Excellent video for someone like me that's always had an interest in doing something like this. I bought a 3 foot bear 12 years ago that had been carved and still have it to this day. I've been wanting to some to the family but wanted to do it myself. Thanks for the tutorial, it's pretty simple to follow for newbies like me...

Great Video Kyle, I've been wanting to try to do this for years actually but I've never known anyone that has done it although I had seen people leave tall stumps in there yard and some had came and carved then. I always thought that was so cool. I run a chainsaw every day, 7 days a week I work for myself doing tree trimming and removal, and over the years iv had a few trees that the people asked me about how to go a out getting a carving ..lol well today you can find someone doing it fairly quick thanks to Google but not so long ago it wasn't quite that simple , and then you add to the fact that I'm 52 and getting the basics on these phones and all down was a challenge in itself to be quite honest. I'm not dumb , stupid , or ignorant by no means. I'm just a country boy that almost missed the technology boat by a mile but I was able to get ahold of a tie down rope and hang on for alil bit lo.l Anyway I've ran my saws long enough I have a real feel for what your saying ( teaching) on your video, Which by the way I think you done an outstanding job on.. 👍 I have carved a a few smaller things that turned out decent, but in all of those things I just kinda got lost and I've always thought" man if I just had a lil bit of guidance, I might actually get really good at this, and like I said I'm 52, I don't get around in the trees like I'm 25 anymore. I'd really like to try to take this hobby to another level( a personal Level of course ) carve these for a living.. lol I know you are sitting there more than likely about to fall out of your chair laughing at that and believe me I know how it sounds andi I don't blame you a bit..But I am very serious. I'm going to begin tomorrow to try and follow your step by step to get my angles down and try to figure out how to see it I my head no matter what it is . My question to you is would you mind if I was to ask you a question from time to time as I'm trying to learn? I understand i might not be as good or as talented as you or s alot of these peolple that are on here are I'll never know if I don't give it a shot and see. Great Video bud

I say that to say this, a coworker saw it after all of this time and wants to buy him. I'm currently using your technique with sawdust/glue mix to fill in the cracks that have formed. I'm gonna give him a makeover with sanding sealant, some airbrush work, and polyurethane. I'll be sure to post pics to your Facebook page when I'm done. Hey man just want to say great work! I watch a lot of your videos and some of them I watch a 3 or 4 times. I love the emphasis on safety and I like the reviews on saws. I've been considering battery saws but I have 1/4" drive carving bars that aren't compatible with 3/8 sprockets that seem common on battery saws.

Really depends on the saw . I would double check me but I believe the Stihl Msa 160 and MSA 200 run 1/4 pitch also the MSA 120 and 140 . Again I’d double check

@@KyleHallwoodworker I'm worried about kickback! My brother was showing me how the saw jumped up at his face, he didn't have time to react. Went right thro his face shield. His stihl saw has chainbreak and antikickback features so I guess it don't always engage. I knew about kickback before, but it's got me worried now that he was telling me how sometimes you can't fight the power tool and how quick it can happen. He worked at uncles sawmill so he knows how t use a chainsaw. I looked for a video about kickback from you but didn't see one. Only about that wheel of death. Thought it might be a good video for beginner carvers!

Nice Video. Would like to add that the Ms170 has Problems with the Heat from the Catalysator (melts through the oil tank) and it's carb isn't adjustable on most models. I think for beginners a Stihl Msa140 is a good fit, since the chain and bar are better for carving. Also a electric chainsaw might be easier to usw than a gas powered one.

How green/seasoned is the wood you're carving? Is it better for it to be wetter or drier, or somewhere in the middle?
@KyleHallwoodworker
@KyleHallwoodworker Жыл бұрын
Sometimes very green . If I can the log will sit a year then I will carve it . Even with that the wood is still wet .

I know this is a “starter” video… which I’m definitely a starter to wood carving. But I own a landscaping company, and also do some tree work. With that said, I’m not new to chain saws. Do you think a top handle saw would be better to start with? My top handle is much lighter than a 170. I do have a 170 I use on a rare occasion. But it is VERY under powered I think
@KyleHallwoodworker
@KyleHallwoodworker 2 жыл бұрын
The only thing I have heard with the top handle saw is the control aspect. In my opinion you have more control over a rear handle saw . Especially when carving. I agree the 170 is an under powered saw but it’s just a starter . It’s a way for someone who wants to carve but can not spend a lot . The 170 works nice as a detail saw. But if I could spend the cash I would probably just jump to the already set up 200 with a dime tip bar for detail work only . I like to use my 250 and 271 for blocking

Hello, I have a question I am a beginner just started making pumpkins and little things. I live in Atlantic Canada and was wonder what would be better a soft wood or hard? Thank you
@KyleHallwoodworker

I prefer soft wood . Less sharpening the chain and the saws don’t have to work as hard . Also it carves faster in my opinion

Do you prefer a semi chisel or full chisel chain on your stock bars for carving?
@KyleHallwoodworker
@KyleHallwoodworker 2 жыл бұрын
I run all stihl chains. I believe the yellow chain is full chisel which I run on my bigger saws . I run the green chain which I believe is semi on my smaller saws . The yellow cuts faster great for blocking the green cuts slower nice for detail work in my opinion.

Apologies if I missed something obvious…but how should the wood be attached to the base? Some kind of spike system/setup? Also, my Stihl is a 251C…is that really too large for beginning carving? And what about some of the smaller battery-powered Stihls…worth a look for carving duty? Thanks so much!
@KyleHallwoodworker
@KyleHallwoodworker 2 жыл бұрын
If your confident in handling the 251 then use it . I have used mine for blocking . I think the smaller Stihl battery saws would be good for detail work . I run the AP series battery saws by Stihl .

Sometimes it will fix it’s self if it sets all the way out of the weather . Otherwise have to sand and re do it

If need a saw for work and want one for carving you may want two . But an Ms 250 is a well rounded and gives you the ability to swap sprocket sizes and different bars and chains .

eBay is the way to go. Last week, 2 of 3 items to convert my 170, were out of stock. The 800# Stihl has, actually put me through to tech, they gave me the item#'s, then I got em off eBay. LoL.

Hey Kyle I gotta ask. I live in upstate NY as well in a neighborhood like you. Do the neighbors give you a hard time with all the noise? I am thinking about electric saws for that reason but I would just rather go with gas. I dont want to get the expensive battery saws with limited run time so I was thinking about the Stihl corded saw for detail work. Do you think the corded saw can do what you are doing in this video? What are your thoughts on this. Thanks for any suggestions and opinions !!
@KyleHallwoodworker
@KyleHallwoodworker 2 жыл бұрын
Honestly I know they do not like the gas so that’s why I spent the money on battery saws . I started with gas first because they are more affordable. No if I’m carving at my place and need to do a bigger carving I block out with gas and finish with battery
