I actually knew her a little bit when I lived in Boston- I would see her playing on the subway platforms (most often on the Red Line, at Park Street) and in Harvard Square on Friday and Saturday nights. My friend Kevin had a crush on her. We were not close friends, but we were friendly, and would chat here and there. If anyone is questioning whether Mary Lou is putting on an act here, she isn't. She is an authentically nice person.

Hello anyone reading. There was MUCH more to this interview than just this short piece. I hope that someday they release the whole thing because it was the only time I actually ever told this story with anyone. (ON camera, anyway)..... I talked about the loss of my dear friend Elliott Smith (who was a little brother to me, and how I looked out for him, and how we shared time on the road, and our friendsip.....), Elliott also passed away....And I talked about the fact that, if Kurt had the chance to have met Elliott (the window of time between them meeting each other was tiny) -Maybe 5 months. Kurt would have adored Elliott. If they had gotten the chance to meet, I honestly think they would have made music together, and quite possibly, saved each other's lives through the love of music, and what they could have balanced out, and given each other. But alas, it never happened. But my God, I SO wish Kurt had hung on long enough to have met, befriended, and ultimately made music with Elliott. In the "extended" interview (that you do NOT see here), I told that story as well. Elliott was in Portland after finishing College at Hampshire, and Kurt died just a couple months before. Man, if they had ONLY gotten the chance to meet. It should have happened, and it would have been amazing for both of them. For Kurt to find Elliott. It quite possibly could have saved him. Just saying. Someday I hope this entire interview (not just THIS clip) will be shown. There was SOOO much more to it, and so much more I said about those first few months of Nirvana's breaking, etc.......anyway, It meant a lot to me, and I THOUGHT they were going to run the whole story about everything I said. But, they cut is short. ANyway.....In my mind, Kurt and Elliott are together and finally met. I miss them both SO very much.

Hey, Mary, thank you for sharing all of this. I'm sorry they disregarded so much of the interview. These large corporate media houses are awful, especially when it comes to deeply human things such as these. I highly recommend you reach out to Daniel Sarkissian here on KZfaq for an interview and an opportunity to speak about these things for posterity. He does a ton of Nirvana related interviews with people who knew and worked with the band, and I'm certain he would be thrilled to hear your stories about Kurt and Elliot. Most importantly, he wouldn't cut any of the interview out. Just something to consider. I think it's important for these stories to be told in full, and I would love to hear the details of what you've outlined here.

Kurt didn’t like nice girls. If he did he would have stayed with Tracy Marander. @Nathaniel Birthurth A common personality type? Seems like you're projecting some misogyny. I know a lot of women and none are like that. Besides, he made his choice knowing full well who she was, a former stripper with addiction and anger problems. He liked that. She had a bad reputation. He didn't care. Water seeks it's own level. I was at the mall buying "Nevermind" that week....possibly the next day after school. I vaguely remember riding my bike to the mall which was less than a mile from the school. Not too long after that I was with my church group w the Unitarian Church out in the mountains at some place you can rent a whole camp area. There was a band that played.....the kids from other Unitarian CHrich's from other cities were really into the flannel shirt attire and just dressing freaky. That was the first time I'd seen "moshing" and also the first time I'd heard Eddie Vedder's voice. The song "Black" was playing between sets and I remember being really transfixed by this song. That was quite a weekend. Never seen anything like it my whole life.
