Long time ago, in the 90’s when I was studying in Toronto Canada, one night while I was ridding the subway, half asleep, I hear people speaking Greek. I open my eyes I look around but the only people close to me were two middle aged very Asian looking guys. I pay attention and indeed it was them speaking Greek and nit just any Greek but with really heavy Thessalonian accent. I stared at them and they noticed me. I apologized for my intrusion and I asked them how come they spoke Greek. They cracked out laughing!!! They explained to me that they were war orphans and when the Greeks left Korea one of them took them along. They grew up in Greece, they were infants at the time so they never learned Korean nor had Korean names, grew up in Salonika and when their family moved to Canada they came along. They did not even know if they were real brothers even (no DNA test at that time) … Great guys. We talked for some time and I am so happy I met them…

It means that when an honourable man dies it is a matter of the whole humanity. No matter how far he is from his home. And this monument thousands of miles away from greece proves that they died for an honourable cause.

Hannah, bravo to you for honoring the Greeks who served in Korea during the war. One of my uncles was a part of the Incheon Landing in Sept 1950. A second cousin also served elsewhere in Korea. I was blessed with the opportunity to have lived and worked in Korea 2007-2013. Thank you for honoring our Greek warriors. The Greek contribution is especially notable as the country was mired in its own civil war, 1946-49.

The phrase written on the memorial is a truly great phrase I love from Thucydides. We have the same here in Greece and it translates to "the whole earth is the sepulchre of great men" and it signifies that men that fell bravely aren't simply remembered from the monuments built where they fought but most importantly their bravery lives in the hearts of everyone that has heard of their sacrifice.

Consider: Greece fought in WWII 1940-44 with famine; immediately after a civil war 1945-49 and still enough stamina to help out another country.

Do you know what the sign says in ancient greek on the monument?.. it says "Every land is the grave of glorious men" and it means that the death of glorious people has a universal dimension.... it is a passage from the Pericles epitaph speech... This is the part of his speech....Every place (land) is a tomb of glorious men, and their names are not only preserved in inscriptions in their own country, but their memory is preserved in foreign countries, more in the memory and hearts of men than in written monuments and tombs

When I was living in Athens in 1970's, my family became friends with a well known family whose husband and dad was a supreme Commander of the Hellenic Forces there. American soldiers and officers spoke very highly of the Hellene Soldiers and Officers!

Since the Greeks had just won their own war against the communists, it's not surprising that they took so little time to decide to come to South Korea's aid when faced with the same threat.

Here are some historical information regarding the last battle fought by the Greeks in outpost Harry, a e-book regarding the Korean war and the story of the Greek commander there and some KZfaq videos regarding the Greek Contingent in Korea (with English subtitles) that you might find interesting. Battle for Outpost HARRY The enemy forces employed against Outpost HARRY during the period 10-18 June were tabulated by Intelligence Sections to be substantially as shown in the following table: 10-11 June A reinforced CCF regiment (Approx. 3,600 CCF) 11-12 June A CCF regiment (approx. 2,850 CCF) 12-13 June A reinforced CCF regiment 13-14 June An estimated 100 CCF 14-15 June An estimated 120 CCF 15-16 June Negative 16-17 June Negative 17-18 June A CCF regiment (approx. 3,000 CCF). During this period the entire 74th CCF Division was utilized against this position and at the end of the engagement was considered combat ineffective. Enemy rounds fired in support of their attack during the period 10-18 June amounted to 88,810 rounds over 81 mm size: friendly mortar and artillery units in conjunction with friendly tank fires were 368185 rounds over 81mm size." Since the outpost was defended each night by only a single company of American or Greek soldiers, the Chinese had anticipated an easy capture. C., 10 March 1955 GENERAL ORDERS 18 DISTINGUISHED UNIT CITATION Company P Greek Expeditionary Forces Battalion (Second Award) is cited for extraordinary heroism and outstanding performance of duty in action against an armed enemy in the vicinity of Surang-Ni, Korea during the period 17 June to 18 June 1953. Assigned the defense of a vital outpost position (Harry), the company encountered a major enemy assault on the evening of June 17. After an intense concentration of enemy mortar and artillery fire, the hostile forces, this had taken up an attack position on the northeast and northwest side of the outpost, moved rapidly through their own and friendly artillery fire to gain a foothold on the northern slope of the position. Refusing to withdraw, Company P closed in and met the attackers in a furious hand to hand struggle in which many of the enemy were driven off. The aggressors regrouped, quickly attacked a second time, and again gained the friendly trenches. Immediately, the Greek Forces launched a series of counterattacks, simultaneously dispatching a diversionary force to the east of the outpost which successfully channeled the enemy thrusts. As a Greek, thank you for honoring the Greek Expeditionary Force of Korea. The Greek Expedionary Force of Korea and the momument are important milestones for the relations between Greece and south Korea, for the bond betweeen Koreans and Greeks. We should improove the relations between Greeks and Koreans even more. Greeks wish that in the future all Koreans will be able to prosper in democracy and peace. If someone will threaten the freedom and the democracy of Korea, then many Greeks will be more than happy to come again to fight for Korea. It was an honor for Greeks to fight beside the valiant Korean soldiers for freedom ,prosperity and democracy. The Greek Expedition force (the "Spartan" battailon) consisted of 2,000 men, but they were pound for pound some the best soldiers of the UN coalition. They were extremely experienced in warfare and tactics and they counted as many thousands more in battle. The Greek battailon consisted of officiers who were veterans of 10 years of bloody warfare (greek-italian war, greek german war, German occupation, Greek civil war) . In the Korean War, often the Greek expedition force fought against many times larger communistic forces in brutal and bloody night battles like Outpost Harry etc. The Americans regarded the Greek battailon as some of the best soldiers of the world and as the best bayonet soldiers in the world. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ibGWhpeXmr-Xo6c.html Lets see some information about the Greek Expediotanry Corps and about the background of Greece in 1950s. Greece had went through three wars in 1950s. The greek-italian war, the facscist italian regime attacked Greece in 1940. It was a bloody war , but the greek army was victorious and pushed the Italian fascists back. This was the first Allies victory in the ww2 against the Axis . Then, Nazi Germany was forced to intervene 1941 to help Italy. The Nazi german army of 1941 was arguably the best army of the world. Greece could not do much against the german army , as the Germans had tanks, airplanes (the Greek army of 1941 did not have tanks and planes ) and also most Greeks fought against the Italian army, when the Germans invaded from the other side of the border. Nevertheless, even the Germans had many casualties in the greek fortifications line and in the greek island Crete the German paratroopers were almost annihilated. The greek island Crete is also the first instance of the ww2 , where civilians fought against the Axis. Greek civilians of Crete played an important part on the battle of Crete . Now Greece was from 1941 until 1945 under Axis occupation. But Greeks did not stop to fight. The Greek Resistance against the Nazis and Axis Occupation was one of the largest resistance movements of Europe . The greek mountains were under the controll of the Greek guerillas and the Germans had many casualties in the Greek occupation. When the Axis were defeated in 1945, sadly Greece did not have peace yet. From 1945-1949 Greece had a civil war with the Communists (similar to Korea). The greek civil war was one of the first cold war conflicts. Greeks had fought before against fascism and nazism tyranny an now thy fought against communistic tyranny. And freedom won, the Greek army defeated the communists. After 10 years of war and with a war ravaged Greece, many Greek soldiers volunteeered ( they were volunteers) to fight in Korea for the freedom , the prosperity and the democracy of the Korean people . Of course the UN coalition paid a lot for experienced volunteers, but most Greek volunteers had also the motivation to liberate Korea from communistic tyranny, as Greeks knew very well the horror of communism. The Greek expedition force played also an important humanitarian role in Korea. South Korea never forgot the veterans who fought in the Korean war. Now , in the covid crisis I was informed that South Korea sent covid masks to all the Greek veterans . I suppose South Korea did the same to all the now old veterans all over around the world .

I remember when my late grandfather telling me stories about a place called skots hills (there they had a lot of casualties) when he fought to Korea and being so proud of him. I am glad that he went all this way to help the Korean people. Lots of love from Greece.

Thank you for the honour to our greek soldiers. I noticed that you didn't know we participated in the Korean war so, i will inform you some of what i know. These are by interviews from greek soldiers that came, these exist in KZfaq. Many Greek soldiers came as volunteer but, many of the brave ones were pushed to join by their own commander. These that came had already fought in wars here and especially our civil war (greek national army vs greek communists army) so, it was projected to them that, they will go and help Koreans from the communists that attempt to take over them (greek newspapers also wrote how greeks are winning the communism in Korea and help). So these soldiers had an inner extra passion for engaging sot to help you. Greeks were placed at the first line of war and accompanied the US "X corps" which was the US special forces of that time. (Luckily, the UN had placed the Turkish army in Busan so that was very lucky 😆. If they were placed besides Greeks, there would be a Greek Turkish war because our soldiers had fought when Turkish raped, killed and made a genocide to greeks. after this genocide, Turkey as a nation was created. So, there would be a big war if we met each other then😆). Anyways.. The Greeks were the ones that were send to take over an important hill (mostly Greeks were send to take over the hills and these exist on records, you can find that. Which they took over. If you ask anyone that went army, he will tell you that it is the most important issue to take over a hill because you will have the upper hand and the observation of everything around it) because Americans couldn't take it for 4 months. Greeks managed to do that in short time and mentain it. Sadly, we had many casualties because the US air force bombarded an area were our troops were.. their excuse was that they made a mistake. Our troops had small Korean boys living in their tents because, some korean fathers went and offered their daughters for little money or else their family would die and many other soldiers took advantage of that and the girls ...the greek troops asked these fathers to bring them their boys so, they had them living in their tents so that the boy would have a safe place to eat and sleep plus, they made them go for errands (bring them cigarettes etc) so for the boys to gain money and give to the father so that, the father wouldn't have to offer his daughter. (These are said in an interview of the platoon surviving commander in KZfaq). Greeks have an adoration to daughters, have suffered as well a lot (what your ancestors have experienced by the Japanese, Greeks have experienced by the ottomans>Turkish, as well) and we always thought that the boy should protect the family and sisters and so boys were cared more for that in the greek family.. (This exists in many families until today). The Greek army contribution is described by some american marines that were in Korea and you can find also in KZfaq (write greeks in korean war and you will find) and they also say that, whenever the chinese army heard that on a particular side there were the greeks, they avoided that side because they would have great casualties and also would lose. (The hill that Americans tried to take over had about 100 casualties of american soldiers and about 400 wounded. When they called the greeks, we took over the hill and had 15 casualties and about 30 wounded). The Greek army had at least 13 aggressive battles in different areas then. Most battles were fought by around 1000 greeks. Later they had send more but it was mostly for defence but also, (sadly) so to have a recognition in their resumes that they had participated in the korean war (there is an interview of a brave soldier that was from the first ones that came and he states that at the end, Greece send them an inexperienced lieutenant that had no idea about war etc ...that was a political decision so to make him seem like a hero..sad to see). About 200 Greeks died in Korea but most of them died in the mistaken bombardment of the US forces. If you like, i can attach the links of greek soldiers that came there and stated all the above. This monument had something written in ancient greek language (it is written above from were you have placed the flowers) and it says : The tomb of glorious people is at any part of the earth. 영광스러운 사람들의 무덤은 지구 어느 곳에 나 있습니다. I have come to Korea many times until today and, i have friends that i talk sometimes through kakaotalk to see if they are ok.
