HP2 (PS2) is where all started for me. This racing game was stylish and well very detailed the fact that we had the optimal choice to change our racer to male and female they feel everything in the environment while driving and they had concept cars in the game they hadn’t released on the market yet, the tracks were very well designed and detailed for the shortcuts as well and they all had their own theme of environment, cops in this game were PERSISTENT in my opinion along with Most Wanted (‘05) they’re were the best in HP2 first cops to have nitrous, explosive barrels, roadblocks/spike strips, rockets for Christ Sake lol even the details when the car damage out. I don't know does it mentioned before, but nfs underground were made straight from the hp2 ps2 version for sure - everything is just so similar in terms of physics. Even car sounds are similar as hell, I think they were used ps2 samples as default. That's why everyone are loving hp2 ps2 so much😅

The end of the best era of NFS! What a brilliant game this was, on either the PC or the PS2, and imo one of the best titles in the series. I still have it on my PC and play it occasionally just for fun. And it IS fun! Sooo much fun! Later NFS games, or in fact the majority of modern racing games (or any games) lack that factor: fun and enjoyment and the simplicity of it all.

PS2 Hot Pursuit 2 was my first NFS. I finally started emulating and was fully expecting nostalgia to lie to me how good the game actually is but it doesn’t just hold up, it still slaps.

I remember this race where we are forced to use the cockpit view. It was mind blowing for me because that is the only race where cockpit view is available, at least on ps2 version

Nfs hp2 on the ps2 was the very first game I ever played when I was 4-5. I remember driving a lotus Elise on coastal parklands, knocking down every road sign on the side of the road. I went so slow that the cops didn’t even start a pursuit 😂

Favorite thing to do on the PS2 version is trick the cop AI to smash into a tree/rock or another cop off to the side of the road before it begins pursuit after you.

On the subject of gameplay vs graphics. It doesn't apply solely to racing. You mentioned Mario, but a great example is Dragon's Dogma. The graphics are okay, it is a dated title at this point. The story was... all over the place. It felt like I was in an MMO, no real attachment to named NPCs, side quests out the ass, quests didn't feel like there was any impact, and odd story flow. But, most all of it could be forgiven because the combat and general gameplay loop was so good. It still holds up today

Another "Recent" racing game I could say that has good physics and vehicle handling would be GRIP:Combat Racing. It ticked the same boxes for me the same way TRAILOUT did. I ended up just racing in passively while my opponents shot at one another. It just felt good to drive in. Another I'd say is Victory Heat Rally. Still in development but the demo is out there for anyone to play, it makes me want to play the final release version even more.

HP2 was my first nfs game and I loved it. Also I know mw2012 gets a lot of hate but it's one of my favorite games mainly because it was the second game I got introduced to koenigsegg right behind my first encounter with the brand in horizon 1.

I agree with the statement that Unbound was released to fail its had very little updates & new content since its release. When they do release something its never actually advertised anywhere on social media, really bad when you think about it.

Yeah, when I played the PS2 version, the PC version just felt so cheap. But I still have the PC version so. Sidenote: I noticed Kuru is in Hot Pursuit The Challenges. Enjoying it so far.

Imho, the PS2 version of HP2 really only had the different tracks other platforms of it didn't have going for it but besides that I thought the PC, Xbox n GameCube versions were better out of the 4 versions.

I played infinite hours of this game on GameCube, when the only trouble I had was doing homework.

I, for one, enjoy playing NFSU2 more than Playback, MW2012 and 2015. That should tell EA something, cuz I'm sure I'm not the only one that prefers gameplay over graphics.

What better in the PS version?

The driving feeling great is the exact reason why I still play Horizon 5 every single week. It's the absolute best feeling racing game on the market to me. The way the cars handle is soooo fucking dialed in on that game. Plus it's gorgeous and there is a metric shit ton of car variety.

The racing physics is superb. This game is one of the very best ever made. The only thing bad about it the one uncle kracker song, that's the worst part of the game 😂

Hot Pursuit 2 on console is the best of the best. Most Wanted was good but IMO this was the better game, and the soundtrack alone was just top tier.

Out of all of the NFS games I had on my PS2, HP2 was genuinely my favorite. Going break neck speed trying to evade the cops never got old.

My understanding of why they cheap out on handling is because you can't see handling in trailers. Not unless you have played tons of racing game. But the graphics? As long as they sell the game, who cares about if players complain about having banana handling? Most people won't be bothered to ask for a refund even if they can.

I was lucky to grow up with the ps2 version of the game, until not I got into pc. Tried out the pc version and my god I'm glad I had the ps2. Also played Monster Jam which i think is another fun ps2 game. Kinda dislike The Crew, never fully enjoyed Payback, same with Heat which i just see as a reskin of Payback, Unbound looks like shit...Been playing forza alot more compared to nfs.

You are thinking on so small of a scope Kuru... sure Heat did great for a modern NFS, but sadly that's not going to matter for EA. Here is my tinfoil take: axing of Ghost, choking out Unbound on marketing, then the recent shoving Criterion to Battlefield (AGAIN -.-") as well as releasing Grid Legends with no fanfare and right before Gran Turismo 7 were all one connected play. EA is not into competition, only market capture. Where they can Stockholm-syndrome an entire niche and force devs to BS deadlines and subpar products with still guaranteed sales... while extremely damaging in the long run, it's not like they care. Codies on F1 & Rally, sabotage anything else, so seemingly not the publisher backed out of the field but the devs F-d up and they merely made a 'reasonable response' NFS while getting back on track, still not as mainstream as Forza, so let's ice it for the current market. Despite it still being leagues above current forza as is IMO, but that's not what the consumer herds want. I've been worried about NFS since Hot Pursuit 2010 dropped... but now is the 1st time I actually care. It's not dead, but arguably even worse off.

Regarding the "racing for all" aspect and backing down on the competitive aspect of games, or in this context, racing games, I think every time the concern for selling the idea that you don't *need* to win shows up, it's never viewed from the right perspective. The last decade has been all in for competitive games, which led directly to a significant reduction of singleplayer experiences as competitive multiplayer was much more profitable and popular. Then comes the actual problem with these types of games and modes, which only encourage toxic behavior, pointless elitism, and hyper-fixation on "winning, winning at all costs, else life means nothing!!!", creating an absurdly hostile environment for anyone who just wants to have some fun. There absolutely was a place where fun could be had in competitive, but as far as I'm concerned, these times ended some 10yrs ago, before e-sports took the industry by storm and a lot of franchises got sacrificed in its name, where competition was still actually friendly and people weren't trying to eat each other for even the tiniest mistake, they were just doing ther best. It is true that competitive was never a one-size-fits-all, and by nature it never can hope to be, but at least back when the mindset was different, it used to be enjoyable and a lot more chill. These times are long gone now, without playing with a dedicated group of friends, you're better off not even trying to go there, it simply isn't worth living. This, mind you, is coming from someone who was *greatly invested* into multiplayer in his teenage years. But after the mindset and culture surrounding it changed, I effectively gave up on the genre entirely, and don't even want to hear about multiplayer of ANY kind anymore. It long stopped being fun, and got wholly replaced by a vicious shark pool featuring over-competitive players, gate-keepers, elitists, a hyper-fixation on ranking up and winning at any cost (even your own in extreme cases), and greedy cosmetics. So, as far as I'm concerned (and I am fully aware probably no-one will listen to the "worthless casual" of me), every time a company is brave enough to forsake the competitive side of things in a game that probably never even was designed for it, is something I applaud. There is a place and audience for these games, yes, absolutely - but I fail to see why everything has to be competitive nowadays (or hard, as that suffers from the same syndrome, for the most part), as if life itself depends on it, and there has to be so much segregation between players going on, which only brings negative results (boosting, multiple accounts, smurfing, excessive cheating, true obsession for ranking up, hyper-competitive and toxic behavior bleeding into co-op games, etc). When people will stop being so vicious and behave in a saner manner, that's when they will probably be fun again to experience, but as far as I'm concerned, no can do. And truly renouncing competitive games and multiplayer as a whole, only brought good things to me, there's so much I missed out on in my obsession it's insane to even think about the ordeal...

In what way? It was missing most features from the last 3 games.
