Kodak's Duaflex camera were the prototypical toy camera. They were simple to use, fun, and could still take images worth sharing and enjoying. Great for taking photos of scenery and learning basic photographic principles, the Duaflex II and its limited functions take most of the worry and thought out of photography, leaving the photographer to focus on composition and artistic creation.

I used this camera with instax film! I just made my room a darkroom and took a sheet of film out of the pack and put it in the duaflex. Then after I took the photo I put it back in the film pack and ran it through the rollers in my Instax Mini 8! It looks amazing! I'll make a video on how to do this.

David - so here we are in 2021 your video is 5 years old and we are in the tail end of the Pandemic. I have a really fine Excellent++ example of this Duaflex II - Fixed Lens made in England version. Which was my inheritance/family memory of my Gran who was born in 1913 and died in 1999. It is still in it's case and I have several photographs taken by the camera probably around 1966/1967 of me as a baby and other family images. In turn I became a professional photographer and ended up collecting film cameras myself. My knowledge has grown over the years but i have not looked at my family keepsake like I do my own collection. So your video has been incredibly helpful. To think this camera was shooting at 1/30th of a Sec is mad - you are correct sunny days only - but it also demonstrates the latitude of film versus the modern day digital equivalent. Monetary value is low but family heirloom is value is rather special and indeed priceless. I may well try and run a 120 roll through it or even see if I can find an out of date roll. Real Lomo. BTW my heirloom is pristine in comparison to your KZfaq model. Thank you for this video it is so relevant even today. Regards Scott

Thank you David for putting this out there. Nice seeing the kind of images it can produce, shot a roll of Velvia, life happened, and now labs are no longer developing C6. Nothing important, though saving up for the C6 kit and do it at home (also have a 135 roll Dad shot in the 1980s that some reason didn't get developed). Hopefully keep selling the developer, love the look of Ektachrome (Fuji is pulling out of film so no point falling in love with a film that will soon be gone). Going to slightly disagree, if don't mind? This is a TLR, though not a full TLR with focusing ability which is connected to both the lenses. In the UK, they had a single lens point and shoot with a fake view lens, so strange. Also, not sure a 620 camera can be called a toy, 127 or 135 be less cost. My Great Aunt used hers as an everyday camera until some point ended up in the closet. Then she heard I was interested in photography, pulled it out, packed it on the long trip to see her sister, and gave it to me on arrival. Dad was a Physicist and used it to show me how lenses and cameras worked. Back then, 620 film was no longer sold and the easy days of the internet mentioned how to use 120 film, later, my High School teacher didn't either. Eventually, found out about sanding down the spools, though yes, re-winding be the best option.

Very nice to have this level of information on such an old camera. I found one at an antique store for $9 and the thing that really drew me to it was the viewfinder. Looks like I got a pretty early one, it just says “Kodak Duaflex Camera, Kodet Lens.” Never planned on using it but after seeing your video I think I’ll give it a “shot.” This thing is almost in mint condition and would probably take some beautiful photos. The only problem I’m having with it right now is that the mirror inside the viewfinder appears dirty/dusty. Is this worth trying to clean? I don’t want to damage it, and honestly I’m not even sure how it got so dirty inside. Thanks again for the video!
@DavidHancock
@DavidHancock 11 ай бұрын
Thank you! For the dirt, that' happens all the time. There are no dust seals in the body, so dirt can be easily trapped on the mirror. It's pretty simple to fix if you want to take the top apart. That said, the mirror needs careful cleaning because it's surface-coated silver and a lot of cleaning compounds will ruin it. I'd advise against anything other than a soft-bristle brush to clean it.

You can use 120 backing paper on a 620 spool the Film Photography Podcast has a excellent tutorial on how to do it on there youtube page.
@DavidHancock
@DavidHancock 7 жыл бұрын
Some 120 films work others do not. It depends on which company's backing paper is used. Despite there being standards for paper width, not all work on 620 spools. And if they don't work, it can break an older 620 camera or ruin the film.

Flash bulbs might not be made anymore, but you can easily get them in lots of eBay for about 25-50 cents each. I shoot mine with bulbs all the time. The deluxe version of the Duaflex with a focusing lens has a better lens that’s a lot sharper. Some of the cheaper variants do not have the double exposure prevention such as the example in this video. Most do.

I just inherited one of these and had no idea where to start... thank you! Would you recommend a 35mm to 620 spool adapter? I’m finding those all over the internet but not sure how I feel about it without hearing a review from someone!
@DavidHancock
@DavidHancock 3 жыл бұрын
You CAN use those but there are a few challenges. The first is that you need to cover the red windows. I recommend tin foil inside the camera covered in black tape or masking tape colored black with permanent marker. The second is that you won't be able to tell exactly how far to advance the film without overlapping frames. That's often a challenge. The last will be that you'll nee to unload it in the dark so you'll only be able to shoot one roll before you need to find a place you can safely open it, rewind the film, and re-load. There may also be focus issues as these weren't designed for 35mm.

Thank you! There are two shutter speeds, instant and bulb. Bulb is simple -- hold down the button and the shutter is open. Instant is around 1/45th of a second, more or less, but the exact timing is dependent on things like how good the condition of the shutter spring is.

I have film for this camera that doesn't have the numbers in the right place. How many times do you turn the wheel to get it to the next number? Please respond, thanks!
@DavidHancock
@DavidHancock 7 жыл бұрын
It depends on how far along on the roll you are. As the roll is used the spool's diameter grows with the width of the film and paper that are advanced. As the film is used, the number of turns decreases per frame. So there's no way I know of to know, for sure, how many turns are needed to advance the film if the numbers aren't in the red window.

Others have stated that the 120 backing paper is the same as 620. Pls confirm.
@DavidHancock
@DavidHancock 6 жыл бұрын
I think there is manufacturing variation. I've had some brands of 120 spool onto 620 spools with no issue while other brands of 120 paper have been too thick for the 620 spools. So I would say there is no blanket rule about 120 to 620 paper but suspect it has to do with how the manufacturer sets the width on their backing paper cutting machine.

I believe it's all re-spooled 120 on old 620 spools, however. But yes, it is possible to buy re-spooled 620 at places like B&H.

David Hancock So I take the roll out and send it to them and they develop it and then they send it back to me?!

Yup! And if you want scans they can do that, too.

Usually, yes. That 620 is, I think, respooled. I forget the name of the guy who respools 120 onto 620, and also respools other stocks onto 127 and 828, but they're not factory-spooled. But yes, that's a quick and easy way to get some 620 film.

You do *not* need 620 backing paper. 120 film and backing are identical dimensions; only the spool (and sometimes the printing) differs. Unfortunately, a clipped 120 spool will only work in some 620 cameras; many with spring loaded film carriers like the Duaflex family won't accept the extra length of the 120 (about 1 to 1.5 mm longer due to thicker flanges). For those you must respool -- but you can do so with the original 120 paper, no need to change the paper as well.

I hear that and it doesn't consistently jive with my experience. There may be some slight variation in backing papers because some do not work in 620 and some do, and that may be by maker, but my memory is a bit fuzzy as it's been a long time since I shot 620.

@@DavidHancock I've respooled with .EDU Ultra and Kodak and never had a problem with the 120 backing, but I've got only a couple cameras that need respooling; the ones I shoot more frequently work with just trimming the supply spool.

@@DavidHancock I'd be curious about what way 120 paper sometimes doesn't fit in a 620 spool or camera. The specified dimensions are the same, as far as I know, and companies like Famous Format who sell respooled film obviously don't have a problem (but they're not using some of the obscure brands; it's generally Kodak, Ilford, and Fuji).
