Considering the career that Arturo Sandoval has had, which has included winning several Grammy Awards, performing at the Super Bowl, having his music featured in movies and television, and receiving a Presidential Medal of Freedom, you might think that he has run out of places to explore, new projects to create, or new people to perform for. This is far from the case.
Musicians:
Arturo Sandoval trumpet
John Belzaguy bass
Tiki Pasillas percussion
Dave Siegel keyboard
Kemuel Roig piano
Johnny Friday drums
Video:
Parker Miles Blohm
Audio:

a great example of how the trumpet can be used for subtle musical expression and not just pyrotechnics. Arturo can play ANYTHING, but this is a great example of pure musicianship. Wonderful.

Good god! That tone is like aural butter. I thought he was on flugelhorn, this man truly is an inspiration. Never mind the ripping high notes and amazing clean runs. His mastery of tone is unlike anything I’ve ever heard.
@bd1845
@bd1845 2 жыл бұрын
I agree 100% on this. As he demonstrates many times changing your instrument and mouthpiece will only change your tone very marginally as your core sound will always be that. He says he plays what he hears in his head and very few trumpeters have the ability to do that. Have a listen to the live version of Zane on KZfaq and shut your eyes you would think he was playing flugelhorn too.

That just may be the best version of Here's That Rainy Day I've ever heard! To be able to play a ballad like that...! His sound... ugh!! Not to mention the ability to hold back like that. His lines were gorgeous. I'm a sax player and I think I may have to transcribe that whole thing (ear, not notation). Hopefully I can do it even a remote amount of justice. Wow... That was entire master class right there.

I agree 1,000%! Definitely the best version ever. So much feeling, phrasing, breathing, and his sound is so velvety, it's pushing flugelhorn-ish. And yes - the holding back - that's some real expert timing there.

I've been honored to play a number of Sandoval pieces growing up, including one with him as a clinician. He just embodies jazz- he can go from playing incredible notes at virtuosic speeds and ranges in stuff like Night in Tunisia and then play this and just bring everyone back down to earth with his lovely understanding of ballads. Truly a one of a kind talent.

Great musicianship is not always about how much power you can summon, how many notes you can throw into a phrase, or how high those notes might be. Sometimes, great music happens with the lights turned way down low, a feathery-light touch lovingly caressing the nuanced flavor of an incredibly romantic offering from the Great American Songbook, like this one composed by the great Jimmy Van Heusen with equally haunting lyrics from the pen of the incomparable Johnny Burke. There is no question why it was Johnny Carson's favorite song, or a fixture on the Stan Kenton Orchestra book, or why a gigantic talent like Arturo Sandoval would seek to sink his prodigious chops into this truly evocative ballad.

he was at the UD Trumpet Day in Dayton, OH a few years ago. Asked attendees to come up and play something. He worked with each brave soul, listening, encouraging, coaching. Then took time with his friend Dr Ed Calle to explain what they were thinking and doing in specific jazz structures ... all while demonstrating it with the UD jazz band. It was awesome.

As many times as I've listened to Arturo in concerts and online, I can never get over the sound of his playing. Like many of the great players there is one thing we can all appreciate; his adaptability. When I was first introduced to Arturo Sandoval, I was researching him and Dizzy Gillespie playing Night in Tunisia and exactly how Dizzy made it. In his career, Arturo played it many times, each showing off his power, range, and technical prowess. But the smoother jazz pieces are where he really shines because a lot of people ridicule him for only being a "higher, faster, louder" player which I personally don't agree with. Every note he plays can send you into a mirage of a rainy day, and very few even in the jazz world can really do that. I absolutely love what he does, and he is a role model to younger trumpet players who are discovering who they want to sound like, or how they want to sound like. Please Mr. Sandoval, keep playing and continue to pull us into beautiful music and inspire us to make ourselves move forward in our own musical prowess!

The sounding of the trumpet...I like the title of the song, and SANDoval playing , like I also like his compositions , specially all he's done after he left Castro's Cuba...but I have always wondered who got that metaphora into the language (saving for a "rainy day") , since rain is needed for the crops to grow, and it has always been associated with abundance and good things since evermore ( remember Elijah?) and it is highly appreciated by farmers everywhere , including those in Europe where the English language is from?. The same goes for the fear of # 13 , and sayings like "smells fishy", by the way.Just wondering though...
