcs by just riding the foil. Keep practicing and getting a better feel for the kite position over ahead and then you'll start to be able to try different variations on the 360. Let us know how you get on!

@progressionsports
@progressionsports 3 жыл бұрын
Ha ha, I guess it could be possible though the more I think about it the "loop" ideally isn't really a loop as the kite is just following you around, so you end up with no twist in the lines, and the kite just keeps turning over head. When I'm coaching people in person we sometimes do a few practice drills where we just carve and leave the kite at 12, so people get used to the feeling of carving and stop relying on a big pull from the loop. Once you get more confident with the carve, you'll be more likely to loop the kite higher and not need much power from the kite on the exit. Sounds like its time for you to add that loop in and get those 360 completed 🤘Let us know how you get on.

After watching your videos on Gybes and Foot Swaps (and successfully completing them), I'm now working on tacks. The 360 is supposed to be a good intermediate step so I'm starting here. In the video you don't mention which hand does the pulling when sheeting in. It appears to be the back hand doing most everything, which would be the same as in a tack, is that the case?
@mashimisha
@mashimisha 3 ай бұрын
Three questions: Do you sell a more detailed video of 360s? I couldn't find one on your site. Is the reason for sheeting in the bat to provide lift or is it to accelerate the kite through downloop? I am trying this on a Flysurfer Soul 6m. Should I adjust the process of sheeting the bar in to avoid backstalling the kite?

@@blimonov No problems, just happy the videos are helping. I have stayed away from equipment reviews, only because it is very subjective and weight, height, experience and conditions all affect what may be best for an individual. Anyone who makes blanket statements like "board/kite X is the best for kitefoiling" obviously loves it and it works for them but that doesn't mean it works for you, the answer is always more nuanced! Equipment recommendations are far easier in person when you get a clearer idea of the kiter, their experience and what they want to achieve. Having said this I do have some plans for some more general discussions on areas like board size for foiling, but looking it as an overview and the pro's and con's of all the options.

Rob- I've been working on this and can somewhat nail it about 25% of the time. My biggest struggle is getting weight onto the front foot. As I initiate the carve with kite at 12 and sheeted out, I sense weight on back foot. Try as I might to get weight to the front, I have a somewhat backwards lean keeping weight on back foot. Curious as to how to get more weight on that front foot to successfully ride around the 360 rather than forcing the board around with my foot strap. Thanks in advance- Mike
@progressionsports
@progressionsports Жыл бұрын
Hey Mike. This is probably the most common issue with the carve and can happen for a few reasons. Two that you should look at: 1) I know you said your kite is at 12 and you have sheeted out BUT make sure its actually 12, not 5/10 degree before that. And though you are sheeting out as you carve ensure you stay sheeted out, as this can stall the kite and pull you towards the back of the board. It's amazing now many peopel think their kite is at 12 but its not quite - one way to do it is when you think its correct just delay an intake of breath! That half a second can be enough! 2) Foil setup - if you foil is too far back on the board, in relation to your feet/straps so that you can't properly load your front foot then it will be hard to get weight forward. Or if you feet are too close together - narrow stances are harder to transfer weight from the back to front foot with subtle control. When I'm coaching people in person 80% of the time I'm moving peoples masts forward on the board. They don't like it to start with but a few days later they come back and its all smiles! So there you go, a couple of things to focus on. let me know if either helps - if not get some gopro footage from your lines and send it to me and we could have a virtual coaching session.

I have a Moses (Sab) 633/483 wing combo and it always feels slower and more “pivoty” trying to do a 360. I make a very small percentage of my attempts but they are completely pivot style (with rapid loss of speed) instead of a nice smooth arc that maintains speed (glide) like yours. Would I be better off with a faster “glidier” type front wing like a Sab 695 or 679? Any recommendations?
@progressionsports
@progressionsports 3 жыл бұрын
I've used the 633 and though it can be quite pivoty you can definitely do long carving 360s. The lose of speed and sharp pivot in the 360 isn't uncommon and it's got nothing to do with the foil but actually your kite position. Your kite is not flying upwind with you as you carve, instead it's stalling, pulling slightly backwards and that resistances forces you and your foil to turn sharply so you can ride back towards the kite. The most likely reason is you haven't brought the kite right up to 12, you probably think you have but its probably 5/10 degrees from being dead overhead and that is enough to stop the kite flying with you. Also ensue you are sheeting right out BEFORE you carve. Don't carve until the kite is right at 12. It could also be because you are then being too aggressive with your body position. You don't need to lend back aggressively into the turn, you can stay more up over the board and the key is getting your weight forward through the second stage, because weight forward will allow you glide, weight over the tail and hence mast will pivot the foil around. So no need for a change in equipment, just work on your technique and you can definitely do long carving turns on your 633.

@@progressionsports Thanks! Your right about everything. The kite is never quite vertical when I start to carve. I sheet out when I start to carve but I always seem to sheet in too much at the half way point (apex) of the turn. It’s like I’m accidentally trying to hang off the kite. I think I’m also gonna try some attempts with just my back hand on the bar instead of both hands. I think my front hand is just not following the instructions coming from my brain! It might help me from over sheeting on the backside of the turn. Lots to work on.....(Need to put the wing foil away for a few more sessions🤪)

Hey Rom on How long You Ride your lines with this kite 15 16m 18m in order to have quick response of the kite
@progressionsports
@progressionsports 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Boris. I used the standard F-ONE Lynx bar with 24m lines on the Bandit S - these kites are very responses even on relatively long lines. Shorter lines will help some kites turn faster but you'll also lose lift which is so critical in any form of tack or 360.
@JeffreyJDavis
@JeffreyJDavis 4 жыл бұрын
Great video and super useful with the multi perspectives including the kite. You're right, I've been approaching this like a backroll and just cranking it around driving off the back foot. Here's the part that's got my mind in a moebius strip though. As you enter the loop (1:53), my brain is telling me I need to be pulling my front (left) hand to loop the kite in that direction. Obviously your right hand is the only hand on the bar, so I'm wrong. I don't think you are looping by pushing out with your right hand. What am I missing?
@progressionsports
@progressionsports 4 жыл бұрын
Where you are getting confused is that half way around the carve (at 1:53) my lines are now twisted, so by pulling with my back hand (my right hand) I am effectively flying the kite to left. That half-twist of the bar is mixing things up for you. From your perspective when riding, all you ever need to do is pull with your back hand and when you exit the full 360 the loop of the kite has then taken out the twists.
@JeffreyJDavis
@JeffreyJDavis 4 жыл бұрын
@@progressionsports my kites turn the same way whether the lines are twisted or not but I will take your word for it and just keep pulling on the back hand! ;-> Thanks for responding!

Thanks mate, glad you like you. The 360 vs Tack/H2T comes up a lot - most people find the 360 the easier first step because once you are set in there isn't any major changes in body position where as the Tack/H2T requires a fundamental change in body position as you exit the carve to get yourself in to the toeside position. The 360 is nice because you can really focus on the kite, and getting that right and no get too tangled up literally or mentally! Once you have the 360 the Tack/H2T comes relatively easily. I am gonna put a couple of short videos for the Tack/H2T and Tack/T2H as I know a lot of people are keen to get those mastered. So look out for those in the coming few weeks.

Currently trying this on my 6m kite. Would you say it's harder on smaller kites as the bar pressure is less? Finding it really hard right now but will preserve 😅
@progressionsports
@progressionsports 2 жыл бұрын
Maybe. Most people start doing 360's like a back roll on a TT - so forcing it round, carving really hard off the back foot and using the kite for power through out the carve, the loop is aggressive and pulls you out of the 360. But honestly this is not a true 360 on a foil, when done properly the kite does less of the work and you are riding the foil and board with the kite balanced over head giving you just enough pull to help with your balance. So this is why the smaller kite be harder. If you are using the kite for power then it will not feel like enough or react too quickly. But if you get the timing and balance on the board then 360's with small kites are majestic as your can use that faster, quick reacting kite to support you just when you need it but with out it giving you big surges of power. So depending on how you are attempting your 360's, I would really concentrate on the driving the board and foil through the carve using your hips and knees, weight forward and try and depend less on the kite. I do offer virtual coaching so if you have a GoPro and can mount it on your lines I can really help you get your technique cleaned up for tricks like the 360. Give me a shout if you are ever interested.

best kites for foiling?
@progressionsports
@progressionsports 4 жыл бұрын
Urmmmm, that has 100 different answers depending on who you ask! The kite you know is a good place to start but ultimately for most people a kite that is stable in the sky and drifts well, as you'll often be riding with less power that on a TT or surfboard so a light manoeuvrable kite is helpful. Most 3 strut wave or freeride kites work well (I ride F-ONE Bandits and they are perfect for foiling) but single struts are also popular particularly in the larger sizes for lighter winds (though some people who foil exclusively use single struts through their whole range). My normal recommendation is to get a single strut kite for your largest kite and then 3 strut kites from the kites down from that and then they will be good for TT and surfboard riding too. And then we have ram air foil kites but that is a whole other discussion :-D

Sheet right out =sheet out
@progressionsports
@progressionsports 3 жыл бұрын
You might think those two statements are the same but in reality when you tell people to "sheet out" most people extend their arms and that doesn't always result in the bar hitting the stopper at the end. Sheeting *right* out hopefully highlights that you might need to push your shoulders forward to get the bar fully sheeted out. So maybe I should have said "sheet out fully"! Hopefully people get the point.
