Kodak Duaflex II: Using a simple family camera from the 1960s with modern film

Joe reviews the Kodak Duaflex II with the Kodet Lens. It's a TLR style medium format 620 camera from the 1950s and 1960s. He talks about using the camera, re-spooling film to be usable and how he worked with this particular model.
Also note, all of the black and white photos are from my family archive. I do not know if they were taken on this particular camera, but they were made on a square medium format camera from the correct era. So if they weren't from this exact camera, that is a good representation of what they'd look like.

Such a great video! Same story as you, I inherited the same camera from my grandfather as well as a Canon A35F. I’m not big into photography outside of the iPhone and figured this was the perfect moment to start exploring! Thanks for this video, can’t wait to put this to work!! Not many in-depth videos on this camera out there 🙏🏾🙏🏾

I would never had thought one could make such nice photos with such a simple camera. Every time I have tried to actually use any Kodak camera to take pictures, it was always a fiasco somehow. Mine will remain shelf dwellers.

Thank you! They're so fun to use. I totally get it and like I said, I made a lot of mistakes. But then again, I really like imperfections in my personal work because it just feels so much more real (and constantly pushes me to be better). But, a good shelf queen is always awesome too.

I have one of these cameras from my dad via his father, so thank you so much for making this video. I've been wanting to use it and bring it back to life for my dad! Any tips + tricks about cleaning? Mine has some dust and dirt from years of sitting in a shoe box.

You're very welcome! As for cleaning, that's a good question. Honestly, I have no idea, but I'd just search for a general "how to clean my old film camera" video here. I'm sure someone has a good one.

Love the content! Just got my hands on a Kodak Six-20 folding camera. I’ll be testing it out soon!! I’ve seen some people use nail clippers to try the 120 spool to fit into 620 cameras, just another thing to try!
@JTobiason
@JTobiason 2 жыл бұрын
I've tried that a few times. I might have clipped it wrong but it was really hard to wind the film still. It worked, but rolling between frames was tough.

You don't need a power sander. Just lay a sheet of sandpaper on a hard flat surface and sand in circular motion.
@JTobiason
@JTobiason 2 жыл бұрын
Totally. But in the words of Tim Taylor, we need "more power! Argh argh argh"

When you respool, there will be a little wrinkle of film caused by going from the larger diameter 120 roll to the small diameter 620. Let that happen and when you get to the tape, peel it up and keep rolling. It will get stuck back down in the correct spot to release that tension and the film will lay flat again

Good to know. Thanks!!

Interesting. There were a few different models. I don't know the exact specs or when they were released. I saw photos of the one you're talking about online. Would be great to have that little bit of control, but I kinda love that this one doesn't. It's just a shutter and a winder.

Great nice video the take up 620 has to be send for develop can't. 620 spool can put back respool to 120 and send this one for develop
@JTobiason
@JTobiason 9 ай бұрын
I guess theoretically you could respool onto a 120, but that is risky. You're much more likely to mess something up or not reroll as tightly as you'd like. If you do that, I'd probably wrap the film in some sort of light proof container before sending to the lab.

Are you sure it is f8? I am amazed that Portraits 400 would work at all at that exposure in bright sun.
@JTobiason
@JTobiason Жыл бұрын
That's what I've seen online. Also, film (especially pro grade film like Portra 400) is so forgiving. You can overexpose by quite a bit before it's a problem.

The Kodet lens on your Duaflex is f/15 and 75mm. The more expensive Kodar lens is f/8 and 72mm.

Glad you had the experience of the Baby Boomer Era, those said Golden Day's, when things were less involved, the edges of life more clearly defined than they presently are. Have the Kodar focusable taking lens on my example, and find it's just a little better once you get used to tuning your skill set with this rudimentary faux-TLR. Sadly the point you make is the film made them was far more forgiving, and the color indexing for Kodachrome was ideal for this item, than a modern take with a more elder mechanism, that's likely worn, or suffers from lost spring tension as these camera's do with age. Enjoyed your views about how you now imagine how your forebears might have seen things, which I applaud for it's connections alone. Take care and be very well.
