Saving a Sick and Starving Kitten - How Supportive Care Saved Jimmy

Kitten Lady

4 жыл бұрын

If you've rescued a sick kitten, please work with a veterinarian to assess and treat! Every kitten is different, and it's important to work with a vet to know what your specific kitten needs. In this video, you'll see how simple supportive care measures like subcutaneous fluids, B12, a heat source, antibiotics, and proper nutrition can save the life of a kitten. Jimmy was starved and emaciated when he arrived, but within days, he was on track to be a healthy and happy young cat!

But anyone can do this work, and Hannah has a lot of experience and a lot of resources. I'm not trying to downplay what she does, not at all! But when we put people on a pedestal like this, we imply that they're good at the thing because of some intrinsic quality rather than hard work and experience. I don't have her funding or her setup, but I know how to do a lot of what she does and I can use it to save kittens. I wasn't born knowing all that.

"That she can still cry, and not become robotic after seeing this so often, truly speaks to this woman's beautiful soul. I was bawling hearing her happy/ bittersweet tears." I don't do what Hannah does, personally. But I am a rather old man, now, and there has always been a cat in the family.... at least one. Unfortunately, since cats don't live forever, I've seen a lot of them to the rainbow bridge. It never gets any easier.

My hubby found a critical kitten on the side of the road in December. The vet said he was hit by a car which caused him to go blind and his nose was caked shut with dry blood, on top of that he had pnenomia. They didn't think he would make it, but I could tell he was such a strong little guy and I was right! Hes a huge chunky monkey now and is best friends with another one of my rescues :)

Now me too. I've given homes &/or found them for between 60-80, maybe even a 100 over the years. I have a story about a very young LA freeway street pigeon that was fairly unique, he was ready to go back to the wilds in a much better area about 5-6 yrs. later & started his own family. He was a stud by then, LoL, sweet bird. I had PhD avian specialists on the line, in upscale areas who told me he was too far gone & was going to die...... another erroneous genius.

Jimmy is so adorable! Years back, I had a cat named Tucker who was nearly identical to Jimmy. Tucker was the sweetest boy, just so laid back and handsome. Everyone fell in love with him. He was diabetic, so he needed insulin shots twice a day and extra trips to the vet for bloodwork. All of the vet techs would give him so many kisses and hugs when he came in. I think that they were just as heartbroken as I was when he passed away at the age of 17.

It is very hard yes. However if you turn it around on is head and think about it, if people DON"T do this, then wee kittens like this cannot be saved as there is no one to foster them??? I guess it is thinking about them and not our heart at the end? I too thought I could not foster, but the alternative is too grim :)

I have a theory: When a kitten gets an injection it probably just feels like one of their siblings just bit or scratched them. Getting poked by sharp things (kitten claws, kitten teeth) is probably a totally ordinary and not all too frightening thing for kittens.

Oh and also make sure to get all the bubbles out by tapping the needle and squirting a little out cause that can be painful and bad for them. If you’re wanting to know what my credentials are so that you don’t make a mistake, I was partially taught how to give subcutaneous injections and how to stitch wounds (on a banana, again partially trained) by researchers who work with animals and I think there were med students at CU in colorado as a summer camp thing in 6th grade (I’m in 7th now)

I had a kitten my son named Jupiter. It was a few years ago. I live on an old farm (no more farm animals) and we have a lot of outside cats. One of the mommas had a litter of kittens and most if them got sick and passed away. I tried to save as many as I could. Jupiter was the last one that I had brought inside as much as possible to help her. She died on my birthday. She was barley a month old.

Jupiter was lucky to have you, and obviously had the best possible life - that you provided! ♥️

Seeing the kittens looking so bad makes me think of these 3 kittens I tried to rescue last summer. They were dumped in the parking lot of my work in a plastic tote with trash and dirty clothes. Two of them didn’t make it. They were very bad off, but the third one did and he’s currently sleeping on his bed in my room. I named him Jojo after my favorite anime. He is my world. I’m so heartbroken that I couldn’t save his siblings and I think about them every single day, but I love my Jojo so much. He’s my best friend and I’m so thankful that I could save him and love him. My Maggie is almost identical to Jimmy. She'll be 4 years old this August. I adopted her in October, when she was around 2/3 months old, with fleas all over and infected eyes and dropy nose. She was malnurished by her mother. I gave her a warm bath that same night and the next day was vet day. She weigh 650gr and needed quite a few medicine. With a lot of love and care, she managed to grow healthy and strong. Your Jimmy made me go back 4 years in time. So glad he made it through and will be so happy with the new mom and dad :)

Heroes like these do break their own hearts, they do it so their foster babies never have their hearts broken again. If you adopted or saved a cat from the streets though, please don't sell that act short either. As much as we appreciate foster parents like these they are only one part of the story, it takes adopters to give the story a happily ever after.

It's true. they really do know when you're caring for them. I foster for a local cat charity, and I took a teeny hep kitten who wasn't expected to make it,but he pulled through much to the amazement of the vet, but then a few months later he developed FIP! Couldn't get a vet to treat him, they wanted to have him PTS, but I heard of an experimental unlicenced drug. Had to inject him at home, and it's horrible stuff, acidic, so it burned every time I injected him. He'd scream with pain and wet himself but after a cuddle and fuss he'd forgive me every time, and now he's completely recovered and the cutest love bug.

My cat had feline coronavirus (not COVID), and it's so common that vets don't even consider it a condition anymore because it's so widespread and there's nothing that can be done. Usually it goes away on its own, but about 10% of cats get FIP, which is almost always fatal. I have heard of these new drugs, and I'm sure they cost a fortune; congrats to you for being so proactive and saving your kitty's life. It's also good to tell your story in case someone else has a cat with FIP, they'll know there's a way to treat it.

Hanna is an angel! ❤ I wish more people were like her and not necessarily help just kittens, but others in need whether human, animal or plant, we all have the responsibility to protect our world. We all have a different path which means we can help this planet in sooo many ways and make a change for good. Some people save lives through writing, creating motivational content, practicing medicine, etc... The important thing here is know that as small as a change can be, it can create a huge impact to our communities and little by little make others open their hearts and want to participate in this long process. Let's be honest, if we can't do the same thing Hanna is doing with these babies for whatever reason, at least do not be cruel to animals, their lives are tough enough already.

“At this time, Jimmy felt better...” actually worried me terribly because of the “at this time” (I read “this” as emphasized) and “...”, and I thought “but” was coming as he still looked so fragile. I almost clicked out of the video I got so sad. Oof I’m so happy he’s okay. I know it’s a reality that some kittens pass, especially as my family used to foster tiny kittens, and though we never lost one, I knew it happened. Yet I was still so sad when I thought he had! When we fostered a litter of black and white kittens dumped in a box on the side of the road (frequent in my area; all of our cats are rescues, some of whom we found roadside out in the open or in boxes, which we learned to check as I live among farms and awful people do that way more than you realize...), I fell in love with one with six toes on each foot, but we already had animals and he got adopted. Happiness and sadness. I cried my eyes out admittedly because I begged for him, but I know he has had a great home now for a decade or so and I still remember my funny footed baby.

I had to cry since this reminded me so much of when I got an orphaned kitten. I was previously diagnosed with lupus, RA, connective tissue disorder, and fibromyalgia. I basically live in pain, but back then (before we got my meds in order) it really was torture. The pain was just too much to bear and I fell into a deep, deep depression, I mean, to the point I was planning to commit suicide. Then one day, a neighbor from down the street was going door to door offering kittens. She fed neighborhood cats and even though she had every one she could catch spayed/neutered, she still ended up with a ton of babies. I went over to her house and she said, "you gotta see the little one. I found her one day in my flower bed, all alone." I live in a rural area with coyotes and even a couple bears a bit higher up on the mountain, and neighborhood cats were going missing lately. I had recently lost a half deaf cat named Dexter (I couldn't bring him inside because I live with my grandparents and they have a Bengal that hates male cats and will seriously tear them apart) because of whatever it was. I assume that's what happened with the mother and the rest of the litter. When my neighbor brought the baby out and put her in my hands, I instantly fell in love. She was super fluffy, so it wasn't immediately noticeable, but as I held her, I could tell she was emaciated. After talking to the vet, we figured she was just under a month old. Along with being emaciated, she was covered in fleas (which made her anemic), had worms (which gave her terrible diarrhea), and conjunctivitis. The vet said she probably wouldn't make it, so I shouldn't get my hopes up. That made me angry. I made it my propose in life to save this sweet baby. I manually combed all the fleas off her, bottle fed her, and gave her the medicines she needed. Somehow, I managed to help her pull through. The vet was amazed when he saw her again. I saved that kitten and, honestly, she saved me too. Though my life is nothing but pain and I can't do much anymore, I've never felt such despair ever again, since I always have my sweet fluffy baby to help me get through each day. Her name is Ivy and she just turned 5 this past August. She's my sweet baby and I love her more than anything. I probably made a lot of mistakes trying to help her, but now she's happy, healthy, and super spoiled! I also adopted a 4 month old kitten from the shelter about a year ago, so now Ivy has a little sister named Shiva to play with.
