Hey Brad, this is actually something I do for my swim club. Most of my athletes struggle to break their PBs in the pool so I use this conditional style of training too. My favorite conditional exercise is the bare foot 5k on black asphalt in August. The hotter the asphalt the better. The only caveat I throw in is this, if an athlete complains about their feet, they have to run an extra kilometer. This builds great resilience in the pool. My athletes learn to not bitch about how tired they are, because they can’t feel the soles of their feet. Now that the pools are back open at the club, I have had 5 swimmers break their previous PB’s in the pool. I’m glad we both view training the same way! Sincerely, Coach

I never left. Sometimes all the Karen’s at the swim club get to me. Back in March Jonathan’s mom took me to court for breaking her windshield with my 5 championship rings. I lost the case and was suspended without pay until a month ago, but I wore my high school letterman’s jacket to court. It’s hard to watch informative training methods on KZfaq, like yours, which we both seem to be on the same page about, when I can’t pay for internet.

I can see how a pause might come in handy at the natural progression of a weightlifter. Maintaining thoracic extension throughout all of the pull. Bringing your overall strength up to speed, to better accomadate newfound squat and leg strength. Especially useful for the youngins.

I actually do what your recommended sometimes when I'm feeling weak that day, especially with squats. If 70% is feeling like a 90% that day I drop to 40-50% and do 8 working sets of 5 with 1 minute rest. I know I'm not getting any strength training that day so I might as well get some volume.

Thinking about old guys Klokov got me wondering. More and more authors seem to recognize the value of strength, not hypertrophy, but specifically strength training for longevity and optimal aging. But how do oly lifts fit in this, are there actually old people still strong and mobile enough to do oly lifts, would maintaining this capacity be a good reference for how you're aging, of is the abandonment of explosive exercises inevitable as time flies by?

Although it may be somewhat "mental" it is almost equally "physical" - SPECIAL EXERCISES(weakness correction) as well as ADAPTION TO STIMULUS (the body adapts to EVERY STIMULUS).

I feel like this doesn't make a lot of sense. Other than the first time you try a variation you will know what you can do. If you clean and jerk 100kg and can hang clean 90kg then once that's established you'll still be number orientated vs "just feeling it out".
@RohannvanRensburg
@RohannvanRensburg 2 жыл бұрын
But the likelihood is that you won't be so mentally tied to the number. You're creating variability which promotes further adaptation as well as skill acquisition. If your entire sport revolves around your snatch number then your pause snatch/hang snatch/snatch grip dead/ etc numbers won't be of nearly as much consequence and you're likely to gameify rather than stress about it.
