What is Korean Age? Why do some Koreans seem "older?"
Korean Age Explained by a Native Korean. Here to answer all your questions about Korean Age and why people suddenly get older when they go to Korea.
Note from Mar. 15, 2023: Turns out I actually spent two years as a 16-year-old as well LOL. I guess there's something with me and square numbers
extra notes i guess:
International Age is 만 나이 (man nai) in Korean. Here, 만 (man) means "to fill up." It's a good description of International Age because people have to "fill up" an entire year (until it's their birthday again) to gain another year.
Year Age is 연 나이 (yeon nai) in Korean. There doesn't seem to be a proper translation of this online, so I just directly translated it into English.
some sources (almost all in korean):
Korean Age: namu.wiki/w/세는나이
Year Age: namu.wiki/w/연%20나이
International Age: namu.wiki/w/만%20나이
Youth Protection Act: elaw.klri.re.kr/eng_service/l...
Korean Legal Drinking Age: ko.wikipedia.org/wiki/음주_연령
The Meaning of "19+": m.blog.naver.com/daliboni/221...
Fast Birthdays: namu.wiki/w/빠른%20생일
(i was gonna talk about fast birthdays because it's also related to age, but i figured it would be sort of irrelevant to the whole video, so i didn't end up talking about it. if i did, this would've been the source)

this guy is extremely underrated fr, i love his videos. i'm new to the channel as of right now and your korean videos have helped me so much, i've searched for so long for videos that can keep my impatient and easily distracted brain in touch with the lesson and boom, you did just that. tysm for helping me understand hangul and korean age

I would love to hear you explain honorifics and using the different suffix endings. Or maybe a video that is a follow up to your one on learning Hangul, kind of the next things you would need to know about the language after learning how to read it. I feel like the way you explain things is clear, amusing, and helpful.

in sweden if someone asks how old you are you oftentimes just answer with the year ur born so if someone would ask me i would say ”jag är 05a/i am 05er” we never say 2005 etc its either that ur 17/18 or 05er/05a

3 key systems of Korean age 1. Korean age only cares about your birth year, not your birthday(We Koreans do celebrate your birthday but it has nothing to do with your age). You turn 1 year older every Jan 1st. 2. You just count every year that you have experienced. Even if you only lived 1 day of a year, it counts. (you're born in Dec 31th and the next day, you experienced 2 years so you are 2 years old) 3. Following to the system #2, your korean age : [(Current Year) - (Your birth Year) + 1] (The result would be (your international age + 1) or (your international age + 2) depending on whether your birthday has passed this year or not.) In public situations such as press announcements or in legally important places such as hospitals and courts, we use actual international age which you use. Korean age system is only used in everyday situations and in relationships between people. This makes the system more confusing to foreigners. As a Korean, I feel sorry for such weird system you may feel difficult to adapt to in Korea. Recently several acts have been passed to change from Korean age to international age, and young people are gradually adapting. But as Korean age has been used in daily life for a very long time(hundreds of years ago), it will not be completely established among people anytime soon. In conclusion : When a Korean asks your age, just say which year you were born. Then he will calculate how old you are in Korean years and how old you are in international years himself.

6:26 in the french speaking part of Belgium youngers people sometimes introduced their age by their year of birth instead of their age (we are a Western country so we use the western method for age). It's always said in an informal setting

@@OllehRebelz how does school work tho? If your 2 when your not really 2 in America then would you be 30 when you graduate or ?

@@Ricecakezs they usually graduate high school at 18-19 in kr age. most south koreans enter their schools like the following… elementary school: ages 8 to 13-14 in kr age (6-7 to 12 in intl age) middle school: ages 14 to 16-17 in kr age (12-13 to 15 in intl age) high school: ages 17 to 19-20 in kr age (15-16 to 18 in intl age) university: ages 20+ in kr age (18-19+ in intl age). so, the age when they enter their university or college is 20 in kr age, or 18 to 19 in intl age. fun fact: most male students in kr have their studying at university be delayed for 2-3 years, due to having to serve their military duty. so, it's normal that there be 2-3 year age differences among female & male students at the universities in kr. hope this helped!
