Knife used - Kershaw Bel Air
Steel Type - Magnacut
Stones used
Gritomatic silicone carbide - 240 grit
Gritomatic silicone carbide - 1000 grit
Gritomatic silicone carbide - 2500 grit
Dlt Xl leather strop with 1 and 0.5 micron diamond
Bess “C” score avergaed on 7 cut test - 102 grams
This knife was generously loaned to me, by a viewer. Kershaw has always, in my opinion, had quality knives, at reasonable prices. This one seems to be no exception. So much so, I will likely purchase my own, soon enough.
The Bess test was a bit frustrating. I recorded all the tests, as I made them. I can not say, why the machine shows the discrepancies it does, other than to point the finger, at myself. Removing as many human errors as possible, would be the ideal way, to test sharpeness.
Pressure, speed, tautness, and even angle, can all skew the numbers. Until a new way comes along, this is what I have to demonstrate with. For those watching, and comparing, as I say in the video; do not base your judgement of sharpness, purely on the results provided. It does not give a clear vision, of the overall sharpness, an edge has.

Not sure why I find sharpening and sharpening vids so soothing. Or maybe I do. I tend to keep my finger forward/high to "hide" those tapered choils from smiling at me lol Doesn't always work though. Nicely done. 🤘🏼✌🏼

Following Knifegrinders Bess test procedures (a sharpy dot on the edge } to test the sharpness at a specific point on the edge will help reduce the spread of differences. You can also do repeated tests on various points. Mike at Edge on Up didn't seem to think test material tension is much of a qualifier; any thoughts. Speed of push thru might affect test results too. Nice video, thanks Jet

The tighter the thread, the lower the results. It’s why many guys try to load the tension with 100g weights. I use my Leatherman juice which is approx 120g. I used to do the dot thing myself. Not sure why i stopped. I still saw the numbers swing doing that. Perhaps that was why i quit?

Kershaw has made several nice knives lately. Their Deschutes Caper fixed blade is great. It's in D2 but is on the hard side of that steels heat treat.cheers ! -cam-

I agree. I’ll be getting one, i do believe. Although that back taper is jacked, what knife isn’t these days? 😁

I’m not a user of many fixed blades. I know the launch series looks amazing. Just need replacement springs that are stronger, but otherwise, i think they are fantastic.

Neat, how many strokes do you generally do, is it also dependent on the steel type? I’d say it would; I get my knife sharp enough for work, not shaving sharp but I’d like to do it once for fun!

I grind to a burr. Just depends on the stone, steel type, and if i am having to reprofile.

Nice video, nice edge! Seeing people struggle with the BESS tester is basically the only reason I didn’t pull the trigger on one yet. Every time I am almost convinced I need one, I stumble onto videos of people struggling to get them to work consistently.

Yes they can be finiky but much of it is probably (myself included) human error. So many variables can affect the numbers. If you could devise a way to cut the media, with even steady pressure, that would probably remove most of the issues. Unfortunately, i haven’t figured that out. Sure someone has a video floating around, sharing what they do. If ya ever come across I’d be happy to get the link 😁

@@JefRandom errors are not a problem, just increase the number of measurements. Just take 5-7 measurements. Calculate the average. Calculate the standard error. Give the result in the form: average +/- standard error. The true value will lie in this interval with 67% probability. The result of this knife is 103 +/- 13 grams.The relative error of measurement is 13%.

Cliff told me this as well. He tried to get me start taking no less than 20 measurements. Unfortunately as many knives as i sharpen, I’ll burn through the media thread, quickly. It isn’t super expensive, but that will eventually start to eat into my pocket. He was trying to find me a fishing line equivalent, before he passed. Never got me a solid answer on something reliable, that matched bess’ stuff.
@lars43771
@lars43771 4 ай бұрын
That would be not only costly but also very time consuming, especially when you sharpen a lot of knives indeed. Guess it’s just waiting for the next somewhat affordable step towards measuring sharpness for me.

@@Jef There is no point in using a thread from BESS. Why use it if it doesn't serve its primary function of comparing sharpness levels between different people? If you sharpen a knife and measure the sharpness, and then another person measures the sharpness on the same instrument, the results are likely to be different. As far as I can remember the thread from BESS is just 0.009 inch thick fluorocarbon fishing line. Buy fishing line of the same thickness and use that, it's much cheaper. Personally, I use capron thread, which is very cheap and I can take a lot of measurements in my tests.

How do you dress your stones in between lappings?

I either use a nagara stone, or the naniwa dressing stone. Nothing else done until i condition and flatten them with sic powder

I really want to get my hands on some magnacut. What’s your opinion of the steel?
@Jef
@Jef 3 ай бұрын
It’s fantastic. I havent tried to sharpen them on anything other than sic or diamond, but the steel itself, holds sharpness, for a long time. It is one of the few steels i can use at work, for a month, before needing to be sharpened.

15:49 strong glint along entire edge. Did you apply a microbevel or is that a burr?
@Jef
@Jef 4 ай бұрын
looks like one doesnt it? I had no burrs, and stropped it again after the video. I assume it is just the lighting, bc the bevel is convexed. you can tell the roundness by comparing the very shiny area near the apex, vs the heavy scratches near the main grind. i think* it is just the rounding effect against lights
@jdisdetermined
@jdisdetermined 4 ай бұрын
99% sure it's just a convex edge the way the light is reflecting. Too consistent to be burr and the transition is too smooth to be a microbevel. My bad, he already answered it lol..
