Sorry about the review repeats. Removing the first portion that I had recorded, I wasn't sure what I mentioned the first time around, that did not make it into my final thoughts. So things got repeated.

Always a quality video, I love watching/listening to you sharpen. After sharpening maxamet now and again, I'm always amazed at how much crazier of an edge an Aus8 or 8cr blade will take. It's user error of course, but I have never gotten a maxamet edge anywhere near as buttery or screamin sharp as those lower carbide steels, the burr is just too stubborn to keen up. Great edge, always happy to be able to watch your content.

I can't recall my bess numbers on maxamet, but I do know, I was able to get better edges, with SIC stones, than diamond. That includes the Venev resin stones, and triple b's cbn stones. Not sure why, but the sic just does a better job, for me. That said, I doubt it got the keeness aus8/8cr takes.

That's funny about people thinking heavy knives feel like a more quality knife. A guy at work wanted to get a first knife and really liked my pm2 but didn't like that it felt so light. I told him it's a perfect knife to change whatever you want and can make it heavier by adding copper or brass scales. He bought the pm2 and brass scales and liked them alot but after carrying it those g10 scales were back on the knife within 2 weeks. I told him that he wouldn't like carrying a brick in is pocket and thought I was crazy for carrying such light weight knives until he started carrying one then got it.

Right? Must be the mentality from owning those buck 110s 😁 those are bricks too

Good video mate. And yeah the micro cracking is a factor with naniwa they should issue a full refund to people if you ask me

I spoke with them directly and they flat out refuse to do anything with it. They always refer you back to the vender. You’d think with all the complaints, they’d address it.

Nice video Jeff. Haven't seen those stones in a while, I think you nuked all the videos where you used them from the channel minus one or two. Can't say I blame you after the issues you've had with em. The nagura is a 600 grit basically a chunk of a traditional soaking stone. The actual grit rated naguras naniwa sell are literally just small chunks of their super stones. They are smaller than that one. I'm a big fan of the super stones for razors, shears and for all sorts of polishing and finishing uses. Sometimes you get them naguras for as little as $2-$3 (compared to $10-$25) a pop if they have minor damages on em like smashed corner. Also I'm not above using them as mini stones for tiny blades from time to time too. Cheers.

Ive used em that way too (as tony mini stones). Yea i got tired of arguing about naniwa with fanboys so i removed most the videos i posted of them. They are still around just not visible.

Hey Jef, first off I hope ur better half is on the mend! I tore my patella in a mtn bike wipe out in 2004. I'll leave the Naniwa pro issue alone. I'm now I'm a shapton pro guy for everything except my kitchen knives were I use the Chosera's w/base I do love that feedback... W

Thanks! Shes getting better by the day. The patella is what holds your knee cap in place right? Was yours folded off to the wrong side or anything gross?

@@Jef the orthopaedic surgeon said it was 7/8ths goneso they cut it stretched it back & attached back to the cap. Painful yes long recovery yes but modern medicine amazing. LuckiLy at the time I had health care through my work!. The way this country can give 100's billions to wars that we shouldn't be a part of and not help working Americans get healthcare or get a college education without piles of dept. Let alone the est 50-100k homeless veterens in this country. The politicians, CEO's and wall street should be ashamed! There bailouts and tax cuts at the expense of the working folks. Now that's un American!

Wow! Sounds like a mess. She had her accident at work, so workmans comp is paying for everything. We do have separate insurances though. Her knee would have been taken care of either way. Although, we would have ended up paying a nice chunk for surgery. If memory serves, they only pay like 70-80% of that.

@@Jef The patella IS the knee cap. The patellar tendons are what’re attached to the top & bottom of it, and the groove at the bottom of the femur is what stabilizes it side to side.

Hey Jeff. Really enjoy your sharpening vids. Question for you if you don't mind. What grit/finish do you like to keep on you American Mutt? I seem to be catching coarser grit as I use mine. Though I'm aware that it's a mixed material stone, I'm guessing the materials are different grits. I lap mine on 120SIC. I stop when the 120SIC is about half worn down, so I guessing around 250-300 grit. What say you? Thanks Jeff!
@Jef
@Jef Жыл бұрын
Once it is flat, I usually lap mine with 46 grit, to achieve as coarse a texture as possible.

@@Jef Thanks Jef. You confirmed my suspicions. I'm using it to fine. I have some 36 and 64 SIC. I'll save it for coarser work. That's why I have the Artic Fox you twisted my arm into buying. lol
