Competed in Japan with a dude who'd smoke everyone with this throw. F**king legend.

I love this variation allows you to be a little sloppy with the upper body and use the greater momentum generated in the otoshi to execute the throw

I do bjj, I usually spar with heavier guys and I find this the most effective to take anyone down if executed properly. If not it’s back take and goodbye sadly enough

Try throwing from more of an angle, quicker and much less susceptible to a back take. Just need to change the direction of the kuzushi during the set up.

can some one tell me the difference between this drop tai otoshi and drop seoi nage beside the fact of the initial position of tori compared to uke? And is this kind of tai otoshi a bit "dangerous", as in the case your opponent lands on your straight-out leg in the knee joint when you go for the drop tai otoshi -_- ?

I don't understand your second question. With most aggressive throws there's some risk involved, it's a full contact sport. You would not do drop seoi nage while your opponent is standing right foot forward like that...he would have to lead uke into the seoi or square up more. Also the drop with drop seoi you want to fall in between the opponent's legs, unlike with Tai-O. Keep in mind they are both hand techniques and need the same principles to be effective, which would be proper setup, pulling and rotation at the end of the throw.

k11401 buitienthinh the difference is seoi is using the hip and small of back as the fulcrum, along with the shoulder being trapped. Tia Otoshi is a perfect example of a hand technique. Everything is being generated by the hands. The outstretched blocking foot or leg is only doing maybe 25% of the throw. But notice the hip does not come into play.

yes, thats correct. the cross step in tai otoshi helps, but most of the work is in the hands. in seoi otoshi is kind of similar, though. now, tai otoshi is a more outside drop, and has more rotation. seoi otoshi is more on a straight arch. tai otoshi also starts at the side, throwing uke in front of tori. seoi otoshi is performed under uke, or even further back, to him right over tori, with a slight twist to avoid head driving. Also, de desestabilization in seoi otoshi is made by driving the trapped arm, while tai otoshi comes mostly from the lapel hold, with toris forearm controlling ukes armpit. Those are my two cents. im pretty sure there mus be more differences, but im just an orange belt who is trying to figure out things.

k11401 buitienthinh Wheres your knee going to go? Through the mats? Surely this is the safest Tai Otoshi if uki falls on your knee? Uke will h7t the floor before your knee can hyperextend.
