These knee arthritis stretches and exercises are simple to do and should provide some relief from knee arthritis pain. They are also great for keeping your knees nice and fit. Read Doctor Jo's full blog post about this at www.askdoctorjo...
The first stretch is for your calf muscles. Start off with your legs out in front of you. Keep the leg you want to stretch out in front of you. Take a stretch strap, dog leash, belt, or towel and wrap it around the ball of your foot. Relax your foot, and pull the strap towards you stretching your calf muscle. You should feel the stretch under your leg. Hold the stretch for 30 seconds, and do three of them.
The next stretch is for the hamstrings. Keep your leg that you want to stretch out in front of you. Try to keep your back straight and just bend at your hips. Keep your leg straight and pull your toes towards you to get an extra stretch. Hold this stretch for 30 seconds, and repeat three times.
The last stretch is for your quad muscles. This time you will lie on your stomach to stretch. Wrap the strap or dog leash around your ankle, and then lie on your stomach. Bring the strap up and around your shoulder so you are comfortable. Then pull the strap towards you bringing the lower leg towards your bottom. Hold this stretch for 30 seconds doing three of them.
Now we will move on to the exercises. The first exercise is going to be a quad set. Put your leg straight out in front of you again. You can use a towel roll underneath your knee as a target. Activate your quad muscle by squeezing it and pull your toes toward you at the same time. This will push your knee into the ground. Try to hold this for 5-10 seconds and do 10 of them.
Next you will do a short arc quad (SAQ). For this, you will use a foam roll or a rolled up beach towel. You want something big so you have a good bend in your knee. Prop your leg over the roll with your knee on the roll. Try to keep your knee on the roll the whole time, and then lift your foot in the air until your leg is straight. If you pull your toes towards you at the end, this will help activate all the muscles in the leg. Try not to go fast because then you are only using momentum. Go slow and controlled with your movements. Start of with 10 of these. If you get to 20-25 and it is easy, then you can add ankle weights.
For the next exercise, you will sit in a chair. This one is called a long arc quad (LAQ). This is similar to the SAQ where you want to go slow and controlled, and then bring your leg up straight out in front of you. Slowly come back down. Start of with 10 of these. If you get to 20-25 and it is easy, then you can add ankle weights.
Now you are going to stand up for the last exercises. For the hamstring exercise standing up, you want to keep the top part of your leg as straight as possible in line with your body. It might try to come forward if your muscles are tight, but try to keep it down. Slowly bring your foot back behind you, like you are trying to kick your bottom. Make sure you are going slow and controlled with these. Start of with 10 of these. If you get to 20-25 and it is easy, then you can add ankle weights.
The last one is for calf strengthening. With your feet about shoulder width apart, and holding onto something for balance if you need to, come up on your toes bringing your heels off the ground, and slowly come back down. If that becomes easy, you can do this one foot at a time. Start off with ten and work your way up to 20-25.

So sorry to hear Gwen. ❤. Me too since I was 12. Now I’m 62 and NEVER ate properly or exercised although my doctors told me over and over to. You don’t know me but I’m 62; 35 in my mind and 95 in my body. Please take it seriously now and make taking care of you 1,000 %, amd only you! You still have time to heal!

Excellent video. My mother was diagnosed with knee arthritis yesterday. I'm excited to share this exercises with her. She has been in a lot of pain. I'm hoping she can be seen by PT next week. While she waits to be see she can try this. Thank you

Her videos are the best and I spent a lot of time looking for the appropriate demonstrations/explanations. When I come back from physio or rehab appointments or even advice from the doctor I don't remember the exercises or I am not confident I am doing them correctly. It's all here in these videos. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED by this 69 year old woman.

You never want arthritis. After dislocating my hip at age 13 I had arthritis by age 16 in my hip. By age 38 my hip look like a 88 year old hip. That's when I had my total hip replacement at age 38. I am not looking forward to age 68!

Thank you my leg feels so much better i have lots of inflammation in it and i loss like 19 pounds but i got off my track and gain some back and i noticed i got knee and leg pain again so back on track no sugar no chips no caffeine no bread and ill keep exercising

I’ve had 2-meniscus tears - basketball and tennis. The first one was met with PT afterwards and I was able to resume playing basketball at my usual competitive level. The therapist literally tossed my crutches across the room and then stretched my knee without apology. Two years later the I tore the other one without PT. That left my legs slightly unbalanced. Your stretch will help fix that, I hope! 🏀🎾

Dr. Jo, I just saw my doctor today and she prescribed some exercises for me, similar to what you showed in this video for knee arthritis and I had some pain from doing them, so I stopped immediately. My knees have been feeling better with rest, so I don't want to rush into any exercised that might cause more pain and discomfort. I like the exercises you performed in this video because they seem very easy to do.

a cleaned out folgers. tin (the red plastic one) works well instead of roll under knee or ankle. i also find it has the handle grip slots on it so you can rest your foot into them.

we don’t know what's really wrong with my knee, i got a mri done on my knee and they saw nothing. but i am in marching band and a couple of times my knee has swelled up, doing this every day has made my knee feel better, but overworking it can cause it to act up again

Thanks for the exercises.. I started doing this. I got hip tightness in pregnancy and 10 months after delivery , this problem is continuing and I have a lot of pain at the hips when I sit for a long time and if I move suddenly . Does this goes away if I do the exercises 3 times a day? Thank you.

Thank you very much!! I got diagnosed with water on the knee and I am 35 years old. I was in massive pain and went to emerg at the hospital. The doctor there told me to KZfaq some exercises and I chose your video. After one day with three pinched ligaments and my knee swollen so much that you couldn’t see the knee cap, the pain definitely came down and I have released two out of the three pinched ligaments. I will suggest your videos to anyone I know. The next morning the swelling was down and the pain is 70% better. Thank you so much for my mobility back.

I have a question. Are these exercises helpful to reduce fluid in the knee cap? I have this problem and i've been trying to strengthen my muscles but nothing seems to work

I have communated fractured shaft femur bone nw my knee is painful. I took medi and get relif afterward again its pain. Ur exercise is benificial for me.. Tnq

Your videos have been a lot of help.My girlfriend is having straightening problems.We like the cans in bags idea,but she needed more weight.We put a dumbbell in a fanny pack,which gave us more weight flexability and comfort.THANKS.

So what do you do if your knees are so swollen you can’t get on the ground to exercise??? My range of motion is extremely decreased.

Dr. I love you and appreciate your efforts. Your videos really help me a lot. I am a 45 years old busy housewife. Have knee arthritis my hip joints are weak too. I suffered fb and cfs about 5 year ago. I learned to managed these. But i gained weight due to limits in mobility. I want to loose weight without any over exertion or injury. Please make some videos to help loose weight at home .

Hi! Doctor Jo! I'm suffering from knee and ankle arthritis since last one month. My doctor has given me stretching exercises. There is some kind of cranking noise I often hear coming from my knees and ankles while moving around. What is the reason behind? Is it serious? Doctor has advised me not to climb stairs. And he has given one medicine with a combination of minerals and vitamins. Need your advice.

I've been getting cortisone shots in both my knees. In time I have lost leg muscle strength. I don't want knee replacements. I really am hoping I can build the muscles back in my legs & easing the osteoarthritis as well. Am I too late?

As I said in your other video on stretching a meniscus tear I mentioned I had arthritis in my knee ...6 yrs ago. I started going to physical therapy about 8 weeks ago. For my knee pain. But it wasn't this bad. And that cat stretch on my belly pulling the foot into the gluteus maximus was one of my stretches. I can't do that now. If I try that it will hurt very bad

As a PKR patient who's been in PT for over four months 3-2 times a weeks these exercises give me hope of recovery without a 3rd surgery. I don't know this lady but she's great! Dr. Joe is there a topical... that will help with the pain?
