Truth is, the bulk of the work riveting an RV-series airplane together involves flush or countersunk rivets. In this installment of Metal Magic, Paul Dye explains how to both drive and squeeze these rivets and offers handy tips to getting good, repeatable results.

I enjoy watching your videos mostly because of you. If I had teachers in High school or in college I would have never fallen asleep. No matter how dry the subject you deliver.

Some close ups of the finished rivets would be nice.

Would like some close ups of the finished tasks.

This series is great, what I think would be helpful for people in either this kind of video or another one is a more realistic scenario where things are in the way and you have to hold the gun steady. Showing people more real world scenarios. I seldom have that clear an access to the backside of a driven flush rivet

Great suggestion. We'll add that to our list.

Thanks so much for this information! I needed to flush rivet a non-structural piece on an experimental airplane. After watching this video, I borrowed the correct countersink bit and pneumatic squeezer and after practice, proceeded to squeeze a line of perfectly formed rivets!

If you hold the gun in your hand and use your bird finger to squeeze the trigger it's easier on your hand and you have less of a chance of skidding across the skin while shooting flush rivets.

The adjustable ram that I bought with my squeezer specifically says not to use it on -3 rivets because the threads allow play. I tried it anyway and did notice a tendency for the rivet to want to favor squeezing just off center. Did I get a bad type of adjustable squeezer ram or do I suck? The squeezer also said not to use quick release pins for the yokes but I've noticed no difference when switching between them or the bolts it came with.

I love this back-to-basics series! Could you please do an episode on pulling flush pulled rivets al-la the Sling TSi? Specifically, I am interested in dimpling, countersinking at the correct shoulder angles (meaning, does the base material and the skin get the same angle dimple/countersink), and also the strength of the flush pulled rivets compared to "domed pull rivets" al-la the Zenith kit standard. I am considering pulling flush "pop" rivets on my project, which will NOT be a kit, but a build from scratch "one-off" similar in size and mission to the Zenair CH640, and would love your input! Thanks George

We have segments coming up in the series on how to work with pulled rivets, George.

@@KitplanesMagazine Thank you. I just thought I would ask specifically about FLUSH pulled rivets, since that is the hardest thing to find any videos on. Domed pulled rivet vids are a dime-a-dozen.

you say it's a nice flush job but you never show them close up.

I appreciate this series, but I have a bit of constructive criticism: This is a good topic, but the video is an overview of the obvious stuff with a couple of useful tips thrown in, not a how-to video… you didn’t show any closeups, didn’t explain how a beginner would set up the tools properly, and didn’t show how to tell if you did a good job. It’s interesting to see how an expert does it, but it’s not very useful for a first-timer. If these things are covered in other videos, mention it and provide links, because when people are searching for a tutorial on a specific topic, they’re not sitting down to watch the entire series from start to finish, hoping the information is in there somewhere. It’s okay to repeat information in separate videos, too. Thanks

Low-rate video - explains how to do pro riveting, no close-ups of finished rivets for idea of what you're shooting for. Try better next time.
