These are the final minutes of "Willing Victims", the 22nd episode (75th overall) of the fourth season that served as the fourth season finale of the hit 1979-93 CBS nighttime drama "Knots Landing", which was a spinoff of the wildly popular 1978-91 drama "Dallas". The episode aired on CBS on the night of Thursday, March 10, 1983.
Though not in this scene, this episode marks the departures and final appearances of original cast members James Houghton (Kenny Ward) and Kim Lankford (Ginger Ward). Lankford would reprise the role of Ginger in the 1997 reunion movie "Knots Landing: Back To The Cul-De-Sac"
In this clip, Gary Ewing (Ted Shackelford) is sitting in the county jail awaiting his trial for the murder of his friend and former neighbor Ciji Dunne (Lisa Hartman, whose popularity as Ciji forced the producers to bring her back as a new character, Cathy Geary). He is visited in jail by his former wife Valene Clements Ewing (Joan Van Ark), who rails at him for confessing to a crime he didn't commit. (The night that Ciji died, Gary had started drinking again and couldn't remember what happened). Val reminds Gary that she was a witness to all of his alcoholic rage blackouts and that while he could hurt himself, he could never hurt someone else.
Meanwhile back at the cul-de-sac, Lilimae Clements (Julie Harris), Val's mother, has received a visit from a private investigator looking for a dangerous felon named Tony Fenice, who has a record for assault. Karen Fairgate (Michele Lee) comes by to visit to bemoan the fact her daughter Diana (Claudia Lonow) has left Knots Landing to move to New York with her boyfriend Chip Roberts (Michael Sabatino).
Lilimae shows her a picture of Tony that the investigator left. Karen's eyes grows wide with shock and horror as she has just realized Chip is actually Tony Fenice. Alarmed, she bolts back to her house looking for Diana, but is too late when she sees all of her daughter's belongings gone. She sits and breaks down in tears, not knowing if her daughter is safe....or even alive.
The episode ends with Val sitting in quite contemplation at home thinking about Gary. The scene then dissolves to Gary's current wife Abby Cunningham Ewing (Donna Mills), also thinking about her husband at their beach house. And then, finally, Gary just sits alone in his jail cell, ful of self pity and guilt and grimly determined to pay for Ciji's murder.
