The squatting cable row just killed me. Making everything way more challenging for your body and back for absolutely no reason. I guess this is where people at my gym get these wacky exercise ideas.
@nowayjose596
@nowayjose596 Жыл бұрын
That's definitely a common theme. I actually place part of the blame on the training montage in Rocky IV 😅 If you watch older body building videos with Ronnie Coleman, Lee Priest, etc you see similar ideas about training in 100+ degree non-air conditioned gyms bc harder = better a la Rocky, as if your maximum output isn't limited by the heat before you stroke out. At least in Rocky you can make the argument that the extreme conditions prepared him for the extreme conditions of a fight, but in general anything that limits your maximum force output of the targeted muscles (instability, extreme temperatures, non-targeted muscle fatigue, etc) is going to be to the detriment of hypertrophy and strength gains. Let's be honest here: Ivan Drago was the one taking the superior approach of working hard AND smart 😉

@@nowayjose596 My favourite is people who do cardio wearing a hoodie or windbreaker to increase their sweat rate. @@yewtewbstew547 I don't get the hoodie thing at all. I understand wearing one to help you warm up quicker, but I've never understood why people continue to wear them throughout their workout bc I've never been in a gym that was so cold I had trouble staying warm while lifting. It isnt theoretically optimal but if it gets him in the gym, gets him through the workouts without him hating every second, then i think the trainer did his job Im like that in the gym as well for many exercises. It still makes me laugh that this body transformation was not required for that role at all. Nanjiani got so excited about being cast in a superhero movie that he jumped on gear on his own initiative.

It's possible but I doubt it. There's a thing that happens to women (and probably unimportant male co-stars) where after you get a role your agent or casting director or whoever says 'you want to look your best so lose 15lbs and whiten up those teeth). This is usually said to people who are already unusually attractive and skinny.

@davek7706 It's true. The producers of the movie talked about it. Also, the rest of the male cast (eg, Benedict Wong and Brian Tyree Henry) didn't exactly have show ready physiques.

As a wrestler and someone who does MMA, the zercher squat is very good for combat sports, especially grappling ones, as you need to produce strength from that exact position in grappling for many different things, and it teaches you to combine the force of your back and arms with your legs in that position. With that being said, if you aren’t a combat sports athlete or a strongman, there is no need for this exercise, there are much better ways to grow your legs, where your arms and back aren’t fatiguing at the same time or even before your legs.

I love that you can break this stuff down and weed out the nonsense. A lot of this is understanding basic anatomy and mechanics of physiology.. Unfortunately there are too many people out there that don't use their brains and just copy celebrities and influencers, only to get injured.. You are saving lots of people from needless strain and potential injury.

I do Zercher Squats as part of my Judo S&C program at the moment. Its really helped my underhook positions for my throws. I can Yagura-nage people a lot easier. Also its helped me be stronger with over/under position and getting some good hip throws from that position (Uchi-mata, Haraigoshi's). Agree that for bodybuilding it might not be the best movement, but for athletes it's a pretty good movement.

For the sake of bodybuilding though, and it's not like our guy Kumail is a martial artist or anything... The stimulus to fatigue ratio is so atrocious that you're basically out of commission for the entire day that you program them in, or at least I would be. But I do like the sensation and I only need a barbell and weights for it. No squat rack needed and god is there a lack of squat racks in my town

Say what you want about the power plate, it is the best tool for building mind-muscle connection. Also it is the most passive way to warm up ( everyone is bored of that). Also it DOES make exercise harder, and if that's not enough you can grab some plates while you are on it.

I never considered hitting rear delts first and finishing on front raise. The whole fatigue curve following along is an interesting concept. I can't wait to try that.

@@zemm9003 Very cool. For myself my current workout has me doing a calisthenic shoulder routine to help me improve my handstands and develop my planche training. Incorporating a few quick sets of flyes at the end to really toast the deltoids does sound like a fun way to end the session.

appreicate learning that optimal sequence for training delts would be to super set rear delt raises, then side delt raises, then front delt raises. I can definitely front raise more than i can side raise, and side raise more than I can rear raise. good advice on this one
