TIME STAMPS: 5:20 Fixing My Sandals; 16:48 Tour of New Hostel; 22:33 New Gizmo for my GoPro
One of my favorite aspects to living and traveling in Asia is that it is often far easier (and cheaper) to accomplish daily tasks. In Taiwan, for example, getting a new muffler on your scooter can take thirty minutes. You simply drive up to the shop, they remove the old muffler and put on the new one right away, and they generally don't charge for the labor. You just pay for the new muffler. In Canada, the same task could take weeks as they have to order in the new muffler and schedule your repair for next month. And then they charge you a fortune.
And if your sandals are broken in Canada, the normal thing to do is to throw them away and buy new ones. It would cost more to repair them than to buy new ones. But in Asia, you can find small street-side repair stalls for just about anything. And on this day, I went in search of one of these stalls to have my sandals repaired. They are obviously worn out and it's time to buy new sandals, but I figured that with some repairs, I could get use them for another month or two.
Cheers,
Douglas (AKA The Cycling Canadian)

What a simple, down to earth, easy going man, admire you Doug for all your qualities, unheard of in America or Canada, not the usual kind of “cocky behavior” seen in most North American men. You are a gentle, simple soul and I love watching all your adventure videos in different parts of the world. Be well

those streetside repair shops are so convenient, effective and affordable!! Unfortunately and sadly those are going away in Yangon!! When I was growing up there was a repair shop in my neighborhood where an old gentleman repaired all kinds of bags like backpacks, purses, travel bags, luggage and so on. He was so good at fixing that the repaired bags were a whole lot better than when they were new.

A grand tour of the your room is really very extravagant . I can see why the aircon is a must - it would be suffocating in no time. Streets catering to a particular type of consumer or business item is common in the subcontinent. I'd just got my sandals repaired after damaging them similarly catching a badly laid paver block.

It's so interesting to see that in your videos all the time you are the only tourist around 🤔.... And I thought Myanmar was a popular tourist destination..... I will certainly love to visit this country very badly 😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
@PlanetDoug

That first visit took place in the low season, so there weren't many other tourists around. I saw very few other foreigners even in Bagan. Even when I took the train, I ended up with a train car all to myself. It was empty except for me. And the same thing for my boat from Bagan to Mandalay. The boat could hold something like 50 people, but I was the only passenger. I'm sure in the high season when the temperatures are cooler, there are a lot more visitors, but my guess is that it won't feel too crowded even then. You're sure to come across other tourists at all the main attractions, but take a walk through any normal neighborhoods, and you'd probably feel like you had the whole country to yourself. 😀

I read somewhere electricity demands is exceeding supply in Myanmar. Power cut is unavoidable during peak hour. About half of the populations still not connected to the grid. It will be interesting if you could get to show how off the grid peoples live their lives.

Power was luxury to say the least in rural area. Even in the big city, there will be power out non stop in the summer because we are relying on the hydro dam most of the time because all our natural gas and half are dam are 'lend' to Thailand and especially China for 'shitty' tons of profit.

Mr.Canadian 5000 kyats is definitely excessive. May be 2500 kyats is prorate? A few years back I accidentally watched your KZfaq posts and now a bit addicted. BTW, I was born in Burma and nice to see back from your KZfaq posts about different detailed information and versions of different places Rangoon, Mandalay and so on. Have you ever been to Ava, Sagai , Inlay lake?

I notice several flickering in your videos when you point to any light source in Myanmar. If I not wrong, your GoPro set to 60Hz frequency. The standard voltage in Myanmar is 230V and frequency is 50Hz. If you switch to 50Hz, your GoPro won’t flicker as much.

5000 kyats is pretty more than a local would pay on perfectly wearable one. But it was Thingyan so ok i guess. 3000 kyats - 2$ would be a proper price. I think he did a good job too as far as i can tell ofcourse :P

You seen to have lost some weight from your bout of illness, though you have gotten back to your normal self and spirits. The change of hostel has guven us a chance to see a duffeeent area of Yangon. BTW, I have this burning desire to know the reason why we can't see motorcyleson the streets. Why is that and the reason behind it. An informed reply to that would be very much appreciated. Frquent blackouts owing to inadequate power supply can be very frustrating for computer usage and any other appliances that rely on electricity. I am glad in my hometown, power supply gets desrupted when there is powerful lightning and thunder that often trips my surge protector. It is corrected by resetting manually, in a couple of seconds. Aside from it, it is extremely rare for a general power failure.

@PlanetDoug
@PlanetDoug 4 жыл бұрын
I looked into getting a new battery when I was back in Malaysia, but I couldn't get one. All the shops told me that a battery for this particular model was unavailable. Turns out that they do seem to be available if you order online. I just never got around to doing that. It's always a bit tricky placing online orders when you don't have a permanent address for shipping. 🙂 The dream is to get a new laptop at some point. We'll see how that goes.

@@PlanetDoug That is a pity. If you could get one, ideal for a travel laptop. Maeby now your sitting in Thailand for a longer time?
