Knowing Storyline doesn't make you an instructional designer.
There's so much more to it than that.
I feel that way too many people have thrown around the idea of “just learning Storyline” to people transitioning into ID.
When it comes down to it, Storyline, Rise, Captivate, Vyond, etc., are all just authoring tools. Anyone can learn them with enough practice through extension courses, academies, and KZfaq videos.
The key is knowing why we use them and everything else associated with being an instructional designer beyond just actual course development.
You need to learn the theory and processes behind being an ID in order to excel in the role.
Things like andragogical principles, how to efficiently conduct needs analyses, manage projects, handle stakeholder management, work with subject matter experts, LMS management, ADDIE, SAM, graphic design, and a multitude of other things.
You’ll never learn every single thing you might need before getting your first job but there's so much you can learn to prepare yourself for this line of work.
It's also important to note that not every company uses Storyline either!
Instructional design is a much more complicated field than it looks from the surface for career changers and it's important to keep these things in mind.
