Going into our 3rd summer with the DIY Modern Koi Pond and it's time for a deep cleaning. The first fall I was smart and covered the pond with a net to keep the leaves out, but it presented other problems with leave blowing the patio that still forced leaves in. Last year I decided not to install the net and see how I faired....the amount of leaves that went in was insane. I've scooped the bottom many times and there seems to be an endless amount of leaves. I was having considerable trouble keeping the ammonia levels down and knew I needed to take action to fully clean out the bottom of the pond.
Another problem that has added to the poor quality is the number of fish - it was OVERSTOCKED! The goldfish had bred last year and with the new additions, we had over 30 Goldfish and 9 Koi (not full grown) in a 2,000 gallon pond. Having 9 full size Koi will one day be more than is recommended for the size of the pond. So I'll be looking for new homes for the goldfish.
The process wasn't very painful and the slowest part was draining out the water. The project took about 4 hours of actually working time and a few more waiting for the pond to empty. It was totally worth it.
What I Used:
Wayne Waterbug Submersible Pump: amzn.to/2UwgbFJ
Ryobi Electric Pressure Washer: amzn.to/2GxZo02
19" Pool Skimmer Net: amzn.to/2VcLVEd
ActiveAQUA 4 Outlet Air Pump: amzn.to/2XAVOsy
Rubbermaid 100 gallon stock tanks: amzn.to/2ZtlLME

If you bought a big Bakki shower filter it would go with the modern look of the pond. They are expensive though. You can build your shower setup, multiple actually, out of containers and then make a nice modern wooden box/frame/fence around the edge. Would look really nice along the wall of your house below the windows. Hopefully that makes sense.

I like your pond, it helped me to build my pond. 😊 And it is a good example why you never should have gravel or stones in a pond with fishes. All the sh*t and mud is piling up between the gravel. Impossible to clean up then.
@hooktherapy

Agreed! Stones in the bottom would have made it quite a bit harder. Definitely would’ve wanted a pond vac for that. I just went and watched videos of your pond. Looks great!

We moved into a house with a fountain similar to the koi pond, where would I find my supplies for pumping out the water? We need to drain and give it a good cleaning as well and may need a new pump.

It’s been cool following your pond. This would have been a great opportunity to get a look at each koi, see how much they’ve grown since you put them in.

It would have been except that I was racing the clock to get everything done so that I wouldn’t leave them overnight in the small stock tank. Definitely seeing the growth and two of them changed colors since I bought them. One went completely white and another lost most of its orange and is mostly white with black.

Im pretty sure that the algae you washed away was a huge part of what is keeping your water clean... The sludge at the bottom and the debri can go but always keep that algae with in reason. The good bacteria is never "in the water". The bacteria that is keeping the nitrogen cycle in check is in the sand, filter media, algea , substrate, and all surfaces. The plants and algea take up the nitrates, the last part of the nitrogen cycle.
@hooktherapy
@hooktherapy 5 жыл бұрын
You can’t see clearly with the water out, but we did leave algae on the deep end. The hair algae was pretty long, so I wanted to remove it from the top of the pond. I didn’t clean the filter or bioballs and I dose it with beneficial bacteria tablets (with UV off for 48 hours).
@Flatlandmike
@Flatlandmike 5 жыл бұрын
You can add many things to help your ammonia issues. You need source of bacteria holding apparatus post filter pre pond to house more aerobic and anaerobic bacteria. One type I have seen is called a baki river; which is simply some kind of box the water comes in runs throw some bio media ( can be cheap like lava rock; other purpose built media is better ) and drains out into pond. You take your out take from filter into the baki river like system and that drains into pond and your nitrogen cycle would be in much better shape.

Is there a type of filter that can go at the bottom of the pond to ensure cleaning and more movement of water?
@hooktherapy
@hooktherapy 5 жыл бұрын
Yes. Some people put bottom drains in. What I really should have installed is a skimmer. That would help keep the leaves from sinking in the first place. WHat I'm doing now is using a couple really large air stones to help "lift" items from the bottom to be filtered. I'll also be putting my net over the pond this fall before the leaves drop.

I heavily aerate it now to keep it up in the water and filtering out. Less likely to cause the problem that bottom drains can cause.

I find that my fish are happier with some slime and sediment like leaves etc at the bottom. I like to think of a natural pond somewhat..no one cleans the bottom of a healthy pond habitat right?

I have some larger air stones now to help lift any dirt or sludge to keep it from settling and run it through my filter. Also more flow through my filter as it only works at its listed rates if using the 1 1/4” tube.

I reckon that needs a clean like that every year at minimum with the amount of leaves and detritus that you had built up.
@hooktherapy

Especially if I don’t out a net on before the leaves fall. We have a lot of huge trees. The year before I was able to get them out without a full drain because not many had made it in.

Re using pond water is totally unnecessary. The bacteria is NOT in the water column. But if it makes u feel better...........
@hooktherapy
@hooktherapy 5 жыл бұрын
Correct. That is why I didn’t rinse my filter and my water is well water and didn’t have chlorine in it to kill the bacteria in the bioballs or filter sponges. It was more about the initial shock of the re-entry being a 100% water change vs 50%. Also why I introduced them with the little amount of water. Then the rest gradually changed any chemical differences as it filled.
