This is about my book on the experience of being a Roman. Populus. Living and Dying in the Wealth, Smoke and Din of Ancient Rome. Populus is published by Abacus in the UK and the University of Chicago Press in the US (where it's Populus. Living and Dying in Ancient Rome). April 2024.

Now that sounds right up my street! I love this kind of history. I do a lot of genealogy and spend far too many hours daydreaming about what the past was really like to live in. Just the ordinary things like what people ate, how they celebrated, what they did in their spare time. It makes me feel connected to the past and makes me realise that things were not so very different in some ways. Of course, people in 2000 years' time will be curious about us today, but they will have the advantage (presumably) of countless kinds of media from our time, I suppose much of which will be preserved for historians to pore over. What on earth they'd say about us, I dread to think!

Looks like a tasty read. I've been watching the first season of "Domina" a TV new-ish TV show on DVD. So I'm definitely up for something that's a more reliable historical account of life in Rome.

Special ordered a couple copies for my bookstore. I've got a few regulars in North Carolina who can't get enough of your books. Someone asked me about this one, today, and I assured him not to worry, it was on the way ;)

I really enjoy your videos, particularly how you incorporate your own life experiences or modern experiences with those of your historical subjects (Pepys, Rome, Egypt, etc.). I am a schoolteacher and its always a challenge to get 12-13-year-olds to see that what happened 200 or 2000 years ago was relevant to their lives. Thank you for work. I look forward to your new book, I am currently reading Pharaohs of the Sun.

It sounds exciting. Lindsey Davis does a great job of describing the streets of ancient Rome in her Falco books.

A question for you Guy? Is it possible that the name Pontius Pilate is a title not a name.Pilate a type of Roman cap. Pontius, a representative of the College of Pontius that administrated the religions of Rome from the temple of the Universal Pantheon. In Latin the Catholic pantheon. A Capped Pontius from the Catholic Temple. A title and a twist of fate.
