Knife Making - Japanese Tanto (from old file)

Another knife making video. Full build of a Japanese style tanto. This time I forged the blade. It was all new for me to make such knife with all the parts and the fact that you have to fit things perfectly so they can be assembled and disassembled without glue and rattling. It was a challenge but also so much fun. I really like to try something bigger in future.

I spend a lot of time in my shop working on blades, and when I'm not, I'm usually watching videos about bladesmithing. This is some fine work! The effort to show the making of all the fittings, saya, tsuba, and tsuka. Great job! I love the shinogi zukuri blade with the longer kissaki/boshi. It's beautifully done. I can't say enough good about this piece. You should take great pride in this work. Thank you for sharing your work and taking the extra time to film it for us.

Thank you , friend. Your comment really cheers me up. And in this exact moment I really needed some cheering up :) I watched and read a lot of materials about these blades and I wanted it to be close to the real examples. I also know that it's far from them. I hope that in future I'll have the chance to make more and improve myself more :)

This is the best modern-technique video I’ve seen for a tanto. Has all the fittings and everything, minus the menuki (handle ornament). Any modern bladesmith (including myself) ought to have respect for the time, effort and skill that went into this blade. Well done!

Dude I agree usually I find it a little obnoxious when watching people make anything like this, but this is the first time I watched this and appreciated the work put into it and allowing for the machines to do the hard and tedious work and the rest being done more traditionally!

Huge respects to you sir, I don't think I've seen a single video of the making of a tanto/wakizashi/katana that did everything as right as this, even down to the shitodome, this is truly fantastic. (Bar maybe the "samegawa" but I can't hold that against you as the real stuff is difficult to get a hold of) Bladesmith to bladesmith, hats off to you.

Thank you for the nice words my friend. There are videos of people making katanas/tantos/ wakizachis that are on a much higher level than mine. I even got alot of good information from them ("That works" channel and "Tetrahymena" ) but the majority of the videos on the topic are very far from tanto indeed. I also have much more to learn and I hope that soon I'll be able to start working on something like that again. cheers!

dude just because the hamon isn't especially neat, doesn't mean you didn't do an excellent job in forming it properly. I personally like the rougher look of it. It's a quite charming bit of untidiness that helps distinguish it from most of the examples you see, and i really think that adds to it.

For the ito wrapping, i recommend a vice. Itll give you a REALLY tight grip. I also recommend using skate laces instead of shoe laces, especially the thick kind. These both will give you such a tight grip that you wont even be able to move the wrapping at all. I even go the extra mile to lightly scorch my wrapping to give it a shiny and tightened look that also gives it a little bit of sweat resistance. Wonderful video!!!
@RustLegion
@RustLegion Жыл бұрын
Thank you for the tips , I replaced the shoe laces with proper ito wrap a few months after the video :) Yes I should make myself a special fixture for the handle so I can clamp it on my vice :) For my next tsuka project I will try to make my setup better. Cherrs
