In the Deco Bay of KLM Hangar 14 at Schiphol Oost, KLM Engineering & Maintenance paints our planes with electrostatic spraying equipment. With this painting technique the paint is 'attracted' by the 'earthed' (i.e. not electrostatically charged) airplane, with considerable attention to safety and the environment. I really love KLM's paint scheme, definitely one of the best in the world just for its cool simplicity and blueness. Hopefully they never change it! KLM-blue should be the national color of the Netherlands

Mainly for the airborne particles in that get suspended in the air during the repaint process. Same reason they say wear a face mask when you sand wood. I'm fairly certain wood is environmentally friendly. Also the bunnysuits are to help the workers stay cleaner and prevent contamination of the paint from hair, body oils and skin from getting into the paint next to the body of the a/c. Which could lead to corrosion or premature failure of the paint. :) Hope that helps.

Best paint was AmericanAirlines befor 2011. The aluminium look was great! And if you have asked a captain from AA, what kind of polish he uses for the great shine of his aircraft, he answers: "Speed only Sir!" :-)

Looking at the AA livery from pre 2011 up close you could definitely see the battle scars on them. Love the new livery with the flag on the tail.

Forget the advancement in paint , I am impressed with the drop down platforms . Painting off scaffolding is a pain . Assembly then move them disassembling.

@8justin88 It's a paste chemical that helps to clean off any left over bits of the old paint of. Extra paint means extra weight and extra fuel. Increasing costs. So they apply the yellow coat to cut down on extra paint and extra weight, in turn decreasing operating costs.

they removed the old paint that wasn't enviormentally friendly and applied the new lighter paint

Every 4 years a commercial airplane receives a new top coat and gel coat, one to prevent localized corrosion and two to keep it economical in the air, they remove the gel coat and T/C, inspect for cathodic disembodiment around design defects and joints, key the original intermediate coat and then re-apply the new system to the clients spec. TBF its not normally the system itself that is the main cause for re-application, its the possibility of dirt, oil, grease, chloride salts and forging contaminants that get impregnated in the coating system whilst in service. This can cause OH- (hydroxylene) to form on the substraight causing coating failure (AKA cathodic disbondment, resulting in delamination). This is why even tho the painting system looks okay to you and I on the clip, it still requires a new maintenance system to be applied. Hope this helps.

Everything is much improved since the 70s. For one all aircraft have TCAS (traffic collision/avoidance system) so he would see the plane on the little radar and know it was there - they turn it on when entering the runway

@sonnylatchstring is more when it comes to the 744 passenger version, as there is more plane to paint thanks to the longer hump. They already restrict your allowed checked in baggage, and charge you more for going over that limit, you have to think about the entire picture not just the paint. There are reasons behind it, it basically all boils down to money, how much can they save per flight.

No ,they use it also for passenger transport. But the 747 is in use because of it's space inside, this plane is bigger than any other airplane (exept the A380)

Less paint is a huge plus . What most people dont realize to paint something of this size and color scheme, takes 100 to 130 gallons of material, 900 to 1400 pounds of materials, which is why they chemically strip before refinishing.

but you lineup with TCAS on, and you cross runway with transponder on, so in the KLM incident you refer to, they would now both be able to see eachother.

as far as I know the paint can weigh 1-2 tonnes, so 15% could count up to 150-300kg. That for every flight can add up to a lot of extra fuel

How is it with the clearcoat? Does it now really help to remain at a certain gloss and not to fade as normal laquer would do? (op zijn nederlands: Uni lak heeft de neiging mat te worden en kleur te verliezen, is het nu merkbaar beter beschermd? Daarnaast heeft KLM nooit aan gedacht om een product zoals FLON4000 te gebruiken om frictie met de lucht te verminderen en daardoor nog lager energie verbruik te creeeren?)

TCAS only works if both transponders are on... You don't taxi with it on.

Does anyone know if passengers' baggages are transfered from a KLM-flight to a KLM-cityhopper flight? Or the opposite? In addition, does KLM-cityhopper has the same baggage policy as KLM?

@nightfox What is your point? 15% = 15% We are talking about reducing weight of the paint itself, not 15% reduction in total aircraft weight. They better reduce the amount of luggage people can take on board with 1 kilo or let them have a good crap like I suggested if you're concerned about CO2. And for your sake, yes, again I am talking about a passengers plane with 200 to 500 people in it.

They have the suits on to protect their clothes They paint it the same colour scheme because that's KLM's colour scheme The engines are covered actually look at them after the masking process.
