The 304 bar stock is magnetic on the edges due to high plastic deformation which changes the internal structure of the steel (not austenitic any more) and makes it magnetic

Magnets don’t stick to the doors of my stainless steel fridge but it does stick to the sides

I always take a magnet to the store with me when shopping for appliances. If the magnet doesn't stick, I don't buy. I wish they'd make old-school enameled appliances like they do washers/driers. Imagine using your fridge as a whiteboard.

@@jaxbreweryIs your fridge door curved? Forcibly shaping stainless steel, like with a press, changes its atomic structure, making it ferromagnetic again. This is why stainless washers are magnetic (they're forcefully stamped), while bolts and nuts aren't (they're cut and rolled).

@@RondeLeeuwJust got a new refrigerator actually and it’s flat on all sides. All sides are magnetic on this one.

I bought a drinking cup on ebay and the item description says: it is stainless steel. I put a neodymium magnet to it and it does not pull at all. And I became suspicious... As far as I know magnets stick to stainless steel. So this cup must be some other material... And this video shows that some stainless steel are not magnetic! 😳 You learn something new every day.

Is this ferromagnetic (430) stainless steel always actively pull/push magnetic like a magnet itself or will it only like passively react (and maybe temporarily remember) the magnetic field it was exposed to?

i put some stainless clamps in my magnetic tray used for placing nuts and whatnot when your taking engines apart. so when i put all four in their they reacted slightly, they turned out, in unison, the heavier part of the clamp to the outside and was repelled by the lighter band to the center, and they wavered, as if their was something pushing them up, repelling them and they floated about a quartier inch above the magnetic below the steel bowl. now that was wierd. i had to do it a couple times, check if they were magnetized, but nope. if they were not stainless, i couldnt use them. was confused for a bit. but the effect of it was strange.

I have a question, i just bought a cross and they told me that it was made of (i don't know how you say it in english, but here in Argentina is the steel used in tools that are used in hospitals for surgery, i think it is called surgical steel) stainless steel, and when i came home i tested it with a magnet and the cross stick to the magnet, besides it is heavier than other pieces of steel that i have, so, what material could it be made of, cause i don't have idea why the magnet stick to the piece, i thought steel wasn't magnetic and in this video it is magnetic so what could it be.

'Surgical' steel often means it's a 420 type stainless steel, or something similar, which is ferromagnetic like normal steel.

I dont understand. I see 2 (304 stainless sttel) 1 pieces no magnet with the piece and the another pieces it is magnetic... So what is the mistery or conclusion?

Does Neodyn mag on lithium ion batteries cause sparks or damage the battery? I messing around with the idea doing some parallel charging on weak Li-on 1865 recharge batteries.

Like welded together? Neodymium magnets can be demagnetized by high temperatures...you might be able to weld or solder them together, but the magnet would be partially or fully demagnetized, depending on the temp.

@@KJMagnetics What if it was a weaker magnet and and the magnet and steel made a piece as small as 4 in lomg and 2 mm wide? Would that be possible? One half magnet the other half steel?

@@honeybear1762 The steel would "block" the magnetic field on the side of that side of the magnet, so you'd have one side that was strong, where the magnet is, and then the other side would be weak, where the steel is.

1:02 but that could not make any less sense....iron is magnetic....that's not a simple myth, it just makes sense. Wtf is going on here?! *sigh* I'm so confused, even after watching but....at least this makes it easier to identify scrap metals lol

It's called Austenitic stainless steel. The iron atoms are arranged in a weird cubic shape that renders the steel non-magnetic.

Damascus patterned will be magnetic if it's forged. 'Fake' Damascus, which is etched with a laser or acid, will be non-magnetic, unless it's heat-treated. Heat treatment makes non-magnetic steel magnetic again.
