Ian Hunter on Working with Jeff Beck, Taylor Hawkins, Jeff Tweedy, & Slash
Ian Hunter drops in to talk with Kyle Meredith about Defiance Part 1, the first in a two-part guest-heavy series. The Mott The Hoople singer tells us about starting the album during Covid and remotely involving artists such as Slash and Billy Gibbons since his own band wasn’t able to be in the studio together, as well as discussing how age and ageism play into being a rock musician, getting better at his craft as he gets older, and looking back to his school days and relationships with his father for inspiration in the songs. Hunter goes on to talk about working with Jeff Beck and Taylor Hawkins, both since passed away, having Jeff Tweedy play guitar, and which guests to expect on Part 2.

My all time hero. So hoping I get at least one more chance to see Ian live after seeing him literally dozens of times in various countries. Loving Defiance Part 1. Shout out also to Andy York. Probably my favorite songwriter ever. Todd Rundgren number 2. “Don’t Tread On Me” is a masterpiece. I’d love to know if the lyrics are correct on iTunes. I hear the first line as: “Ain’t life for heavy burden, when you can’t get a word in?” Can someone confirm ?

Whaddya mean "last" ??!! He's healthy and strong, got years to go. Although with his tinnitus, it'd have to be quiet, maybe unplugged. Maybe just him and a guitar and a piano. And a lot of stories. Now wouldn't that be a real treat?

Such a deep music library of great songs. I can listen to Spotify "This is Ian Hunter" with hours of music over and over and then fill gaps with individual Albums from both Amazon Music and Spotify. Looking for the missing tracks that doesn't get covered. Long term, I have almost all his & MOTs albums & CD. Seen him many times in NY area, all were special to me. Can't wait ti see him again in NY. Must get into the Hall-of-fame. Ian, although you said you don't like Over-Night-Angle. It is a great rocking song.

Ian you crack me up.... thank you for putting up with interviewers (this one not too bad) im 12 minutes in and its getting good now because of radio Luxembourg and Jerry Lee Lewis and a loner from a little country town.... retired now and making some time for "president" and "bed of roses" and "Pavlovs Dog" - thank you for so much great music, the last cd i bought was "Y-U-I-ORTA", and I was totally blown away, a real rocker, everything and then some, I could go on and on, the live LP with the medley finish, the way yall honored Buff and got him in the gig and playing "mott" and "the hoople" LP cuts like "the ballad of" and "marianette" and so many others.... ok im ramblin on, the ibuprofens starting to take effect, hope there are more upsides than downsides for you and your mates, cheers from NE FLA Jacksonville.

i saw the Ian Hunter Band with Mick Ronson ( late '81; MR had a new short hair cut at this concert which seemed to fit him!)at the now defunct Wolf & Rissmiller's Country Club in Reseda CA(my childhood residence)...ʕ´•ᴥ•`ʔ ᶠᵘⁿ ᶠᵃᶜᵗ!🌳🌲🌴

It's funny Ian has been much more successful than Warren Zevon. They are very much alike, the UK and US versions of each other. I love them both very much, Ian Hunter's BOY is my all-time favorite song.

Very good comment! Ian perhaps less cynical/acerbic than WZ but there are similarities. Mott's bassist Overend was a huge WZ fan and turned me on to him back in the day!
