As others have stated in the comments bellow we are really interested in seeing you actually making a wand. You give great ideas and tips for conceptualizing the wand making process, but the reader can't do a whole lot with that info if they can't see the real process. Some of the viewers, myself included, are interested in getting into wand making but it can be a large investment. I know that I would want to see a start to finish wand to get more of a holistic idea if I want to pursue wand making.

Kivox has a couple videos where he shows some of the process, especially sanding and carving the basic shapes, but yeah I can't recall seeing a total beginning-to-end, concept-to-finish video (I haven't seen 'em all though.) I, myself, am very curious about the finishing process and adding finer details with wood burning and fine carving.

Kivox, you should look into getting a 3d printer, you could come up with some really cool wands adding unique pieces that were printed.

If you absolutely want an animal design you can take a promenant aspect of that animal but keep it simple enough that few people can notice. For example I like barn owls so I might make the handle look remotely like a barn owls wing with small notches where the markings are or if you like dolphins or whales etc. you could have the pommel look like the tail fin while having other details in the handle or blade. In short use the animal as inspiration without putting a head on the wand

I have the idea of putting shed skin from a Snake into a clear section in the wand handle to see the texture of the skin without making the handle into the head of a Snake.

So I was genuinely considering putting a dragon's head on the pommel of my wand, and honestly because of this comment I've reconsidered and decided to go with (the more complex) subte idea of having the wood seem scaled towards the bottom. Thanks for the insight and idea!

Love the content; keep it up! I'd like to see a basic wand tutorial using nothing but tools most people would have on hand (knives, sand paper, maybe a cheap dremel, etc.). Also reviewing wand concept sketches idea every so often like you do with completed wand photos would be nice. You could also do a video going more in depth on different kinds of woods, their weights/properties, and which are easier/harder to work with.

Love seeing those scraped and scratched working hands when you design the wands close up. I am a beginner wandmaker (apprentice if you want) and I make the wands out of branches, so the design process would be a lot different as i can only work form the dimensions that the wood give me, I know you do not usually do that kind of wandmaking, but do you have any tips on designing from given dimensions?
@KivoxEnder
@KivoxEnder 4 жыл бұрын
Definitely make your design flexible if you can do that then you won’t have any problems. I’ve made a couple of lines from branches and usually I try to find something that is somewhat close to the sheet that I want or I envision and work out from there

Hello, I have been making wands from found branches for many years. What I have found is if you take your time the wood will show you what it wants to be. Remember, it's already a wand, you job is to let it out.

Hey Kivox, would you ever consider making more shorter wands that can be used as hair sticks? Around 7" or so? Maybe even pairs of them? I have a beautiful padauk wand from your shop that I love wearing in my hair, but it's rather menacing at 12- 3/4" long (although that never stops me from wearing it, lol 😉) Also, I love the video! It's inspiring to hear a bit about your creative process :D

I actually like your KISS concept in designing! I often have a problem with overly detailing something and regretting the details later or foregoing the details and regretting not putting them in later all for the sake of themes. I will apply it to my designs for religious art. Thank you and more power!

When I design a wand, I only use one or two different colors on one wand, and I usually keep most busyness on the handle areas.

As a person who preaches the validity of the K.I.S.S. method ( specifically that form follows function) in regards to artificing, I respect your advice on following the natural flow of where the project takes you while not making it overly busy to the eyes. That said, it's my understanding as an artist that if the wand material wants an animal face ( or indicative animalistic characteristic aspect) on it, it'll get it one way or another. This is because wands choose their wielders, not the other way around. Secondly, if you are using blade making terms I would recommend referring to the handle as a hilt due to your definition of a handle including a pommel, grip section, ferrules and a guard.

I'm kind of thinking about this now. How do the wands in the Harry Potter world evolve in a wizards lifetime? Is there a 'pimp my wand' - community? I mean, 11 year old Tom Riddles wand probably didn't look like a the wand of a monster. Or if it did, it possibly traumatized him into being evil. But are there wand customization shops where you can get different handles and add-ons? Is it like a tattoo palour or does Ollivander do it? I have so many questions and I am definetly overthinking this.

for things that have strong symbolism like animal heads, it can in certain situations work, like Lucius Malfoy wand. what to me is important is the "why", why do you have a snake head on your wand ? well, they as a family very much fit the Slytherin stereotype, they have some dodgy things going on with the dark arts, etc... and so because this strong symbol that is a snake head as something that backs it up, it works. but if you made a wand for harry potter that had a Phoenix on it, it would just be cheesy. sure, is wand as a Phoenix core, and it's an important part of his story, but it's just not profound enough of a link and harry potter just doesn't represent the Phoenix enough.

Harry and Voldy’s wand designs 100% represent them. Harry’s has the bark/root design which is reminiscent of how he is in fact an uncut and unpolished diamond. He is kind of a mediocre wizard until he actually apply himself - you’ll find in the books he’s a total slacker. Voldemort’s character is all about death. Escaping it, passing it around with Killing Curses, obsessing over dark and death magic, taking his filthy Muggle father’s bones etc.

I just found your channel today, watched a few videos and have to say: You and your work are amazing! I just got into „wand making“ with chop sticks and hot glue 😅 I think they are okay for the beginning, but they just don't feel right. You know what I mean? I'm really looking forward for these wand-making videos. Super excited to see, how you work with the wood and how you color it. What about making 4 wands for the 4 houses of hogwarts? Like, without the animal design but maybe so, that they represent their house. Work a bit with colors or something else. I think that would be cool :) Greetings from germany!

Yet you say Voldemort and Harry’s wand doesn’t contrast with their personality when it really does and the reason why I’m saying this is that if you look at the wands of how they suit their appearance then you will understand that the designing contrast of the wands suits their facial appearance it is the same with most of the wands that the characters have suited their appearance that’s because they were made to design to suit their facial appearance Tbh u should Pay more attention to the movies and proper designs and characters
