Pro tip: instead of "Portal" on the map, put down the portal code in case you forget.

A tip: The Stagbreaker / Iron Sledge is your best friend in the swamps. 1.) If you're playing in co-op, fighting crowds of mobs with the two-handed hammer while another player is blocking and aggro-ing them is a great way to take them down relatively easily and safely. You can even take down the spawners alongside the mobs out in the open. If you're alone and feeling like a tank it works too. It helps that many mobs in the swamp are weak to blunt damage (Blobs, Ooze, Skeletons, and the boss himself) 2.) Two-handed hammers can also take down leeches while you're on land. In fact, you don't even have to go down into the water and the AOE will do its job. Just be wary of your surroundings and don't let some other mob take a cheap shot at your back. Remember that these big hammers take time to swing. 3.) You'll find that crypts are actually the safest place in the swamp. Just like in the video, just mine partially into the scrap so that they act as obstruction for potential mobs in the next room. You don't even have to peek into the room; when you're sufficiently close enough (with the scrap still blocking of course) just swing the hammer. You essentially have a free shield while dishing out AOE damage with stamina as your only currency. It will obliterate spawners, draugrs and blobs alike without you yourself even needing to see them. Just watch numbers and health bars disappear and you're good to proceed. In fact, your only drawback is that the weapon mercilessly destroys everything within range, including the green torches giving you extra light. There's only three things to take note of: a.) If blobs notice you before you attack, their poison CAN pass through the scrap, so watch out. b.) If there's a big enough gap in the scrap, Draugr Archers STILL CAN hit you, so watch out. c.) There's always a possibility that there are mobs outside the range of your hammer's big AOE, so I always go in with my shield up just in case I get aimed at. Good luck, have fun!

I have a dedicated iron portal on top of the crypts and move it around when I've cleared them, much handier for pickaxe repair and transporting non-metals back. Also for your first swamp take enough copper to build a forge with you, then you can make iron nails to take a much larger haul back to base on your first sail home as you will be able to craft the Longship..

You can set portals on top of the crypts. Add a chest and a 1x1 floor on the back wall so you can jump up and it's easy to go back and forth to your base while clearing them.

I like using the hoe to raise paths through the swamps. helps you find the way back out faster. avoid the leeches and section them off into smaller puddles so they can't escape.

When digging through the muddy scrap piles, remember to check the ground thoroughly as there is more scrap pile in the water on the ground and also the edges of the walls that are hard to spot

if you are mining chitin on a leviathan and it starts to sink and you still havent mined all of it, you can log out and log back in and the leviathan will reset

I'd ditch the Fire arrows for Swamp. Fire is effective against Wraiths and remains effective against Skellies, as in other biomes. But Draugr, Blobs and Oozers are all resistant to Fire, and Leeches and Surtlings are immune. Fire also loses effect against anything that is Wet. I do Fire arrows in Black Forest then switch to Flinthead in Swamp. Although I would switch back to Fire for the odd Wraith I encounter. For portal placement, I like plonking one down on the roof of a Sunken Crypt. Build a Workbench nearby, attach a wood staircase or ladder to the back (lower) end of the Crypt building, and you can get onto the roof but monsters can't. The roof is flat although stepped so placing a portal and even some chests is easy. The advantage is that monsters don't attack the portal on the roof so it's not necessary to build a protective fence around it. Another advantage is that if you portal in and there are nasties nearby, you can snipe them with the bow from the safety of the roof. Only Wraiths and archers can reach you up there.

Aww, the poor boar! I went around to sturdy up my pens and made the fences with the 26` roof crosses, so far so good and it's probably been a couple of in-game months. The wraith are so creepy! Of course my first run in couldn't have been while my friends and I were exploring the swamps on their server, nooooo, it was out of nowhere in my solo world. Literally screamed out loud, lol. >.< Tyfs! Working on getting into my crypts, but my base isn't ready to deal with the next level of events yet. I think I need a moat. XD

I took fire arrows on my recent playthrough to swap but quickly changed my mind after remembering that it's always wet. You won't get the tick unless in a crypt. Also with a finewood bow you will one or two shot a lot of (non elite) enemies if you get sneak attack so higher base DMG on arrows is probably preferred. Personally I make freeze pots and go grab a couple hundred obsidian and skip to those. Or I'll just make do with wood/flint until I get to the mountain and use any higher grade arrows I find in crypt chests.

We are playing this run-through with a rule of no portals. If you are looking to change up the game, having no portals really makes the game come alive!

First pick axe is what I use through the swamp. You can repair it on the go fairly easy with a covered crafting table

2 things; The antler pickaxe is all you need for Muddy Scrap Piles and that can be repaired at a regular workstation. so build a workstation and a portal on the crypt you're at.

My first maps starter island has 6 mountains, 2 plains and a swamp. It's massive and the trader is on the starter island too. A bunch of black forest and good meadows locations everywhere. There's a great swamp on the island but an even better one a short ride away right next to it and a meadows. I couldn't have gotten luckier, only thing is Elder is on a different island. My base is in a meadows with swamp on one side, a big flat black forest with trader on the other with a mountain, and a swamp/plains across the river.

You can build atop the crypts, my Bomemass portal is in such a spot. Fortunately it also has 2 surtling spawners nearby.

The Root Armor is the way to in the swamps, especially at level 4. I go to the swamps at night just to kick some butt and empty out all the Crypts. Just loaded my ship with around 500 raw Iron and made a long trip back to Base.

Thanks for this guide- I'm really enjoying this game. Just did my first crypt - only 19 scrap iron :-( - and am really benefitting from your tips. I have an amazing location for the portal near the swamp and am actually probably gonig to make a real base there. It's by the water in meadows but I have swamp, black forest, mountains *and* plains nearby (but not too nearby in the case of swamp and plains). There's just the small matter of a draugr village to clear out to secure the ideal location. Gonna wait to get geared up before I attempt that.

First time playing the game, first island I find (after my starting one) had Black Forest next to Meadows which is next to Swamp as in a row, next to them have Mountain and Planes lol...

personally i only recommend using the eikthyr special when you need it. it doesnt last long, but its plenty long if you get into trouble and need to escape. plus if oyu raid crypts and dont use it, you can sprint back to your portal faster

If I find any surtling spawner near a crypt I always make a small base above the crypt with a portal. Due to it's stone surface you can easily drop also a campfire there setup a bed and chests. Good spot to idle and get coal and cores while being cooking in the kitchen^^ If you raise the ground around the crypt it's totally safe against any sort of event beside drakes. Second time the boars got wiped? That's the really good reason why a trench around the entire used stuff is the first thing I do every time. One troll event while not paying attention and the base is done. It might not be the funniest things to do in Valheim but it saves a lot of nerve wrecking moments.

I used to feel safe in the entrance area of the Crypts but after being jumpscared by blobs... XD. The Stagbreaker is a great tool to beat Blobs, leeches and the AoE can bypass walls and help you clear a room before even mining your entrance in! :)

I don't know how you run around in the swamp at night. I see the sun setting, I gun it.

I am finally starting to tame the swamp; but it has taken what feels like the better part of two weeks. Things I've learned, though. \- Get a tower shield (there is no bronze tier tower AFAIK, so you will need to rely on the wood until you get iron) and a mace. FireSpark81 put up a video demonstrating that the mace is the overall most versatile weapon class in the game. I have a level 2 iron mace now, and I can kill regular Draugr in about three hits. \- Get iron armour ASAP. Trollhide is enough as long as you keep your shield up, but if you ever miss a block, Draugr can one shot you. Iron will let you survive those hits which sometimes make it through. \- Slimes are priority targets. Kill them first, before anything else. You can die of poison even if nothing else is hitting you, but generally speaking, something else will be. It is possible to kill slimes before they get their poison attack off, but you have to move quickly. \- Draugr spawners produce two mobs at a time. They rely on you focusing on the mobs, and then new ones spawn as soon as you've killed the last one, and eventually you get exhausted and overrun. You need to block the attacks from the two Draugr that are currently up, destroy the spawner first, and then just kill those two. \- Make sure you have both a 6-8 node beehive and a boar and carrot farm. Balance your boar meat between boar jerky and mince meat sauce. \- Stay out of the water. Follow the terrain, and stay on dry land. Swimming slows you down, prevents you from using your weapons, and makes you vulnerable to leech attacks. \- I consider Wraiths one of the most dangerous mobs in this game. DO NOT be out at night, unless you want to experience a rapid and terrifying death.

If you're lucky, you can find scrap iron in the swamp outside of the crypt, using the stag breaker, if the stag breaker hits a tree, it will say too hard, if it hits stone, it show grey 0, meaning it hit a node of muddy scrape iron, a rare but useful spawn, pluse the stag breaker is useful for dealing with groups of drauger and/or skeletons

Took me a long time to find turnip in the swamp aswell, when i finally saw some i ran over and jumped to it. As soon as i picked it an abominatoion came out of the ground right next to me 😂

easiest way to farm leeches is to use siege breaker or later the iron hammer, the AOE effect is amazing and few good thumps squishes the leeches, no hassle or arrows needed, and relatively early you get accuse to the siege breaker it is usefull to have

And the Hoe is one of the best tools you can take into the Swamp you can raise ground to make pathways all through swamps which helps keep you out of water. I use fire arrows and a sword mostly. have very little problem in the swamps and I carry flint arrows as well if needed and a good shield, I save my poison resist for the Bonemass fight. I hardly ever see a wraith, for me they are very very rare though easy to kill with a few fire arrows. Never leave your ship parked around a swamp area Leeches, skelly's and draguar will attack it and destroy it. I always just destroy my ship and collect the parts to rebuild when i need it. And you can get on top of the Crypts and leave a portal there, haven't had a problem with it being damaged yet and makes it easy to get to. You can run and jump up onto the crypts to get to your portal. I also make a storage chest to keep things so i don't get overweight and can carry more from the crypts. Poison resist is handy in the crypts due to sometimes having a lot of blobs in them.

If you parry any melee mob, its worth doing the uppercut attack with the mace, it does huge damage to a stunned target. Sometimes it will even stagger them a second time.

An upgraded staghammer is actually also very good against blobs and oozers, blunt damage, but from a distance

Actually.... I'd say sail straight to the swamp, find a crypt, build portal on top of the crypt. Noone will attack it! A workbench on the back side of the crypt will make it easier to go on top of the crypt. Also since items don't despawn, it doesn't matter if someone destroys the workbench

Literally the third thing we encountered on our first visit to the swamp was a 2-star Draugr archer. Couldn't believe it.

I'm at the point in the game where I have to go there (I killed the elder and got the key) I've already lost 2 gear sets and had to go back to copper mining to re-kit again so I'm very apprehensive about losing a third set to the swamp. I got caught by 2 wolves in the mountains while exploring and used literally every resource I had building a path with fence posts either side going all of the way from my base camp up the mountain to my death point. After successfully getting there I was wiped out by the ice dragon thing and it appeared at my portal and killed me every time I jumped back. I gave up on that. The second time was at the edge of the swamp while in my boat. I jumped out of it to chop down an ancient tree and was quickly set upon by a load of skeletons. I couldn't fight them because my weapons were deselected with being in the water. I built a land bridge with posts either side and used every resource I had to do it. I fell off the bridge while extending it and was set upon by angry leaches and lost my kit again. I managed to finish the land bridge to my death point in the swamp and recovered my kit (a monumental task) Maybe I'm just bad at playing it but I love it anyway.This guide is just what I need. I've died so many times, my skills are depleted to near zero.

Instead of building protection around the swamp portal I just threw it on top of a crypt structure. You have to have a pretty decent jump though. Also you can lure mobs to a crypt and jump on it and kill them safely with the bow.

Portal's swamps, I get the idea for the initial search of the swamp, is great to set up the swamp portal, but after that, I would say just build a portal on the roof of the crypt and it is even better. OK, to be 100% honest I am playing with mods, but you could still do this to haul everything home except the iron and then haul the iron to the ship. Ya all have fun.

You should combine the scounting for the swamp with searching for the trader you should have enough for the belt and that will make the iron transporting easier. Also the search range is about the same

Great vid! I've also found sailing with roughly 16 copper bars and 5 bronze will let you build and upgrade a new forge in the swamp. Along with enough materials to make a connecting portal home (pre-setup its pair at base before leaving of course) and you have a simple and enough setup to make a satellite base in/near the swamp. Add a smelter (and maybe kiln) and you can do all of your iron crafting and upgrades at this base, without any more sailing time required. Follow other commenters' tips on extra portals between this base and the next crypt and you'll only have to waste time running with iron scrap (can also alleviate corpse run downtime). When done with crypts in this swamp area, can break the base down 100% and pack everything non-portal-able into the new longship and find another swamp/move onto mountains. Maybe a quick trip home to drop off excess iron for base-crafting if desired, as this method prioritizes crafting weapons/armor and upgrading them.

I'm never worried about losing things in the sea, everything but the boat materials float.

The fire effect of the fire arrows is cancelled in the swamp as it is too wet.

I’ve come to find that poison resistance potions don’t really much of a difference and I’m a very new player to the game. With decent food and proper fighting.. you shouldn’t need them to be honest, so don’t focus them as a necessity for the swamp. Don’t be afraid to explore it just because you haven’t crafted those yet. Edit: side note, portals are very very useful when it comes to exploring. The swamp isn’t always easily accessible

The swamps is 100% my nemisis so far.. This place is so much harder for me than anything so far. I keep getting jumped by abominations, tons of leeches and can barely find any crypts. Can't wait to get out of here.

late question but if you go lvl 1 bronce mace you could just as well go lvl 4 club you get like 5 dmg less but without using bronce at all

I am familiar with the swamp...but there's one enemy type wich always makes it difficult for me. The Draugr archer...or should I say Draugr sniper.

what happens if you throw stuff from your inventory on the floor of the karve? does it despawn? what would happen if you pushed your cart onto the ship? i'm gonna try it and see what happens all that storage with the speed of the karve

Bone shield doesn't work on 1 star draughr archer's, be careful, I died trying to fight 2 of them, the bone shield let me down.

It feels like they have buffed 1 and 2 star draugr, it might just be that I'm using weaker gear than normal but a word of warning! If you are using Troll armour then beware! You may want to range these, they hit as big as wraiths.

By no means is this a particular criticism of you, but why does everyone playing this game on youtube seem to be so allergic to playing with 2 stamina foods and 1 health food? I've found running low on stamina to be far more dangerous than running low on health. Deer stew (actually minced meat sauce at the time because patch changes), Carrot Soup, and Queens jam were my go to food set up when first getting into the swamp. Plus, hidden upside: you can sub in the most easily farmable food, honey, for one of those stamina items to save on resources while you aren't doing anything too taxing without losing very much combat effectiveness, so for a while you can put a good deal less effort into your food generation as long as you set up a decent honey farm (5+ hives).

why not create a new world, create a workbench and a chest and when full, log out, put all in the new world´s chest and go back. when endindg farming, go home through the portal, and bring in your inventory all from the other world

Your portals look different than those in my game. Are you using a texture mod or something? In my game they look much more pixelated.

Theres no need to go back just because you are full. Create Another world called 'Storage or something. Build a 3x3 house with chests in and a bed+Fire and you can just log out and log into that and unload, go home and then log out and then into the storage map and then go back to you main game save. Boom!

I used to think fermenter are useless I thought I would be able to consume the mead straight up after making one from cauldron and actually messed up once because I brought a mead base to a boss fight and died and when I do learn how to use the fermenter (which is today) I thought I would only get 1 potion per mead so went out to make 5 fermenter after grinding a lot and a lot of bronze and fine wood and realized after that I get 6 per mead and now I have 30 posion resistance potion

First time i found a swamp... 3 two star leeches decimated my boat... lesson learnt... leeches suck...
