After an hour long taxi ride with the craziest taxi driver in the whole of Eastern Europe, I finally made it to the village in the middle of nowhere. There I attempted to invade a Bulgarian Village home to see how the people live...Which did not go as planned.
Donkeys and Dogs tried to get me, Knives were pulled and sheep tried to ram me.
I was also later informed that my name in Bulgarian means "Penis"

Hahaha! Dying here of laughing. The Bulgarian village man with the red shirt thought that he could handle a bit of English while in the mean time he doesn't understand sh.t, so he was thinking that you want to buy land and he told you that the land next to his place is for sale but hes wasn't. He didn't know at all that you were asking him to take a look inside his house. He was sending you to the mayor for more info ;) Total misunderstanding there :)

The funny thing is that the taxi driver who is talking about gypsies as “they” is also a gypsy. In Bulgaria there varieties of gypsies that can be grouped according to the language they speak or religion they practice. There are gypsies who are visibly from gypsy background but will vehemently deny that. Those are the types who are the quickest to bring up the subject of gypsies so that they can refer to them as “they”. That’s what this taxi driver who grossly overcharged and cheated Kurt is doing.😀

The turning point was at the very beginning when you told the guy with the red shirt that you’re there to have a look at the VILLAGE. Since he didn’t speak any English he just assumed that you’re looking to buy land to build your VILLA on so naturally he said “no, my land is not for sale I live here”😂 and as a typical village somehow just a moment later the word had spread and everyone else was convinced you’re there to buy land haha

Omg I'm really mad about this video. I have seen most of your videos about Bulgaria and I loved them a lot... but this one really made me angry. First you go to a village where nobody speak in English because the people are veery old so most of them speak only Bulgarian and Russian because of the comunism... The first guy with the red shirt is a gypsy and the poor man does not understand a single word ,he was trying to help you really bad... he even send you to the mayor. The rest of the people were very kind and tried to help you too. The old guy with the knife is an typical Bulgarian grandpa that is usually very intelligent and can fix everything in the house and you can always see him with an axe because he is cutting trees in the yard or with a knife because he is fixing something... so somebody called him and he got out really fast wanting to help and forgot about the knife, he gave you his hand,he was reaaaaaaaaly kind even that he doesn't understand a single word . He was thinking that you were looking to buy a house and he even let you in and told you that if you want to see youbare welcome,I'm sure that he would even make you eat and drink rakia with him or he wold be ofended... That's how bulgarian hospitality is. But tha fact you go to a place without knowing a fuck about the village wtf did you expect????? Why don't you go with aome bulgarian friend from the city that speaks English and ask him to translate??? It's not so difficult. They are just great people judged because they don't speak the language that you want. Imagine me going to Germany speaking in Bulgarian only saying that the germans are racists because they don't understand me ,they don't help me,they don't give me a good work because i could understand only bulgarian costommers(I think its normal because if you can't speak the language you can't understand what do you have to do) I don't have anything else to say.

I think I agree with your comment. I think the idea that someone can go to some village in a foreign country, doesn't speak their language,and also just expecting people to invite you in their houses is quite disrespectful..... This guy would never do that in German, it's a Western mentality to romanticise poverty. I think it's very intrusive...and no one ever goes to Germany and expects people to just let them take pictures of their home.

Dear Kurt I just watched your video I would like to share couple things with you. First Bulgarians specially in small villages like that are the very welcoming people, friendly and warm hearted. If you ask them I can guarantee that they can help you with food, drinks and even to find you place to stay overnight. Its not true they refused to let them in their houses, simply because they did not understand you. Work on your Bulgarian my friend. Also there are dozens mobile apps, that can help you with translation or maybe find someone local to help you. Second for many years foreigners are visiting small villages like this one to buy a land or house and to live there (beautiful nature and cheap cost of life) If you pay attention all people from the video were talking to you and wanted to help you, but they were confused that you are looking to buy a house there not to look inside for your video blog. They were confused and since you were not able properly to ask them they assumed you want to get a house there. As you can see most of them are elderly people living very poor life. Do you think that if I visit small village in Germany and start asking random people to look inside their houses speaking Bulgarian they will let me ? And what would be their reaction ? Do you think anyone would do some extra effort and try to help me even without understanding me ? I had a chance to travel quite few countries on Europe and I know how I was treated as a foreigner and Bulgarian, even though these countries are labelled as democracy and civilized. For the taxi and most of the services in public sector in Bulgaria I have no comment... unfortunately we are far far away from proper customer service. I am Bulgarian and still I am disappointed with bad experiences. Try to be prepared little bit more next time, you can always print at home some sheets with the questions you want to ask in Bulgarian or use the google translation. At the end Bulgaria is a lovely place, very beautiful and amazing as long as you have someone to help you understand our lifestyle and mentality. Stay safe and wish you all the best.

Ok to get this clear. I read a lot of comments where people assume that kurt is from germany. He said one time earlier that he is south african and he is judst saying that he is german to get things easier in counries where the people might not know south africa, which is offensive to bulgarians cause bulgaria is a full mrmber of the european union and the young people there are well educated. Kurt can say a few things in german and i guess his grandfather was german but his father and his mother where both born and raised in south africa. I wrote this long comment because i am german and some people are offending kurt and germany. But kurt isn't able to represent germans in my opinion because we are always polite, friendly and respectful to other people and cultures we don't know.

Don`t get me wrong but it was all your fault. You can`t just take a taxi to somewhere and expect people who not knowing you, while being an unknown foreigner to them and most of those people couldn`t catch a single word of language you spoke, to let you in just like that. It`s a village after all. Small so it presumable that many of them aren`t much educated, so of course don`t know English. I`ve been in german village and I know how they look and feels like, but here is different. You could made a little research in advance. Most of them thought you have intension to buy their houses actually so they told you "NO". You had to choose a bigger village and more civilized one instead of this with less than 50 people population. I`m from Dobrich and this is the first time I`ve ever heard of this small village so it makes clear how odd and wrong your choice was at first place. At least couldn`t you used your Google Translator. I have to say it would be a way more easier to you if you ask a bulgarian friend or someone take you to some village. He would find neighbours or something that may be OK with the idea of some stranger get into their homes and make video of their homes and private belongings to spread it into KZfaq. Of course it makes a good impression if you first ask for permission before you get them and their properties on your video too, just saying from moral views, not to mention the law says that not only in Bulgaria, in many countries. Bulgarians hospitality is not an invitation for misappropriation you must know. You may had been just that guy wanted to show off on KZfaq with "Look at me I`m discovering new cultures" but your definitely not resourceful or smart in your approach, that`s for sure. And have you even noticed how poor all those people in the village live! In most small villages are like that and most of them may feel ashamed or humiliated when you exposing out fact that many other strangers in internet, that will maybe connect simply as their financial situation to whole bulgarian population and culture. Bulgarians are proud and your intensions may were different but I find your insolent behavior quite offensive. I doubt if this happened to you in your home unexpected without any earlier notifications you would just take some unknown man in your house even if you understood him though. So you may change your topic to "I APOLOGIZE to this village and agressive dog and donkey". And one more thing about English language, those people may not speak or understand it but they really tried to help you to buy a house because that`s what they understood comparing to not small part of educated germans speaking and understanding perfectly English but completely refuse of speaking in it on their territory even when it`s necessary unless it`s emergency.

As someone who lived in a Bulgarian village as a kid, I can comfortably say that they don't want to let anyone in, even neighbors. Mostly because everyone thinks someone wants to steal their shit, or because they don't want to embarrass the themselves by letting someone see the messy house, especially in small villages like this, there's chickens running around, aggressive dogs. It's not because of a lack of hospitality or hatred, just cuz we really don't want to come across as barbaric or unclean.

@@albaniantruffles This is probably the dumbest thing I've heard. Maybe you won't understand and that's okay, I'm not gonna blame you. I'm not saying that everywhere is EXTREME poverty. I'm saying is it doesn't matter if you work hard or no because things are long and hard to explain. You can't be "filthy rich" when your country is considered one of the poorest once probably in the whole continent. And there's a reason for that. There's also a reason for so many people to immigrate and work outside in other countries not because they like it and wanna be "filthy rich" but because they can't find a better opportunity or just want to help their families with money. The minimal (I think it's called "wage" in english but I'm not sure) is far from satisfying and far from enough to feed a whole family, pay taxes and be able to live properly. Unless you work in a high position with something like computers or something else like this you won't. We're literally considered Europe's "third-world" country not for no reason. It's not said by me. You can literally check out articles online. The reason are not the people because so many are working hard and it still may not be enough to help your family. That's why immigration is a thing right? Yes people can get money to live in a way but they some of them have to worry what they're gonna give to their kids at school like lunch money every day, pay for their excursions, books, pens, others school suplies, etc. Some of them are raised by a single parrent for example. I was mostly raised only by my mother and the state we've been in the past is not because she didn't work but because the money just simply weren't enough. I don't wanna go into detail with everything since it's the internet so I'll just leave it like this. But this argument that the people are sitting around and not doing anything is false. The government is to blame for the extreme corruption and embarassment it puts people through for the past years that's why there will be elections soon. And I don't think talking about it more will be a good idea because this comment itself is already too long but yeah. That's just how things are. Unless you live here and hear people's stories and the way most people aside from the rich live then you just don't understand. Have a good day :)

@@yochibambii I dont see many people getting off their asses and working hard at all, it is sad :( If if it's so bad then they can go work abroad, they dont, they prefer sitting in self inflicted "poverty" . They choose to live like this and blame someone else, the government, the gypsies, the EU... always someone else's fault. As you say, they can work abroad if there's really no opportunities in Bulgaria. Nothing is stopping these people from improving their living standards, but... they dont. Oh wait... they go to protests sometimes right?
@yochibambii
@yochibambii 3 жыл бұрын
@@albaniantruffles Who's blaming gypsies tho? What do they have in fault? I don't know what you see man, but I see that the majority of people go to work every day. At least that's what I see. So you're telling me people CHOOSE to be POOR ... No one is blaming the EU for this, this is the government's fault, don't know what EU have to do with this? And of course people go abroad because they don't have a choice. Some of them say they want to go back and work here but they can't get the same payment and opportunities. That's just the reality. What's a self inflicted poverty if your minimal wage can barely cover your taxes let alone anything else. Minimal wage in Romania - 446€, minimal wage in Portugal - 700€, minimal wage in Slovakia - 500€, minimal wage in Greece - 750€, and in Bulgaria - 286€. I mean I don't know if people really choose how much they wanna get paid then yes I will agree that it's self inflicted poverty. But that's not the case here. The government doesn't work for the interest of the country and the people of it but for the outside interests and most of the time the people receive nothing in return. The only thing the government does is get millions from eurofunds and steal them for YEARS without doing something for the country and lately even people outside can see the corruption that's causing the rottening of the country and it's embarassing but true. So gypsies, EU or whatever else have nothing in common with this. People have been protesting for 200+ days hoping the government to fall. The reason people last summer were chanting some well known names from the EU comission was because they have connections and ties to our prime minister who's known to be corrupt in any way possible and is known in probably the whole press in Europe as the "cowboy of Europe". Let's not forget the government's love for insulting their OWN people all the time. The whole Covid crisis here was a total MESS and little to no people received actual help from it, they only try to use the media that they buy to spread propaganda about how "generous" they are and how they are "helping" even tho there were cases of people saying again and again that they DIDN'T receive anything. The situation with the vaccines is also chaotic. So yes the government is at fault, that's why people want them down and will get rid of them eventually because they want to see young people with ideas and qualifications rule this country and work for it. Again, we'll see what happens with the elections soon.

Why are you asking to look inside peoples houses? Of course they won’t let you in, that’s their homes! How would you feel if I came in your house to look around?! What’s the point of this video?! It’s so bad! Bulgaria is an AMAZING country! DON’T SPREAD HATE!

Hey, Bulgarian here! And I'm a Varna native at that too. This is so funny, I haven't laughed so hard in a looong, long time. But this is how people live in the outskirts - it is so poor in most villages, they live a chill life and grow food or do farming (of sorts). They're friendly but private too and privacy is something to be respected throughout the country especially amongst the elderly, because of the amount of crime and there are also a lot of robberies either from the gypsies or from other villagers, that's why they behave the way they did (if it ain't as obvious as it looks). Of course this is not manifested in the media and if you don't contact a local that can speak basic English you'll have your hands full haha :D

this is pure gold. I haven't had such a good laugh in a long time. The miscommunication and assumption almost led things to Chudomirian(Bulgarian satiric writer ) dimensions. What a cigoinish situation :

lol, that's hilarious :) at one point the whole village knew that there is a German tourist, looking for a house, or land, to buy :) They had absolutely no idea Kurt just wanted to see and show his viewer the insides of a house. Otherwise people that live in villages are very hospitable and I'm sure someone would have let Kurt in.

@@GUITARTIME2024 I know... But in Bulgaria he introduced himself as German , because it was easier to tell it to people. And at one point the people from that village all thought that a German wanted to buy a house ... If someone saw him coming they were whispering : "oh, that's the German that wants to buy a house here"

Oh, Jeez..... :DDDDD it is tragicomedy to watch. I am lithuanian, but studied on Erasmus in Bulgaria before two years. When I remember my first month in Bulgaria, when I didn’t knew the basics of bulgarian language- the best thing that I get along very good with bulgarians who guided me to smaller towns of Bulgaria where people don’t speak english. It is very nice to go with natives and be sure that you understand something, and see a lot of interesting things, village people hospitality, otherwise, it would be very very tragicomical and uncomfortable, like in your situation😅. Bulgarians are VERY friendly people and this video not the best to represent that. Although- you are very brave, that you came to random bulgarian village with no fear of miscommunication because of language barriers :DD :)

Imagine you went into South Side Chicago or Camden, NJ going to people's doorsteps as a German tourist trying to check out how impoverished their life is. You may get shot. You're lucky this Bulgarian village is full of old people that can't do you any harm. Or imagine me as a tourist going to a random neighborhood in Cape Town asking people to get into their homes without a proper explanation why. I would get laughed at and sent on my way. This is not how you do things.

I find the mission of "getting into a home" here very weird and culturally insensitive. This is where people live, it's not an amusement park... Imagine a tourist coming to a small German village, snooping around and trying to get into people's house, someone probably would have called the Polizei...
