South Korea has proven itself to be one of the few consistently dominating forces in the Olympic Sport of Judo. With epic athletes in recent history such as Jeon Ki-Young (전기영), Lee Won-Hee (이원희), Wang Ki-Chun (왕기춘), and Kim Jae-Bum (김재범) dominating their divisions on both Olympic and World stages, South Korea shows they step on the mat to take it all.
How are they able to do it so consistently? Without question, one of the most contributing factors is judo is found in the Korean school system. This video shows how Korea's coordinated effort starting when their athletes are young, puts players on the podium.

Fantastic. When I was a tad in Tokyo an old man who specialized in Tai Otoshi said it required 250,000 repetitions (Uchikomi) each side to really get the feel of a throw. He had a post in the ground with rubber extensions where he practiced endless repetitions and boy could that old man throw with Tai Otoshi in every direction even when I moved backwards.

My city only have 1 Judo School and when I was there it was only 4 students and 2 instructors. And it was free also, they even gave me Judogi. Miss old days...

Paul Daluz They do about 30-40 minutes of newaza and maybe about an hour of standing.

+Red Dragon Diaries every session? Do they follow that model? Btw, trained at my BJJ academy today, our instructor was going over Uchi Mata and its variants and transitions. Nagewaza is still relevant in BJJ. :-)

I wish everyone could see what you just wrote. Today, people forget about the hardships of Korea in very recent history. My mother is North Korean and knows all too well what you mentioned as she defected in the midst of the Korean War. Thank you.

I studied Judo in Japan and the workouts are very similar, but some Sensei's will have you doing all kinds of strength training and stretches which will help you to warm up properly and prevent injuries.Americans in general, can not seem to endure the harsh training due to slight differences in physiology. I am 6'3" and while I was 14 in High school in Japan. Kodokan style. They also had Tall Japanese as well which made it all that important. I later used my Judo and Aikido in law enforcement and it helps prevent injuries. Most Americans styles fail at grappling as do MMA fights.That was my strongest quality, which is why I was a very successful heavyweight wrestler in Roman Greko style in high school. (1968-1970)

Yes definitely. It's a different approach here than back home. Randori for example is not all out trying to stiff arm or kill each other. I puts the emphasis on the technique.

We have judo in our school. I live in Hawai'i, in PCH we have judo and our highschool in one of the best on this island imo. I think every school should have a sport like judo :).

High School in Korea last a lot longer (days) than in America. I don't think its for the entire year but I know there's a few months where school last from 8am to 10pm.

I believe BJJ is a derivative of Kodokan judo, and judo is from traditional ju-jitsu. At the end of the day it doesn't really matter because today they are very different stylistically and competitively different.

seoultee형님, have you heard of a phrase call 헝그리정신(hungry spirit)? being korean myself, i had a father from who was born during the korean war. and when he was growing up, hunger was biggest struggle he had to suffer. i'm sure same goes for many other during that time. so comes along this phrase hungry spirit. metaphor is that, you're hungry for success and that's why we are who we are and made something out nothing and became the world's success story.

actually, brazilian jiu jitsu came from judo, which came from traditional jiu jitsu.

Maeda was indeed a Kodokan student, however he never called his teachings Judo, instead he called Jiu Jitsu. So he probably had some background in traditional japanese jiu jitsu. Otherwise, he wouldn't call his martial art Jiu-Jitsu, he would call Judo.

it is because in the early days the name Judo did not exist. Even the founder of judo (Kano) called his art Kano Jujutsu. He only coined the name Judo until much later.

They're similar terms based on "ju" or gentleness from chinese characters I believe. Also "yu" in yudo here in Korea is based off the same character meaning gentleness.

Kano sensei did learn koryu jujutsu (Tenjin Shin'yō-ryū which was itself a combination of two older schools: the Yōshin-ryū and Shin no Shindō-ryūfirst) before creating his own style "Kano jujutsu". Only later he started calling it judo. He did put in Sumo and wrestling techniques.

My sensei is killing us lol he's using all Japanese techniques and rules. Like if we finish before him it's 1000 push ups ( my friend had to do it) lol but he said that in 1 and a half weeks I can jump to yellow :)

Not really, the Blue Gi was brought in to help differentiate between the contestants for the crowd/refs/TV audience, it's been a contentious decision ever since.

Maybe the school got a bulk deal on black belts and that's all they have in available. Go to 1:50 on the video, on the left of the screen in the background, see the girl in white doing left side soinage. She's wearing a black belt but she's no dan grade.

actually both, judo and bjj, have evolved from japanese jiu jitsu. judo is jp. jiu jitsu without dangerous techniques whereas bjj is a better developed and modified version of the japanese original. peace

well, we in Russia trained 6 days a week 3 hours a day, and nobody was black belt until 15-16 years of age

Pavel Lytaev it depends on your country or school really. In Singapore, belt promotions are handled by the Singapore judo association, you need to execute techniques and perform randori in front of officials to advance in belts. I think 2 -3 years is a possible time to get black belt if you train diligently everyday

Actually both spawned from traditional jiu jitsu. BJJ didn't come from Judo or vice versa. When Japan got Westernized, there were experts who left the country and went to other parts of the world like Brazil, France etc. Then Judo evolved from jiu jitsu as a national sport when they decided to take out nasty things like breaking bones and choking people out to make it more viable as a competition.
