STORYLINE:
Reactions to the news that deposed leader Saddam Hussein was sentenced to hang appeared muted in the Kurdish city of Irbil on Sunday.
While some people watched the verdict on television, much of the city went about their business as usual.
One man expressed his feelings, saying "It is a historical victory and a triumph for the Kurdish people. We are very happy on this day because it is a historic day."
Serdar Hirki, a member of the Kurdistan Parliament considered the verdict as justice not only for the Kurdish people but for all Iraqis.
"Today we have achieved justice and this justice is not only for the Kurdish people but also for the Shiite & Sunni. This man oppressed the Iraqi people and ruled the country badly and, thank God, today he got what he deserved," he said.
Saddam was sentenced to death by Iraq's High Tribunal for crimes against humanity, along with his half brother and former intelligence chief Barzan Ibrahim, and Awad Hamed al-Bandar, head of the former Revolutionary Court.
