Just thought I would correct something, zb1 recent album Melting Point was confirmed by hanteo themselves to have surpassed 2.2M sales on their website, which is 200K more than their debut. Also they surpassed the 2M sale mark in just a week with their recent album which was heavily covered in Korea media. The recent why its lower on circle chart is because the company hasn’t been shipping albums or havent updated the results.

Respectfully, KARA didn’t come from a survival show. They were active from 2007-2014 (with a member shift after their debut album) before KARA Project became a thing. It was only to find a replacement member after Nicole and JiYoung weren’t allowed to continue with the group due to leaving DSP. Even though they (at least Nicole to my knowledge) didn’t want to leave the group, just the company. While YoungJi did witness a lot of popularity after winning KARA Project, it was because of her time on Roommate. It wasn’t from her association with KARA.

I don’t like survival shows because they exploit these kids dreams for views above their wellbeing. I remember when pd101 would evil edit a kid and said kid would receive death threats. Also these survival shows debut children without considering the implications of what it means to be working in the industry. Wonyoung debuted at 14 and she has been receiving hate since then which I know isn’t good for her mental health. Upcoming unis is mostly kids as young as 12? and idk how they are going to work when sk mandated that kids should not be working more than 2-4 hours a day and should be going to school.

The fact that you didn't mention Fantasy Boys show. Universe Ticket did a better job than FB. Mnet have the advantage of viewer reach but they are evil as well. Survival shows are losing their charm.

To answer the question at the end. We already are basically seeing the change happen. Before it used to be "debuting a group" now these survival shows are more and more about "international groups". Sixteen was to debut a JYP group (no intentions of making it "international") it debuted 9 members with 3 Japanese members and 1 Taiwanese member. IOI was all Korean members except for 1 member (and Somi since she's bi-racial). Iz*One later was a joint venture to debut a Japanese-Korean group debuting with 12 members which 3 were Japanese (the ratio of international members is still less than Twice). Kep1er was highly promoted as "a global group" and at first it made it seem like the goal was to get a 3-3-3 Chinese-Japanese-Korean group. The group ended up having 3 foreign member and 1 bi-racial member which is about the same ratio as Twice. Universe Ticket also was marketed to be a Global thing. Even the current Chuang which is happening in Thailand right now is not market as Chuang 2024 but as Chuang Asia. I think little by little these shows are being market to over seas fans. Even Queendom Puzzle if I remember correctly was saying their group was a "Global" group.

Zerobaseone seems to be doing well, but I don't follow them closely enough to say for sure. I wouldn't mind if the survival show is fading out of popularity. I've always believed that the popularity of survival shows and resulting groups were the origin of marketing trends I don't like. I guess a lot of people grew tired of it.

to be honest I don't think physical sales are a fair way to determine a groups success anymore, enhypen are very successful and recently surpassed 10m monthly listeners on Spotify. Bite Me was also the 2nd most streamed boy group song of 2023 on Spotify behind only BTS. they are doing very well and continue to reach new heights. some of the most streamed 4th gen boy group songs of all time belong to enhypen (fever, drunk-dazed, polaroid love, and now bite me) people love to undermine enhypen's success and I never understood why. Mind you, the only boy group with more monthly listeners on Spotify than enha currently is bts, despite enha not having a comeback in 4 months.

agree that starship didn't just ride fame of Yujin and Wonyong but capitalized both of them well, and still to this day managing and promoting IVE very good. starship is doing what big 3 is failing to do with some of their groups.

i remember watching island and being so angry at the way the korean netizens were voting. it always seems as if they vote to sabotage the groups before they even debut. the group has 3 talented boys who can survive on their own and 3 randoms who were voted in for giggles. then you have the filler english speaking boy but also they way they sabotaged K with the evil editing over an issue that was literally insignificant.
