We will be updating our Krocks In The Kitchen Instagram ( / krocksinthekitchen ) and Facebook ( / krocksinthekitchen ) as soon as we can tomorrow or Tuesday to let you know how the surgery went.
After being diagnosed with Stage 3 (possibly 4) ovarian cancer during surgery on my left ovary back in June 2022, I decided to pursue treatment at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. So far I have been through six rounds of paclitaxel and carboplatin. I have also had two inconclusive biopsies (on my liver and lymph nodes). Tomorrow I am having tumor debulking surgery that will include a laparotomy, hysterectomy, salpingo-oophorectomy, lymphadenectomy and omentectomy.

Sending you prayers. I had a routine 45 minute hysterectomy scheduled. 5 hours later, I no longer had a uterus, omentum, "fat pad", appendix, cervix and had my intestines scraped (my cancer is like pain spatter). They found 2 types of cancer...one removed completely with the surgery. The other is a rare form of ovarian. No chemo or radiation - the type I have doesn't respond to either. I take arimidex. That's it since surgery. Given 50% chance of survival at the 5 year mark. It's been 7 and I just had my annual check-up with my oncologist and I continue to be in remission. Miracles DO happen! Sending you prayers for healing and the lack of cancer everywhere!

This is for Brian - day of surgery she will come back feeling great as she will have a lot of drugs on board. Post-op days 2-4 are tough. Lots of fluid changes going on in the body, pain and lots of that sort of thing. I’m a nurse, and also the main support for my mom who went through the same exact surgery 2 years ago. It’s a big a** surgery and the body takes time to recover. Thinking of you as the support person!

So happy that the surgery will happen tomorrow - and I know that you'll be FINE!!!!! I posted a few months ago. I was diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer, Stage 3, in 2006 - I had symptoms from Dec. 2000 but I didn't know that it was cancer. I didn't have medical insurance so I didn't go to the doctor until November 2005 when I turned 65 years and was eligible for Medicare. I'm single - no family - and didn't ask one question of the doctor/oncologist/surgeon. They didn't give me any information. I didn't know if I'd survive - as my mother died of Ovarian Cancer in Jan. 1982 (the doctors were clueless in those days.) Today the medical community is so much more educated with so many new treatments, drugs, etc. I had a total hysterectomy, removed 1 lymph node. I had 6 rounds of chemo and when I got home, a home-health nurse came to my house around 4 times to give me shots, epogen/neupogen. It took me one year to recover - and I've been cancer-free from 2007 - 16 years!!!! No one would ever know that I was sick and I'm now 82 years young. Good Luck to Both of You. You're the most adorable couple. Sandy in Calif.

I'm so glad the surgery is happening. I didn't like the idea that they would "give up" without knowing for certain if the lesions were cancer...especially when your mom has liver lesions. Even if it is expected to be cancer, it isn't definitely and so they should be fighting for every little chance you can get for full cure. I'm glad that you advocated for yourself. If it turns out to have metastasized, this surgery will put you in a better place for fighting the remaining cancer. YAY! Good luck and safe recovery!

Otomy = cut / incision. Ectomy = removal / cutting out. You are right, it IS ‘oof’ for oopherectomy. Salpingectomy is removal of fallopian tubes. Oopherectomy removal of ovaries. A great friend of ours was diagnosed with neuroendocrine cancer of pancreas last year .. they initially refused surgery because of location & extension of it but finally said actually maybe we can do this. She had her pancreas, spleen, gall bladder and a large section of small intestine removed alongside a part of her stomach. Looking at her now, 4-5 months later you’d never know she’d been through all that. Neuroendocrine tumours are known to often be very slow growing and act very differently from others, so i’m thrilled that you are able to move along with surgery. I had adenocarcinoma of colon ten years ago, i had 17 inches removed and i believe it was 37 lymph nodes - i expected to wake with a temporary colostomy but didn’t. My mum was also diagnosed with the same and had a permanent colostomy at the age of 80. She coped very well with it. I believe this is the type of uterine cancer cells you had? Try to avoid dr google - go to reputable cancer charity sites. Google is full of woe when it comes to any form of cancer, primarily because very few write blogs etc about successful outcomes, because there’s nothing more to say really. Charity forums usually also have folk who have been through successful treatment and come out the other side fine. I was a forum moderator for a while on beating bowel cancer (uk) and there are guys there who were given terminal diagnosis over ten years ago and are still here. With my friend it’s now all considered a chronic illness that she has to deal with. Constantly monitored. She is a type 3 diabetic (due to removal) and is only daily antibiotics for life as she has no spleen. Her scar went from underarm to underarm below chest level, extensive cut .. but it healed beautifully. I feel your relief at having this done, as well as the natural anxiety that goes with it. It sounds like you have a superb surgeon with a lot of empathy which is perfect. See you when it’s all done!

I can tell you guys are feeling good about the surgery tomorrow. I am so glad and hope that you get great news from the results. I teach a medical terminology course! "Otomy" is to cut into, "ectomy" is to remove. So they will cut into the abdomen (laparotomy) and remove the uterus and ovaries (hysterectomy/oophorectomy). I know you know this, it's just the teacher in me! I will be thinking about you tomorrow and will look forward to hearing an update. Take care.

They gave me a blood transfusion and I felt so much better. You will have physical therapists getting you out of the bed and walking with a walker as soon as possible. And, yes, it hurts but they say you have to move that it’s not good to stay in bed. The worst part for me was trying to get out of the bed. It was excruciating until one of the PTs told me to use the bed rail to turn on my side then use my elbow to help me up. It really does help. Take care. I know you’ve got this.

I had the same surgery 2 months ago, ovarian cancer stage 3, right, it’s a very large scar. They also found something suspicious in my lever but it went away with the 2 second chemo. This surgery was very important, I’m very glad they did it. They didn’t find metastasis 🙏🏻. I’m finishing my chemo, 2 more to go!..I wish you all the best, you’re gonna be totally fine Jessica!!..❤Greetings from The Netherlands 🇳🇱.

Praying for you tomorrow! 12 years ago I had a full hysterectomy because they thought I had ovarian cancer. But turned out I did not have ovarian cancer, but I did have uterine cancer despite clear biopsy days before surgery. I pray that this surgery will provide answers and will guide the Dr with future treatments 🙏

“Too many cooks…” sometimes is a bad idea. I had 2 types of cancer (I have a cancer gene), and had 7 oncologists at one time…it was like herding cats. Keeping track of all the information and advocating for oneself during cancer is a full time job in itself. Happy you’re getting the surgery, because you are correct about when they decide against surgery that’s not good with cancer. Best to you.

Hi you guys! So excited for you! You will do great. I had the exact same surgery . Breast bone to public, bone. After surgery, don’t remember anything for the first week after. Which is good. They keep you doped up 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉 I was in the hospital for a week. Mayo is just the best! So glad you are there as I know you be getting excellent care! I’ll be praying for you and your surgeon tomorrow. Its a big step, but one you need to take. I was in OK shape when they sent me home and took it easy for the next two weeks. Went to the grocery and rode one of those carts, but still was able to do it. You will be fine. I’m a big wuss, and I did it! You go girl!!

I'm so sorry you're going through this and have had to wait so long for surgery. I had an abdominal hysterectomy almost a year ago for a large (cantaloupe size) fibroid tumor. This is a major surgery!! I knew it was major, but had no idea just how major it was at the time. My pain block wore off...oh goodness...PAIN!! I'm not telling you this to scare you, I'm telling you this to prevent you from doing what I did. I felt so good that I just went about my daily life...granted a little slower, but no change. That was a HUGE mistake!! The night of day 5 was complete agony, and I stayed that way for about a week. So please, do not over do it. Even if you feel pretty good, just don't do it. Get up and walk around a little, but mainly rest. I don't want anyone to feel the way I did. I sincerely hope this surgery, along with your cancer treaments, this will help you and get you on the road to recovery. I will pray for you and your health!! God bless. P.S. Get lots of rest. Walk when you can, but don't over do it. Use stool softeners, and allow others to help. I really do wish you all the best!!!

I pray that your surgery went well yesterday. I had 2 lesions on my liver but had ablations done and then 6 months of chemo pills at home, and after 3-1/2 years nothing has reappeared, just scarring. That's the only place that they said showed any cancer (cholangiocarcainoma) so I'm just still dealing with non-alcoholic cirrhosis of the liver and is looking pretty good with meds and labwork every 6 months and an endoscopy every other year now (used to be every year) as I have been dealing with this and hepatic encephalopathy for 6 years now. Best wishes for you, truely. My liver doctor at KUMC, Dr Olson, left there in December and is now at Mayo, man I will miss him so much.

Jessica, I had a hysterosalpingooopherectomy when I was 30. I had my children (3) and the 3 c-sections had damaged my reproductive organs and they required removal. I did fine. I really don’t feel like I ever went through menopause (although I am getting hot flashes now, at 71 - who knows why 🤷🏻‍♀️). You will do great. We have come a long way since the 70’s as far as keeping us safe during surgery. Fun fact: I have a hereditary bone disease which has given me a ridiculous tally of major surgeries. 42 during my lifetime! You have Mayo clinic! I had one orthopedic specialist who was a proctologist- I had a biopsy for suspected breast cancer and the surgery was performed by a proctologist. I never had any complications in all my surgeries except a little nausea from anesthesia they used “back in the day” I didn’t want to post my life story…sorry. What I wanted to say was if I ever had a man that looked at me the way Brian looks at you my life would be complete. But nobody has looked at me that way. Ever. 2 1/2 marriages, I have never seen that look. You are one lucky lady. I choose to believe your luck will continue and your weird medical condition will weirdly be easier than the first thought to cure. Good luck tomorrow. Don’t be nervous. It’s going to be painful, but they have drugs to help that.
