When you're using hand dyed yarns, it's a good idea to have two balls of yarn going at once to avoid color pooling. In this video I demonstrate how I keep the work neat while alternating two balls of yarn.
The Knitter's Pride 16” circulars I use in the video can be found here:
www.yarn.com/products/knitter...
You can find more information about Knitter's Pride needles from these retailers:
Bryson Distributing: www.brysonknits.com/
Accessories Unlimited: www.accessoriesunlimitedinc.com/
Knitter's Pride Shop finder: knitterspride.com/find-store.asp
The scarf pattern I mention in the video can be found here:
verypink.com/2017/03/22/one-ro...
The hand-dye yarns I use in the video are both by Twisted Owl Fibers, more info here:

Thank you so much! I know this an old post but I’m struggling with my work -either of these: a) not joined, like if I drop and don’t pick up from underneath or b) not looking tight and tangled at least on the inside when I’m trying to “catch” the new yarn with the old (or worse, tight and tangled on the outside!). Now to try to solve the problem of the red pooling from being in the exact same spot on both yarns! So many nuances that I don’t think people understand when they say, “that’s a great sweater! now start on mine!” 😡🤬🤯🤯🤯😵‍💫😵‍💫😵💀

Hi Staci - I am wanting to make the Hitchiker scarf that uses 150g of yarn. The yarn I used only came in 100g hanks though, so I used up 50g of one for something else, and now have one 100g ball, and one 50g ball. Should I just split the 100g into two 50g balls? Thanks

This image makes it pretty clear - the colors in the yarn are contrasting, which really shows off how the colors pooled badly. "Badly" mainly because the two socks do not match! simplysockyarn.typepad.com/.a/6a00d83452e09e69e201310fe4aefa970c-pi

Do you alternate the same way if you are working short rows? I just knit a sweater with hand dyed yarn and the pattern called for some short rows after joining the sleeves to raise the back neck a little (bottom up raglan construction, knit body tube, knit sleeves, join then knit up to neck.). I alternated everywhere except the short rows. Looks ok but just wonder if I should have done it there too.
@verypinkknits
@verypinkknits 7 жыл бұрын
You can really only alternate yarn balls when you reach the end of the row or round, so the few (or many) short rows you work wouldn't alternate every two rows/rounds. If that was my project, I would still alternate two balls of yarn every time I reached the end of the row/round.

Can you do this with 3 or 4 balls of yarn? I’m making a sweater from one of your patterns, but it calls for 6 skeins of yarn at 110 yd/skein. I have 4 skeins of 200yd/skein and am wondering how I can alternate them all to make the colors in the sweater look consistent and nice. Do I just do two at a time until I run out and then start the other two? One of the balls is very colored/speckled, one has barely any, and two are in the middle, so I know I definitely need to alternate but I’m not sure how to get it looking evenly distributed!

Staci, thanks for this clear demonstration. I was wondering two things. (1) If you are using two new balls of yarn, do you knit both strand pulled from the inside or one strand from the inside and one from the outside? (2) If you are making two balls of yarn from one new one to accommodate this technique, do you wind one from the inside of the big ball and one from the outside, or do you wind them both from one source? Thanks! I learn something from every video.
@verypinkknits
@verypinkknits 7 жыл бұрын
If the yarn is dyed like the yarns I show here in this video, it shouldn't matter. If the yarn is dyed in long color segments with distinct color breaks - that is a bit different. That kind of yarn is meant to create large sections of the same color, so it is probably not necessary to use two balls at once (or choose a different yarn if you don't want the color segments to show).

@alark2213
@alark2213 7 жыл бұрын
Sherry Brandenburg it's to prevent color pooling in the project. Doing this keeps the colors randomly dispersed and you don't end up with ugly blobs of color.
@KitchMakes
@KitchMakes 7 жыл бұрын
Also, because of the nature of hand dying, sometimes two different skeins of the same colorway can be slightly different. The overall color(s) might be darker or lighter, etc. When changing to a new skein of yarn, you might run the risk of a drastic line across your work from the slight differences from one skein to the next. Most notable in a garment or large shawl knit in tonals or speckles.

Love your pod casts...I have a problem..I just knitted a hat and it is HUGE. (Quele domage) (how do you like my french?) (that's the extent of it). I need a pattern that makes sense for me for my daughter. I knit something called "the Gilmore girls hat" and it was a disaster!! I could fit two of me in there. (possible three). Jodi...help me out. I have a large head and usually have to purchase a man's hat for the size. I ask Jodi because she is a self proclaimed hat person. I think I used size 8 needles with a cupcake yarn in pink/purple/red. I must say I am not very good at this despite my willing nature. The hat looked very "homemade" and I was very disappointed. BUT, I will persevere. Thanks for letting me rant! Honey

Oh, Staci, I'm so grateful for this video! Thank you for doing this. I was originally planning on purchasing a variegated hand dyed yarn for a shawl project, but decided against it when the shop keeper at my LYS reminded me that I should be alternating the yarn. From your video, it's clear that the technique is simple enough, but I had never done that before and felt intimidated. Instead, I decided on a tonal version of Malabringo Rios and was relieved when the project turned out (www.ravelry.com/projects/SunnyScarletBlue/mitali-shawl). I do have one question. In doing this technique, what is your method for casting on? In other words, are you casting on with both yarns (long cast on technique) or are you casting on with one and then adding the other the same as you would with a new color in a stripe pattern? I'm just interested to know what you've found works the best. Thank you! :)

No need to cast-on with both yarns. Just CO normally, then add the second ball of yarn after the first two rounds/rows.
