Actually, the aero spike engine does exist. My grandfather worked on the x-33 (real life ssto). It used four aero spikes to get to orbit. They built one aero spike for testing but the x-33 project was cancelled because it was deemed impossible.

Yeah, my first interplanetary mission, TECHNICALLY, was a fly-by of Duna. Then my pilot, who I made sure was not Jeb OR Val, got stranded in a solar orbit. My second mission was a Gilly landing, and I think three ion engines were overkill. Now, Bill's on his way to Dres with only a probe core to keep him company.

One of the best tutorials I would recommend is showing how far/which planets you can get to with things that arn't the biggest Rocket. spacecraft built with the biggest engine being the T-30 engine type craft. It would be useful for career and science builds where we need to unlock the final rocket. Love the Videos keep up the work!
@anthonypelchat
@anthonypelchat 6 жыл бұрын
I would really like to see what you could come up with in Career mode while trying to only build SSTO Spaceplanes. Admittedly, it would only be difficult until you land on one of the moons. Maybe instead, while on Science mode, see about conquering the two primary challenges; getting your first SSTO SP into orbit using low tech and very few parts, then try to land an SSTO on the Mun before nukes. I can only get that second part to work with refueling.
@anthonypelchat
@anthonypelchat 6 жыл бұрын
latt mowne Sorta. His first SSTO was a rocket, not a space plane. And first Mun lander was a shuttle. Still, Thrimm has done more for early career sstos than anyone on KZfaq. Actually, I think he is the only one who has done early career sstos, though Matt has a huge amount of pretty early options as well. I learn everything I know about sstos from these two.

Regarding aerobraking, they say the place in the real Solar System which takes the least delta-V for a return mission is Mars's moon Phobos. You get aerobraking on the way there, and leaving the surface takes almost no delta-V.
@LuckeWent
@LuckeWent 6 жыл бұрын
For landing on Duna I suppose the orbit insertion direction wouldn't matter a huge deal since the extra m/s surface velocity will likely be aerobraked away anyway. Getting the direction right on ascent however is alot more helpful, and saves alot of dV as you noted.

Oh man.. reminds me of the first time I landed a kerbal on Duna... I'd accidentally bounced the lander hard, broke the landing gear and snapped off the engine. I had to then send a drone ship to rescue jeb. However, I forgot solar panels on the last stage of the rescue ship, and at the time I was unable to operate it properly without electrics. so.... after managing to get jeb into duna orbit, I had to send another ship to rescue the rescue pod.

yes, Duna was also my first interplanetary mission. the thing is, i had hit up Mun, Minmus and Kerbin so much by then, Duna was a piece of cake. well, to be fair, if i had not known about the low atmosphere density/pressure, it may not have been as easy for me... my problem is places with fairly high gravity and no atmosphere.

Kerbin, 90 mps: solar panel destroyed by aero forces. Duna sandstorm: solar panel is shiny Btw, cuz of low pressure in duna atmosphere sandstorms are fine unless there are rocks and sand. Also btw, the solar panel should be destroyed anyways because there WERE rocks and sand.

On all your launches you end up tapering the throttle before you're out of the atmosphere. Before I thought you were trying to keep TWR under 2.0 to keep the gravity turn coming, but sometimes it looks like you're trying to keep the apoapsis 1 minute in front of you. What limits are you trying to stay within?

im not new to the game but never really used fuel or made rockets as i commonly use cheats to make silly things that somehow fly. I have recently tried to test my skill as ive used no cheats to get a rocket to duna and managed to guess almost exactly how much delta v i needed to get there and it was all good until the landing where i had only used 2 parachutes instead of 4, it bounced on its legs but didnt explode and managed to land upside down sacrificing 3 of the 6 antennas. also it was a ship with no return planned as it only used parachutes and landing legs.
