I’ve been studying Koine for 8 months and would like to get away from Erasmian pronunciation. Would you recommend Kantor’s reconstructed or Zachariou’s historical pronunciation? Thank you!

If you're studying Koine Greek for linguistic or historical purposes, you might prefer Kantor's approach. If you're interested in the musical or performance aspects of the language, Zachariou's reconstruction could be more suitable.

One thing that separates Koine from Modern Greek is this: The authors of The Gospels THOUGHT in Aramaic and WROTE In Greek, with their Greek coming off rather awkwardly with a Semitic influence in grammar (e.g. Ο Άνθρωπος ο καλός, from a phrase like האש הטוב in Hebrew, for instance).

The NT was written by a number of different authors each with his own style. Luke writes in a literary and eloquent style. The introductions to his Gospel and Acts are almost classical in style. No doubt, Greek was his mother tongue, unlike the other writers who learnt Greek as a second language. Nevertheless, Hebraisms are found in his gospel and Acts because of the nature of the subject matter. Similarly, the style of Greek used in the Epistle to the Hebrews is highly literary with a sophisticated vocabulary. For these reasons, some have speculated that Luke was the author of Hebrews. In contrast to Luke and the author of Hebrews, John and Mark write using a restricted vocabulary and short simple sentences with lots of “καί”s / “and”s. The “καί”s / “and”s are equivalent to the waw or vav conjunctive commonly used in the Hebrew OT.

Except John he was literally a philosopher or something like that when he wrote that gospel cause he used a lot of helenisms

Thanks for this great content! I would like to ask a question. If someone intents to learn both Modern and Koine Greek, does the pronounciation much matter? To concentrate on modern pronounciation might be more efficient then? Or does the pronounciation transport so much more information? Would be great if you share your thoughts about it. Thanks in advance.

Hello and thank you for your comment! Yes, pronunciation does matter, especially if you want to communicate effectively with native speakers or understand spoken Greek. But for the koine Greek the Greeks use the pronunciation of modern Greek to pronounce it. So, in my opinion it is better if you learn the modern Greek pronunciation.

Hello professor, I studied greek (modern greek) last year and I reached some level and I tried to learned ancient greek because I'm already have some knowledge with modern greek. The hardest thing to learn about ancient greek is its have many dialects variation like attic, ionic, doric and many other. Each dialect have its own features, for example, in ancient greek, Phileo means I love in most of greek dialects but in aeolic dialects verb conjugation is very different it becomes Philemi. Ancient greek have extremely complex verbal system and nominal declensions.Believe it or not, I learn ancient greek first declension(alpha declension) and it took one month and 13 day to remember one word. 😂😂😂😂

What would suggest for a beginner who wants to read the Bible in Greek? Would modern or ancient be better? I feel like learning I am a real language in modern. Thanks.

Technically, and ironically, the Koine Greek of the Hellenistic and Roman periods WAS the δημοτική of it's time, while the more florid literary Attic was like the καθαρεύουσα of it's day, the only difference being that the latter was an artificial puristic form, as you know, and the former the more "High" Koine of its day.

Για σού!
