Had a small business that my brother owned before me. He passed away in 2010, that's when I took over the business. It was a seasonal business and I dug myself into a hole for 10 years before I finally decided to move on. The emotional connection made me hold out longer than I probably should have.

In business, I’ve found the hardest time to quit is when the venture has huge potential and you see small wins. Small win after small win, but it never really takes off. This is especially true if you are used to working hard for every gain in life. If something is right, it should be relatively easy. When my latest venture took off, it was stupid easy. Everything works. I sell every product. I don’t need to advertise. It rocked me how easy it was. It’s the same in relationships and everything else. When you are doing the right thing for you, it is easy and it works. You may have to work hard, but you won’t be banging your head in the wall and trying to figure out 50 workarounds. The gains come and they are substantial. Knowing the goal is the most important thing so you can measure progress.

Such a clear distinction between "giving up/ quitting" and withdrawing when it pays to. Brilliant! I also like the way Jocko describes this quit-vs-withdraw dilemma as a trap, which happens when one gets too emotional and need to detach.
@AuthorTLGray4 жыл бұрын
I started tearing up before I even listened to this podcast. I've been listening to Jocko enough now, I knew what he was going to say. I didn't want to hear it, but I know I needed to hear it. I never quit. I cling tightly to the idea and hope of success, but I needed to be reminded that's an emotional attachment. I have to detach from the situation so I can reassess and figure out another way toward success. It's just most often success in a different path than I WANTED. That's what I knew, but didn't want to hear. I have to do the hard part of making a strategic adjustment - not quit. It's easier to apply this in business, but when it comes to relationships, disengaging is painful. 27 times, huh? I think I'm nearing that point.

@@antoniop3080 I ran a mission in Cambodia back in May of 1970 (I was a team leader for MACV-SOG), I had a 7 man team and had to go in and retrieve the remains of two pilots who crashed after being shot down. My seven man team was up against over 350 enemy soldiers. They came up the Ho Chi Minh Trail in 6 truck loads, two armored cars and troops running behind them. I got past two hills with my team towards the F4 jet crash site before the enemy came through the bushes at us. We did all we could to keep the enemy at bay. I had no choice but to get my team out of there. I called in the first chopper to lift out 3 of my men. Then called in scrafing along both flanks as the next chopper came in, I was wounded by three pieces of shrapnel and my men were hit as well. As the chopper came in hot, it hit a tree and lost 2 feet off each end of the rotor. They dropped the ladders as we kept shooting at the enemy, we linked into the ladders as the chopper lifted off, Chopper was hit bad but we made it back to Vietnam, Dak To. I failed that mission, the only mission I ever failed out of 37 missions... But I never gave up... In 2002, I went back to Cambodia, I hired 6 Cambodian rangers to get me back to the site. We walked 100 miles each way, 10 days each way, We spent 3 days at the crash site looking for the remains before being pushed out by bandits, I brought back pieces of the jet for the family. They very much appreciated it. But no remains of the two pilots... I gave my info to DPAA (JRT) back then. In 2017, DPAA called me and asked me if I wanted to go back. I jumped on the idea. We spent 6 weeks at the crash site. Found pieces of the pilots gear and vests, etc. Still no remains. They went back again this year for 12 weeks, not sure what they found. The point is, I never gave up... It's not a failure unless I give up... I am still on top of the mission to bring those two pilots home... On a side note, in 2017, the Vietnamese were there looking for the remains of their men. I drew them a map on where to look. They said that they found 127 remains and still looking for over 100 still at the battle site... On the second hill where the battle took place there was a bunch of enemy hooches that were wiped out buy the jet passing through as it crashed... There is a lot more to the story but I won't take up all your time. John Stryker Meyer is putting out a book soon that will have the mission and a few others in it. Never give up... HooYah

I always felt off saying I quit college engineering. But really my progress had slowed enough that I wasn't going to to make it and my GPA had dropped low enough that the college might not allow me to continue if I made another mistake. This was my 3rd attempt at engineering. So I made a tactical and painful decision to suspend that dream possibly indefinitely. But it leaves the door open if I want to go back more prepared in the future. This little segment had definitely reassured me. I have been training hard and plan to have a buds contract before next fall and worried my failur at school might haunt me through buds and seal training as a quiter This has given me some peace of mind that it won't.

Brilliant Jocko ! Thank you so much , why, is it I used to say good mad or bad mad which is it ? That is the deeply rooted physiological and psychodynamic roots of our dysfunctional behaviour were written early ,they once served us , but now the ego in this groove knows no f..insight at all , so we end up falling apart , basket cases continually self sabotaging , this usually goes onto until we see the bigger picture. That is as the "man" pointed out so beautifully ----- selfishness doesn't work does it , ever ? But in the "real corporate governmentally augmented society we live , the mantra IS just do as your'e told or else , sanctions can be subtle ie continually bullying or obvious ie poor pay , exploitation , in human conditions all reinforced by the hypocritical behaviour of those in positions of some authority even in charge , I presume dissenters in places like China and Russia are still spirited away like Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn was or just shot as was my favourite modern dissident Anna Stepanovna Politkovskaya. We may never win the battle either sadly , but fighting right is what counts , looking out for our buddies that is other casualties in oppressed situations , spending some time with them to help them where appropriate ,not loosing our ability to empathize , detach and above all trying to find some sense of humour in this "sick" world eh ? But Yes let us soldier on .... GOD Bless you, you are such and inspiration to so many please keep it up ! The problem is people are so eager to write this long term label off the them right now. Just because your last endeavor ended in what you think is a win does not make winning easy from then on. People are constantly searching through this thing called life and build a whole identity out of the moments as they pass. You can quit a while and then go back to it and quit again and start back at it when ever you want. There is no need to label your whole self off of the you right now. Nobody is keeping score but you and it's not a game. Just because you label yourself as a winner does nothing for your future challenges. We don't know what we don't know. If you have to put what we really are into words, you would need to expand the vocabulary because the right words just do not exist. We are more than any of the things that we think we are. More than a win or loss ratio. More than our function or malfunction.

Its about math. What does winning gain? What does continuing cost? If the cost of continuing is greater than the gain of achievement it doesn't matter if you win because you still lose.Can you at least mitigate your losses? that depends on how much you've already spent. Assign each item a prime number make sure the numerical value matches the item, always use prime numbers or semi prime, not always but sometimes even numbers can result in a false positive which will never happen when you use primes. Then use the percent change equation and see what numbers you get, DECISION made.

But A costs 2 and B costs 3 so you get (5-2)/5 * 100 =60 be gives you 7 -3/7*100 = 57.1. On the surface B looks like the better option, 2 extra pts gain for only one extra point cost, But the math shows A is better about 3 pts.

@@Starday723y as a failing amateur boxer who recently decided to walk away from the sport, this is sooooo relevant to me now. I won 3 fights and I lost 5. I could still continue to chase an amateur title and try to fix my record, which I have in the past. But honestly I don't want to spend anymore of my time or money on boxing. Though me just dropping everything may seem weak. It literally doesn't make sense for me to continue fighting just because of sunk cost fallacy. I've lost all interest in the training, the dieting and the constant feeling of stress to perform. This game theory thing definitely applies to the situation, I recently decided to leave. To continue, though I'd still be involved and have the chance to get more wins and have people cheer for me (pathetic I know 🙄loool), I'd ultimately be unhappy because I don't enjoy the training and the dieting and most importantly it's a dangerous sport that does infact cause damage to your brain. No matter how good you are, you will get hit. You can't swim without getting wet. On the surface it seems that continuing will allow me to fix my record but on the other hand... why risk losing even more fights when I can just walk away now because the truth is I'm not gonna make money from the sport anyway, not as an amateur. Amateur boxing doesn't pay. I think this game theory definitely can apply here and I want to thank you for explaining it to me. Wow.
