Why Disqus.. why don't you work? I guess I'll have to post this here. I'm from Sweden, and we honestly get pretty much no sunlight during all of winter... not kidding, we live too far North to have at a fair amount of sun... where I live I am among the lucky ones who will get about 4h of sun at the darkest day, but way north they don't see the sun for weeks. So, we celebrate the sun. Our midsummer is about celebrating the longest day of sun, which of course means where I live we get 2h of complete darkness, and up north the sun never goes down. So naturally, with extreme light and dark times of the year people here loves summer and hates the dark dreary winter (which, I should add are so boring because nothing grows as well, it's TOO cold, meaning we don't even get to see greenery apart from a few thousand pinetrees). This of course causes us to be sun-crazy. If you can, you go south and get a tan in winter. In summer, you stay outdoors in shorts and tanktops (despite the fact that most people think we're ridiculous because compared to other nations it's not always that warm). So, about cancer... well... we do get that as well. But from what i can tell, it's about 3000 people a year, which doesn't sound like much, but it is apparently a huge part among of our cancer patients. Still, because we get so much sun most people do use sunblock and since everyone here are mainly Arian-white you stay wary about it. ome don't, but personally, I find that to be idiotic and most of my friends put on sunblock if they're outdoors for several hours as burns do hurt. Me, I am born Korea, and I do have to say the oddness of being born Korean is apparently to have good skin. Not kidding, I barely do anything and people who have touched me (which I always find odd and awkward so please don't unless I know you REALLY well), tell me so. I even had a saleswoman rub her hands over my arms because she felt my skin was so soft... weirdest experience in my life. And hopefully soon, Disqus will work again because I miss posting ridiculously long posts... it's been malfunctioning for weeks... I can't figure out why?

AiMerodi You guys amaze me at times because up here we get less sun than you, but people seem less crazy about tanning. We are crazy for the sun though, something you can tell whenever spring arrives and every town explodes with people being outdoors.

Well.. I don't really think that's the case.. A lot of my friends, who are Korean of course, don't care at all about looking poor or rich. We just think bright skin looks pretty. Koreans are obssessed with being pretty and handsome. That's all.

And the reason why this is opposite in the United States is because people liked to appear tan because that classified them as being from a higher class. Paleness meant that you were stuck in a factory all day for long hours so you couldn't afford to enjoy time out in the sun. This was heavily perceived during the industrial revolution era .

Actually, the idea is the same to most Asian countries. It's more for status rather than health. Although they think it's for health reason, the basic premise for the majority would be the status. On the other hand, it's the opposite for US and European countries basically for the same underlying premise: status symbol.

Honestly, at this point in time I highly doubt it's a conscious effort to not look like a poor manual laborer. More so it's a trend that dates back to when that was a priority. Nowadays the trend has continued and instead of people not wanting to look like the tan laborers, they want to look like the pale idols they see on TV and in magazines.

I live in America. And my skin is very pale. My nickname is white lady. Or ghost. I was lightly tan when I was little but it faded. I only burn in the sun and collect freckles. So I just avoid it. XD

I was really tan when I was a kid too but probably because I went outside all the time lol now if I have to go outside in the sun for a while I always make sure I wear sunblock if I don't I feel anxiety lolll! Sometimes the sun gives me a small rash so I guess I'm kind of allergic to it too lol.

Thats the same for people in England! But the only difference is that here we don't get much sun so most just go on sun beds, or get a spray tan. I am pale myself, like very pale, when i go to Asia they love my skin. But I just use self tan to get a tan as its better for my skin.

I never wore shorts in high school because it seemed like I couldn't get through the front doors without someone talking about being blinded or even just a simple, "Wow...you're really...white." Why yes, I am caucasian, aren't I? Perhaps paler than everyone else and less likely to get skin cancer... But it just became such a burden to show my skin that I ended up wearing jeans through 100 degree weather to stave off both skin damage, freckles, and rude comments. What sucks even more was that I was confident about my pale skin, but then people made a scene about how I should 'go out and get a tan' and I suddenly had an unexpected insecurity on my hands. Go America!

You're correct, but that's for all countries, even in Europe with its little sun :P If you look at paintings, you'll see that the girls are deathly white- this is on purpose. There was a period where upper class women would intentionally consume poison so that they would be pale.

Back when most people in Europe worked outdoors - as manual laborers and such, pale-skinned women were considered delicate and beautiful. That's also why you see all those old European paintings with very pale-skinned women - that continued up until the 1920s, when Coco Chanel was caught having a tan by the paparazzi. Afterwards, tanned skin was associated with being glamourous and wealthy (and hence desirable and beautiful), since the rich people could afford to play around outside a lot - unlike the poor, who had considerably less spare-time (and worked inside all day) and couldn't afford to go on expensive vacations to more sunny countries. Or so I've heard. It's really all about the upper class and what they can afford.

Skin whitening in most cosmetics don't lighten beyond what your skin color is naturally without a tan. A lot of the products contain substances that inhibit melanin (what gives skin its pigment) production in skin, but with those products you'll never achieve a lighter skin-tone than what you had when you were a baby. In the states, the whitening products are marketed to treat uneven skin tone, hyper-pigmentation, or skin brightening. The active ingredients in those products are usually the same as the ones in Asia marketed as "whitening" which are all melanin inhibitors. There are other products (illegal) that can pretty much stop melanin production completely and you can achieve a permanent whitening. Those usually contain mercury and other toxic ingredients that can permanently damage your skin.

In India we have so many skin whitening creams, facewashes and what not. It doesn't make you white, but it does even your skin tone and makes it glow.

Oh, I know. I'm a Canadian born Vietnamese. I have family members still living in Vietnam that have literally bleach their skin to become "white". But then again it's a different connotation depending on where you live. Whitening in the Korean context like Simon and Martina have described, is brightening and skin tone evening. While South East Asians interpret whitening as literal whitening. I agree with your statement on Asians not wanting to look Caucasian. Some do, but most don't. (TRUTH) The standard of beauty among Asians has always been Oriental. Chinese beauty was the standard for forever up until the recent Hallyu boom and since then, it has shifted to Korea.

It's the same within a lot of African based cultures too, (like Afro-Latinos). People with lighter skin will say "Oh I really need a tan," but darker skinned people will stay out of the sun SPECIFICALLY to avoid getting darker. We only need ~15-20minutes of sunlight per day for proper vitamin D synthesis which is required for healthy bone development and maintenance. Staying out in the sun for excessive amounts of time with inadequate exposure is dangerous in terms of skin cancer risk and wrinkle formation.

I think what most people can agree on is natural skin in general is lovely. If a person is naturally tan, they begin to look sickly if they avoid the sun too much trying to get lighter. If a person is naturally pale, they look strange with a tan - even a natural one can look awkward on these people when it's done to the point where it's deliberate and not due to a natural and healthy amount of sun exposure.

At my old gym (in New Hampshire) we had tanning beds for those with gym memberships. Also, the local YMCA had tanning beds. I found this particularly strange because the tanning culture in NH is comparatively small when compared to a place like California, for example.

Ah yeah, a lot of gyms have them too around here. And if it's not IN the gym, is usually within walking distance. I'm always surprised that people in California use tanning beds. I mean, It's late may and the highest temperature I see for this week is 65F. So it makes sense since it's cold and not always sunny here. But Cali so warm and full of sunshine year round. Why don't they just go outside?

Oh man! I have super pasty legs. My body does not accept tanning. I go from white to pink to burnt and peeling. So I just embraced my freakishly pale skin as if I am part vampire. Makes sense. Also, you can always wear lightly tanned thin stockings or even a funky pattern under your shorts. It's VERY trendy in Korea! :D ps-> Simon tans perfectly. When I first met him I thought he was Spanish because he was so tanned from playing basketball all the time. I was SHOCKED to find out he was Polish! Hahaha!

My mom always yells at me about being in the sun, but I'm a gardener so...and I could careless if I tan. My father is really dark and my mom is really pale. I get pretty tan on my arms, but can burn on my face lol. It is weird but as long as your skin is healthy that should be number one.

I'm so happy that i found out about korean skincare because they have so many amazing skincare products and the BB creams are not too dark for me. A lot of it is our beauty standards in Korea. My sister loves to tan as well but she's a lot more "north american" if you will, while my other siblings (including myself) would rather have paler skin. It's all beauty standard, every country has their own standard of beauty.

(i like garlics tought :P) Its serious, I get severe sunburns standing out under the sun light 15 minutes at 11 am likeable to normal spanish people get sunbathing 3 hours without suncream at 1pm-4pm in the beach on summer... and of course I barely tan, its so painful I hate it with legitimate causes. Trust me, your average korean has a fairest skin than an average spanish. And average Italian, average french and likeable to average german or english. I never fond makeup for me. The fairest tone was too dark for me but I buy now cosmetics from korean web sites when i discovered they make the perfect cosmetics for me. I ended up following korean trends, they fit me better (once i wanted to be tanned and get white bleached hair, but its impossible for me XD) and now I use your country´s cosmetics brands due to its sun protection added effects. If you want a suncream wich allows you get a specific tan (you can choose: gold tanning, brown tanning, honey tanning, chocolate tanning... a lot of colours for your tan lol, like hair tints. Just saying, avoid "orange" or orange-likeable tanning... 2 years ago were banned or something related to cancericenous chemicals on them ) try buying cosmetics from spain or france (france got all the spanish cometics brands lately -w-, I would recomend you better france... hope no spanish people read this :P ). None of them fit for me if you ask they made me "tomato-rouge" XD and are better and cheap. Never try to but french cosmetics from korean or chinnese web sites, they lie!! (about the prices... the french cosmetics are not that expensive!!)

I'm 25 and I get mistaken for a high schooler too sometimes a middle schooler. Yes we do age well. Thank god. We get wrinkles but wayyyyyyy later in our oldies. Black don't crack. I love my skin.

I'm african american and I had really BAD acne when I was in middle school. It's gone now but people mistake me for being older for the way I look and my voice.

the reason is because the color of the skin. Their pigment is like a shield (hi-yah lol). The sun can damage your skin and face. When it comes to dark skin people (not only African Americans) they have this invisible skin shield that protect them from the UV rays. The lighter you skin, the easier way you can get skin cancer and UV damage.

Look for a moisturizer with SPF as well, it really helps. If people are like asking why you're putting that on you can just say your skin is dry as the desert lmao. Also you could try to 'reverse' the damage from the sun by using retinol products. Be careful however, only use it at night and you *have* to use sunscreen if you used it (or else it's useless to use retinol plus your skin is sensitive). But yeah, don't worry about people laughing or whatever. Jokes' on them in a few years :')

Actually don't rely on sunscreen from makeup and moisturiser they aren't that high in spf or just isn't enough for your face. Use a chemical based sunscreen depending on your skin type for good protection also chemical based sunscreen have anti aging properties too. Then there us physical sunscreen for swimming and all but they don't have anti aging properties.
