This is one of the most important lessons in life, especially in our modern times where distractions and addictions are everywhere and if you don't understand it you can go so deep and so far into them, that you get completely lost.

I used to gamble in stock and shares in Grece before 20-25 years. Nowadays at my 44 I do not give a dump for the stock market. I was using technical analysis system for buy and sell decisions. The stop loss rule was the hardest decision I had to take and it took me time and cost (money and psycological) to apply this rule.

knowing the difference when you should persist and when to walk away is the difference between millionaire and broke wagie. sometimes you should keep going, sometimes you should go. it's not just cut cut cut as said here. writing down the plan of action helps before you're wise and experienced enough.

Summary: The speaker discusses the importance of knowing when to cut one's losses, drawing on personal experiences from the late 90s stock market and later professional pursuits. He highlights two biases that often lead to poor decision-making: the sunk cost fallacy and loss aversion bias. The sunk cost fallacy involves letting past efforts influence present decisions, while loss aversion bias makes individuals more sensitive to losses than gains. The speaker emphasizes that this skill is not only applicable to financial investments but also crucial in life decisions. Three main takeaways: Sunk Cost Fallacy: The speaker emphasizes the sunk cost fallacy, where individuals continue with a course of action because of the time and effort already invested, even when evidence suggests it's not the best choice. This bias can cloud judgment and lead to poor decision-making. Loss Aversion Bias: The speaker explains how people are more emotionally affected by losses than gains, often holding onto investments or decisions longer than they should. This bias can lead to significant consequences, as illustrated by examples from stock trading and personal relationships. Knowing When to Cut Your Losses in Life: The speaker extends the lesson beyond financial investments, urging the audience to recognize situations in life where cutting losses is essential. Using a personal example of prolonged pursuit of a professional goal, he highlights the importance of acknowledging when efforts are not yielding desired results and knowing when to let go for personal well-being.
