Welcome to another lightsaber duel analysis. This one focuses on Kylo Ren verse Rey on Starkiller Base. In my opinion, this was a pretty solid duel for the entry of the Star Wars Sequel Trilogy. Its scrappy and very similar in my head to the original trilogy. There is much less flash in this flight than the prequels and that makes sense considering the Jedi Knights were in their prime in the PT. Luke Skywalker never had decades of formal saber combat training. However, this doesnt mean that these duels do not possess skill or potential. Either way, this is my deep dive and analysis on one of my favorite scenes from The Force Awakens.

Early in the film, Kylo Ren stops a blast mid air after killing a man. Late in the film, Kylo Ren doesn't see the shot coming after killing a man. It is called visual storytelling. Kylo was umbalanced.

I love that this duel takes place in the snow, but the best part is when Rey straight up slashes Kylo's face... The look of shock Kylo has is undeniable. @fantasticmoose both were meant to be the new Vader in terms of impact and it's Thanos who succeeded, and he's not a warlord, he's a man with motivations who grows and removes more pieces of armor as the story progresses and we get to see him show signs of weakness and humanity like how he cried when he killed Gamora, he didn't even threaten the heroes, he just did what he had to do, tried to make them empathize with him, he didn't even attack Dr Strange, but when a fight comes, he becomes the galaxy's big monster, he actually did get slightly defeated on Titan with even Spiderman, the most "human kid" out of all Avengers almost taking out the gauntlet but the movie ends with Thanos still being an imposing threat that scares our heroes who failed, Kylo on the other hand wasn't built up like that, there are no stakes for our heroes, Rey beat him and we know she'll eventually do it again, this is the generic villain will eventually lose story therefore it would've been more beneficial if Ben realized after Han's death that the dark side isn't the right path for him and then stuff in the story happen that culminate in his redemption halfway through the trilogy while Rey is seduced to the dark side prematurely and at the final fight we don't know who will survive or who will be in which stance in the Force, this creates more stakes than what we got, we don't even dive into Ben's motivations to understand his failure, right now we just see him as a failure, Rian did nothing with the risk that JJ took by making Rey beat Kylo, all we got was Snoke bullying Kylo

@@darthtroller Ben isn't the new Vader, the point of his character is that he's the anti Vader or anti Anakin. When Anakin turned to the Dark side he was completely able to kill that old part of himself and become Darth Vader without any conflict or morals (other than his change of heart at the last 5 min. of his life.) Now Ben is someone who wants very much to be Vader, so he wears a mask to hide his true self and try to be like his grandfather. But no matter what he does he's unable to escape the pull to the light, the conflict, or let go of being Ben Solo. That's literally the point of his character.

I don't think Rey's staff experience really works in her favour in this fight. On defence, maybe. But for the majority of the duel, she keeps trying to stab or jab at Kylo. It's exactly how she'd fight with a staff, but she doesn't have the length of a staff to work with. She doesn't have any leverage. Kylo just keeps batting her attacks aside and taking the initiative back from her. It's not until she closes her eyes and focuses that she starts to slash and chop with the saber and starts getting the upper hand. She had to unlearn what she'd learned. It's important to consider the Yin-Yang, and what it means. It's not about the separation of dark and light. It's about the movement of dark and light, how both of them have a dot of the other inside them, how both of them have the seed of change inside them, to become their opposite. Light needs a little of the dark, its drive and focus, to become effective. And Dark needs a little of the light, its order and clarity, to remain coherent, and because of that, nothing's ever truly one thing or the other.

Saying that her experience with her staff makes her good at fighting with a light saber is bull shit, even a double bladed light saber is nothing like a staff, (Because you can only hold the middle of course) but you have to agree that it would have made her stronger.

Springboarding off this, there is also the thought that the Force is sentient in a way, and the theory is that it craves balance, which is another reason it allowed Rey to be able to fight off Kylo. They were always meant to be equal opposites, which is supported a little bit by Snoke's statement about his apprentice having an equal in the light rise up to meet him. No way to know the exact truth, but an interesting consideration.

Look Im not callin no one out, but the number of people who have had their opinions changed is encouraging, but also disconcerting. We gotta be more thoughtful viewers. None of this stuff was hidden per se, it’s all there for anyone to see. A lot of us watch these movies and go online and are sort of indoctrinated by groupthink. We’re sort of told how to feel. We all gotta learn how to be more thoughtful and discerning viewers and not depend on the filmmakers or people online to tell us how to feel Obviously not everyone studied film or even cares to read between the lines, but this mans analysis should be evidence enough to convey the importance that every detail has in telling an unspoken story. Anyone who is saying the duels in the sequel trilogy aren’t as epic as the prequels and they suck because of that, are missing the point. Something I love in The Force Awakens is the use of a running gag to naturally hide a set up. Chewies Bowcaster and how it completely blows away enemies is all in service of the moment Kylo is shot with it. It's A. a testament to Kylo and his power to withstand it and B. One gripe I have is that most people seem to think Kylo Ren is some what of an inexperienced duelist and force user. I think there is skill and technique to his lightsaber dueling. It’s very heavy handed and throws people off balance, like you said. Which I think matches his particular lightsaber perfectly. Not to mention there are a few TFA visual guides that state that he is exceptional with his lightsaber skills and a threat on the battlefield. His force feats are no joke either. I believe force freezing wasn’t ever shown before him, and his mind probing is insane, doing it to highly trained individuals such as Poe, and Del Meeko. I believe he’s also around 30 years old too. Being trained up until around his teens by Luke, and then by Snoke up until now. But I love your lightsaber analysis so far and really appreciate you shedding some good light on these duels! Keep up the good work!

AT-AT Chat I wouldn’t even say he’s a novice compared to obi wan. According to the official guides he should be very much on his level. You might be unfairly comparing the choreography between the films. Each trilogy has a different way of showing their duels. By your logic TPM obi wan is leagues beyond a new hope obiwan in saber skill just simply by the way the duels appeared, which isn’t true at all. As well as saying Luke skywalker himself is a novice when he held his own with Darth Vader, arguably one of the most gifted duelist in the history of Star Wars. Love your video though. I like how you pointed out that Kylo is extremely frustrated during this battle. Besides his injuries, I think that’s the best defense against the dumb “Mary Sue” argument. Anyone who has ever played a sport or video game knows the moment you get frustrated, you lose your focus, and anybody can beat you. And that frustration is so central to Kylo’s character, frustration is so based on a fear of losing and being lesser. I’m glad someone mentioned it.

gaming Addict Except I wouldn’t consider a Kylo an all state wrestler at all. He trained himself. Dudes probably never had a real lightsaber battle in his life, let’s be real. I think people forget about the pure lack of lightsaber training Kylo has. Since he left Luke, he’s got nobody to train and hone his skills with, how’s he supposed to improve his skills and be any good fighting against someone else with a lightsaber when he probably hasn’t done that since he’s a kid. Whereas Rey has clearly shown she does physical staff combat on Jakku, she clearly has had prior experience fighting someone. Combine that with getting shot, hit with his a lightsaber by Finn, and being frustrated, it’s not unreasonable he lost at all.

@Inheritor_Ghost I don't find her op at all. Also correct me if I'm wrong, but Ben was sent to Luke to train at a later time in his life according to the novelizations. He really is just a newbie as much as Rey. On top of that, I honestly don't see how Luke was trained in using a lightsaber. In the swamp with yoda, I only remember him training with the force, but never a lightsaber, yet he was able to best Darth Vader? I mean sure his character does go through more training, but until Ep. 9 comes out, you can't declare her an underdeveloped character. If she does indeed have some magical power, she can't be classified as "underdeveloped." If no explanation is apparent, i'd agree with you here.

I love your breakdown of these lightsaber duels. For those of us who like to focus on the relationship of Kylo and Rey this duel is incredibly important. As someone who appeared captivated by “the girl” from the moment he saw her, we like to point out the expression on Kylo’s face the moment Rey pulls the lightsaber, as the “marry me” face. And while I do think there is a large factor of wonder at that moment, I recently read a comment that had me rethinking this a bit. What I read was how Rey pulling the saber to her over Kylo confirmed all his worst fears about himself. How he would never live up to his grandfather’s legacy. And I guess this should be pretty obvious, but can be overlooked from the Reylo aspect of it all. This feels like the lowest moment for Kylo psychologically in the trilogy to me. And mean that primarily from the aspect of having just killed his father. The rest of this coming on the heels of, or because of that act. And yet, his interest with Rey is undeniable. Regardless of whether he would have been able to defeat her, he definitely could have ended her at that moment of pause on the edge of the cliff. The more info we get about TROS, the more excited I am to see how everything will play out in the end between these two.

I honestly think you are doing a groundlaying work for the sequels. Some ten years from now new people will still be watching this trilogy and from a holed up, non-prejudiced perspective will be the most fair judges so far. To get under the surface of the scene not everyone will waste few hours upon hours of rewatching. Thank you for the work! No matter what reactions the plot induced, visually fight was a masterpiece.

@9752matt i like how you use big words, but everytime you try to write something extra, you sound dumb. You begin with a comment about visuals. And this is the thing you avoid to talk about. Let me guess: You don't know "crap" about cinematography nor photography nor editing (as the guy making this this video does) and want to sound as if you do. Nobody ever used the force with their lives until someone told them "use the force". And yours is not criticism, you think it is somehow. A fantasy epic about characters discovering they have powers by using them:you keep repeating something with an ugly face, but it doesn't make it ugly. And if you cannot understand something as basic as a character having the pressure of not being capable of taking someone else's spiritual mantle, then these stories aren't for you, maybe nothing is for you. I really can't believe that when you heard the words "as strong as darth vader" you only understood it as a literal assessment. So You didn't understand that Rey wanted to scare him away with what he fears the most, and what he fears the most is that he won't able to represent what Vader does to history.

The whole "I never understood why people hated the sequels" shit. Its frustrating people don't have the foresight for this, and I feel like there is a lot of hypocrisy going on here. Some people don’t remember that Kylo was specifically asked by Snoke to bring Rey alive to him so that they could find the map to Skywalker in her mind. “If what you say about this girl is true, bring her to me”. As someone who had the pleasure of studying film for the past few years at my university, these are the kind of fight scene analysis videos I always wanted to find on KZfaq, but never did. When I first watched The Force Awakens, the moment that really confirmed for me 'yes I am watching Star Wars' was when Rey pulled the lightsaber out of the snow. The fact that she earlier rejected it, but then when it came down to it she accepted what was being presented to her with the binary sunset music to boot, I knew she was our new hero and I indeed was watching Star Wars again on the big screen. Lovely analysis again man, I look forward to the next one.

Nice job explaining the sword fight and Rey and Kylo's abilities with the sabers. Loved your analysis of when the two of them were holding both sabers together. I also believe this battle was testing Rey's character and she passed the test. Symbolically in literature, forests are a place of testing for a character, as forests are linked to natural laws of survival, not to civilization and man-made laws. When Kylo is down and Rey hears the voice in her head telling her to kill him, in Alan Dean Foster's The Force Awakens novel on page 292, it states: "She recoiled from it. From the dark side." This I believe is Rey passing a test. She may have utilized the dark side to beat Kylo down, but when given the opportunity to join it she did not give in to it and finish off Kylo, which she could have done with no witnesses to testify that she did so. In the novel, it is after she recoils from the dark side that the chasm between them opens to separate them physically as well as psychologically, which contrasts their characters, as Ben Solo did not recoil from the dark side when it presented him the opportunity to join. I am looking forward to seeing if Rey is once again tempted to join the dark side in TROS, will she successfully recoil from the dark side on her own, or will someone have to pull her back to the light? As of this post, 20 days to Dec. 19th's showing!

Inheritor_Ghost that makes no sense, it’s been established throughout Star Wars that any Force user, trained or untrained, can tap into the dark side, it has nothing to do with even knowing what it is. It’s not like she thought “hey, I’ll use the dark side to gain an advantage”. She was just angry and wanted to kill him and unknowingly taped into the dark side.

I also never understood how people didn't get that Rey also tapped into Ben's skill. He was distracted by that among his other issues (being wounded and emotionally unstable). TLJ showed how she definitely tapped into and adapted his fighting style to hers. TROS showed that Rey couldn't take on a fully powerful Ben in battle because he almost took her out (or kept putting her on her ass); he's a battle warrior, after all. I loved that you mentioned how they are both really under-trained the way Jedi/Sith of old were. And I also picked up how Ben is a brawler/melee fighter. He uses the force, but he also will land a punch.

1:20 I get that this is supposed to be a joke, but lets be honest here. You can't use Yoda being a muppet to diminish the fact that story wise Luke learned how to refine his force use from the GRANDMASTERS of jedi and Obi wan, master of form 3. Also the "Floating ball" was used to train jedi younglings in form 3(Even a youngling can fight off Trained clone troopers), a defensive passive form and that form is one Obi-wan is skilled in. If you think the design of the fights after the prequels affects the combat how do you explain darth vader who was the best of his class in his youth at saber fighting fighting sloppily in the originals? The truth is that it's just a old movie that had not put that into consideration before. Luke taught a school what he knew from form 3 that kylo was apart of and not only learned from him, but also the ways of the darkside when he left, he should definitely be better than Rey when it comes to saber combat considering she had NO knowledge. The reason that Kylo and Rey look like amateurs is because fight choreographer was directed by someone who didn't understand how to structure Kylo's skill visibly and wanted Rey to win. The movie is not well structured.

Some of your points are deduced from a lack of information and interpretations which you can't depict as truth because it's uncertain without the skill in writing to make it clear. Nice video though.

I really wish they would have let JJ keep all of his footage that would have balanced the exposition in TROS. And, speaking of that voice in her head, the clash shot is followed by a replication of dooku vs. Anakin, the overhead slashes, the twirl after Kylo draws away, even Rey's close-up is similar to Anakin vs obi wan: and then of course in both cases you have, "kill him, kill him now". I bring that last part up because there's actually a LOT more detail in the films that hints towards a bigger story going on that actually still works given the events of TROS and the corresponding novel. Rey isn't who she seems.

Such a great analysis! The prequels adjusted people's expectations of lightsaber battles to judge them on their technical merits where JJ (and Rian Johnson) seem more interested in the way the fight pushes the story forward. For TROS, I'm much more excited to see how Rey and Kylo's connection is developed upon than how their duel stacks up against TPM's technically.

This series is one of my new favourites on KZfaq. Meshing the love of cinematography, choreography and the deep mythology of star wars and making me fall in love with these films all over again.

Well, you did help change my mind. The throne room scene might be a much harder thing because that was down to more stunt related things but good job!

Thank you for your analysis. I love your videos! As many times as I have seen this duel, analyzed it and have heard others analysis on it, yours still brought about new perspective which is fantastic. This fight had so many nods back to other duels specifically the Anakin/Obi Wan duel on Mustafar (which is consequently why I subscribed to Rey being a Kenobi for so long)

Another brilliant video AT-AT! You’ve got a new subscriber. I was intrigued by what you said about the PT. I’m 21 years old, which means the Star Wars of my generation was episodes 1-3. I never had an issue with the lightsaber duels, and then as I got older I learned that people thought they were overdone, too choreographed, etc. But now I appreciate them even *more* . Because it shows what the Jedi were actually like at their prime, when they _were_ trained from childhood and all that. And I think (although it could’ve been cut down in some segments) the final duel between Obi Wan and Anakin is a stellar example of fusion between the old and new. There’s the technique and mastery and flourish of two incredibly powerful martial artists and force users with the emotion of two brothers who realize neither one of them can leave until the other is dead. I’m detecting you have a preference against them but I really hope you get to some of the duels from the PT because I think there’s a lot to be said for some of them - specifically Anakin v Kenobi and Kenobi/Jinn v Maul.

I really want to like the sequels, but the hatred from so many fans makes it very difficult to just like them, it feels wrong, but on the other hand the prequels got hated just as much or even more and still now everybody likes them. Videos like this make me forget about the hatred and just enjoy the movies more. Thank you sir, for this rare positivity regarding Star Wars movies :)
