Always nice to see the smaller trees. Over the years I have grown many and lost many Shohin and Mame. One point not addressed in the video is the extra care and watering these take to be successful. The small pots are not forgiving to missed watering.

Hi Bjorn, thank you very much for sharing this interesting video about shohin trees. These little trees are beautiful but you have very careful about watering due to the small size of the pots. 👍👍👍👍

I use Japanese training pots as well. I like that they are a little deeper, so they have more space to grow and hold water, but they are not as deep as the regular terra cotta pots. So it's easier to transfer it to a bonsai pot after. Also they are super cheap to buy used at bonsai nurseries. They are also less pourus, because they are baked at a higher temperature. Because of this they suck up less water from the soil. I've tried pond baskets on my balcony, but because of higher winds and lots of direct sun I couldn't keep up with the watering. I don't have that problem with the Japanese training pots. And they look nice, when you use them on all your trees. A lot calmer and more uniform.

I have a mature Kousa in my front yard, my favorite tree of my ornamental trees, but after picking, thousands ond thousands of fruit, I have only ever found 6 seeds, and none were viable. I've been trying so hard for decades to try to grow a Kousa....gorgeous tree.....

I bet there's a persimmon tree nearby! There was a fruiting persimmon in my yard in Tennessee as a child, the nearest male plants were on the neighbors property down the road a good bit.

I have a Kousa stump I saved from a neighbor's curb, it's about 10"-12" dia. Ugly as heck. But it is alive and has a lot of potential. Maybe it will shine in 10 years! Also, I started collecting Kousa seeds last fall. There are about 20 seedlings from about 100-150 seeds this spring. Side note: you can eat the fruit, it tastes like strawberry/banana.

Beautiful! But shohin and especially mame bonsaï are not that easy to grow and to take care of. On the other hand: ideal when you don't have that much space... You might look for Lonicera Nitida and/or Potentilla to start with cause they are cheap, quite forgiving and strong. Nice video!
