Hey friends so I have a $$$ saving tip for you! The Ocean Paper palette used here is ❤️🔥❤️🔥 but I get it, it’s a big splurge (they do have smaller options btw)… So I’ve put together a list of more affordable, more opaque watercolor palettes that will work beautifully if you’d like to try this! OR add a touch of white acrylic to any watercolor mix (mix on a plate or something off palette though) and you’ll have the same effect!! www.amazon.com/ideas/amzn1.account.AG4LOSK277UM4TIEUKBEZWGGDOAQ/3I9NI0UOXWKCJ?type=explore

(edited: I did like the second one the best.)I actually was ok with it before adding markers, but that is just me. I't probably because I am old. I would like to see you use more colored pencils with your watercolors too. But i also wanted to let you know that Because your style is different than mine and you said one time that you are here for beginners only. Well you keep coming up on my stream and the more I watch you I like you and find you helpful. I do a lot of portraits and your floral and leaf experience is helpful because I use many florals for my backgrounds. but besides that, you have a lot more knowledge than you are perhaps ready to brag about and so you are helpful for all stages. One thing I know is that you will leave me feeling better about what I do, plus give me some helpful tips with any video I watch.

I loved both pieces, but the second one had such a great whammy of contrast! My favorite part of the whole thing was when you said "Tell me what you think...Let's start the conversation". I feel that was an invitation for feedback or ideas without feeling like i might be hurting your feelings or starting conflict if my views didn't align with yours. It was just something we don't hear enough of, let's just have a conversation, not a debate, or a lesson, or a lecture. thank you :)

I love the tip to not leave your project with that "meh" feeling, but actually do it again taking what you learned from the first attempt and hopefully leaving things on a better note. Really enjoyed seeing what you took from the first painting and how you changed the second one as a result!

I honestly didn't know that watercolor would work on a black canvas! But opaque ones....or like you said, mixing acrylic with watercolor (never thought of that either!!) I am so thankful for all your amazing ideas and experiments. I have one to share with you too. I sometimes throw black matte acrylic paint on my art journal pages and paint over top of that with acrylic colors. It's a fun, cheap way to get the black background. I really liked both of your canvases, but the second one "sang" to me. That red hit the high soprano! Love you.

I've heard that a lot, people not 'loving' a sketch book, there fells like a lot of pressure to keep the weird experiements. I feel like on youtube there is an expectation to have this beautiful sketchbook ... but I have kids and thats not going to happen so I started a new sketchbook... and its messy and has scribbles from my kids and if they draw over my pictures thats ok... and it is freeing and has allowed me to enjoy making art again.

I was in a better mode after watching you today, you're energy and attitude do show the joy in your art. I loved the 2nd painting best because I appreciated the lessons learned in playing in the first. TY for another great class in composition.

I used to hate sketchbook, mainly because there was pressure attached to them when I was studying art, so understand why they might not be for everyone, but I love them now. 😊 I love going off on tangents with my art supplies and just playing, so I really appreciate it when I find someone else who approaches art differently. 😊 I love both canvases, but the second one in particular gave me itchy fingers (which is always good 😂).

I completely agree with you about sketchbooks. I always hated being made to keep them in school. I literally only use the cheapo Canson XL watercolor and mixed media spiral sketchbooks for swatching colors to decide on a color palette for a piece or testing out a technique or mark making quickly before actually applying it to what I’m working on. Then in the back of the sketchbook I sometimes sketch out ideas that I have for pieces if I’m seeing something in my head that I want to capture before I lose it. They look like a toddler’s coloring book, but I don’t care! I just don’t like the idea of art living in a sketchbook, never to be seen again. When I had to keep one, there was also too much pressure to make sure everything in my nice, expensive sketchbook was a “keeper.” I feel like I held myself back from truly experimenting at times because I didn’t want something ugly in my sketchbook. For experimenting or quick pieces, I instead like using smaller, relatively inexpensive blocks or precut paper that is maybe 5x7 or 6x8. I’m also a collage artist, so anything that is not as successful as I had hoped is fair game to become collage material!

I love watching you do it, but gosh, the day I can just make art and not worry about whether I like the end result or not… that will be the day that will make a huge shift in my learning path, I think… The sky in the hyacinth painting is AMAZING 💕❣️❣️ BTW, hyacinth one of my very favorite flowers- the smell 😃💕❤️❣️❣️❣️❣️ Wow, to be in that field would be incredible!! What wonderful memories!! My favorite was the tulip fields, for overall feel. It was really neat to watch those markets blend in with the watercolors and the tulips 🌷 even in the front section turned so soft and off focus in a beautiful way. Great video!

I have some black paper sitting in the drawer which I do not know exactly what to do with it. I have some posca pens which have not tried out yet. What I usually do is return the new art supply before giving it a fair chance. I really liked the second art piece of the sky. I love to experiment, but hung up on waste. I doubt I would do this on a canvas, but sure would have a blast practicing on black paper first! I love the play, but ....well... waste kinda kills my soul. Lol.

I understand I do. I always feel a pang of restraint when I think about painting on my 300lb/600 gsm arches. But then I remember. 1. There are two sides to every paper, even canvas ☺️ 2. Every stroke, every moment teaches me something so there truly is no waste. 3. If it’s really bad, I can spatter it with some acrylic/metallics and make gift tags, place cards or flat notes for thank you’s!

The second one was my favourite of the two. I liked the wider variety of strokes. The strokes in the foreground were tulip shaped and five the viewer more of an idea of what the art work is about. In the first you would have to know before viewing that it was a field of hyacinths.
@KristyRice

Kristy, I love these! I love the total immersion you seem to have while doing them! I love the implication of sunshine after a storm in the first, with the intense colours, and the way the sky looks like it’s about to rain down on the stunning tulips in the second. Have you heard of Cosmic Shimmer Pixie Powders and Pixie Bursts? They are shiny, shimmery dye mixes in powder form, usually used in mixed media, card making etc. dust your palaver with a few puffs of powder, spray water and they just burst until colour. But you can then use a brush to move that colour around, and sometimes you accidentally grab a clump of powder and leave an interesting trail of intense colour where that brush has been, I don’t think you’d be able to actually paint with them as such, and if you did you’d have to do something small - they’re prohibitively expensive for that usage. But if anyone can use them within a watercolour and make it beautiful, you can! I’m in Uk or I’d send you some! They come in shades from the darkness xx of the night sky above the poles, the darkest dark but also filled with stars, to the palest of the the tiniest pearls, from the most intense, in your face Egyptian blues, the most delicate just-pink petal of the dog rose. I was using them the other day to show my mam and I just thought I MUST ASK Kristy if she knows of these!

I actually love using black paper for colored pencils and oil pastels, and tend to prime all my canvases with black paint. I also painted a thirty foot long fence in my yard and primed with black. Seems like it makes it easier to get depth. Love your paintings, especially the tulips!

I love how I can live vicariously through your amazing creativity!💜❤️ For me the blockage to trying something like this is buying yet more art supplies… My addictions to all premium brands of watercolour paint has already left me wearing only leggings and t-shirts! 🤣 And I still need opaque watercolours yet! In your first painting about 2 mins before you did it I was saying use your fingers…🤣 I do have to say though that painting number two is my favourite! 🥰🥰
