Disable Steering Column Lock - 6:07
Bypass Steering Column Module - 11:33
Video showing additional column details - • L322 ignition won't tu...
How to bypass the steering column module in your 2006-2012 Land Rover Range Rover when you cannot turn your key. This will also show you how to remove the steering column lock if your steering column has failed in the lock position.
When you cannot turn your key to start your Range Rover it is usually caused by a failure in the steering column. There is no known way to repair this part so you either need to spend $1000 to replace it with a used one that will also fail down the road, or buy a new one from Land Rover which ranges from $5000-8000+!!!!
In this video I show you how to remove the column and disable the steering lock and how to bypass the steering column module and re-wire the ignition switch into the interior lights.
This is basically a free repair that will allow you to start your L322 Range Rover when ever the interior lights are on such. Since your lights stay on for 30-60 seconds after you open the door, you will be able to start your vehicle 95% of the time without ever noticing you have changed anything.
If you sit in your truck for a while and then try to start it you will need to hit the interior switch above your head or open a door again.
The vehicle starts right up every time without having to wait 10 seconds as you normally would if you were removing fuse 18 and the lock will release when the lights dim so you will not drain your battery as you would if you simply jumpered the connector.
BMW Powered L322 (2005 and older): The system "essentially" works the same way although I think the issue revolves around the Bosch ECU. The BMW anti-theft system is famously difficult to circumnavigate. On later L322's the starting signal comes from the ignition switch. On BMW units the signal comes from the Bosch ECU after all the "starting parameters" have been met. Without an early L322 to play with I cannot give you a better workaround at this time, so here is what I can tell you to try and feel free to give me feedback.
From the service literature: "If all parameters for starting have been met, the ECM (C0331) provides a feed to the automatic transmission interlock relay (C1455) on a YN wire. If the gear selector lever is in 'Park' or 'Neutral', the interlock relay (C1455) provides a feed to the starter solenoid (C0179) on a B then BY wire. The energised starter solenoid allows the battery feed to power the starter motor."
Obviously there is a missing component blocking the ECU from commanding start. My guess would be no signal from the steering column module but without a scan tool and a truck I can't say for sure.
The Black wire coming out of the starter relay later becomes a Black/Yellow wire going into the starter motor. Try applying battery voltage to this wire while turning the key to "crank" and see if the engine will start. It will 100% crank but I don't know if the ECU will allow the injectors to fire if all the conditions are not met yet. It's worth a shot! Good luck!
And if anyone can tell me what parameters are not met when trying to start I may be able to dig a bit further.

I recently bought a 2005 L322 with the steering lock issue. My Rover had the added issue that even after I pulled fuse 18 and got the key to turn, the starter was not engaging. After trying this fix (before reading the comments section), the key turned every time but the starter still did not engage so I combined this workaround with another from Raymond Hernandez (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rNmboM5-v9nDiKc.html) and my Rover works perfectly now. The combination is to solder the blue unlock wire to the interior lights as Rob The Car Guy teaches so the key turns consistently, then I wired a relay into the starter wire Raymond Hernandez points out in his video with a momentary switch providing the ground for the new starter relay. Now I turn the key to the second position and hit a "starter button" that engages the starter and starts the Rover. This has worked perfectly for the last week.

Hi Rob thank you for documenting this. I appreciate it and solve my steering column lock problem and turn key. When I hooked up the blue wire to my floor lights, however, I discovered that rear window wipers are connected and turns on. How did you solve this?
@RobTheCarGuy
@RobTheCarGuy 3 жыл бұрын
😳 …. That’s .. um … not suppose to happen. What year / trim is your L322? Do the wipers run constantly or just for the 30 seconds the interior lights are on? Nothing jumps out at me how those would be related unless you grabbed the wrong blue wire or the wrong with in the steering column. The wiper switch is on the same side as the ignition so my guess would be a shorted wire from the wiper control stalk on the column or the stalk itself going bad. If you’ve already found the issue let me know what it was because that’s super strange. If you still have the problem get back with me and I’ll see if I can help you fix it.

SL Member super late so probably not still helpful but I left the leads tucked in the housing, not attached to anything. If you remove the wires.. The motor wont work and the lock stays in whatever position you left it in. If the motor is not seated correctly the lock gear could potentially swing to lock when it is struck(knee hitting the column).

Glad I could help! For you to consider: Every time that wire sees voltage the solenoid on the lock cylinder will release. This solenoid is normally closed, so it's at rest when not powered. Every time you hit the brakes you'll activate that solenoid and possible increase wear. I believe once the steering column module sees the engine has started it releases that solenoid so it doesn't stay on. That's why I didn't just run the wire to constant ignition power, I didn't want it to burn up early. Interior lights should only come on when you open the door, and they will stay on based on your settings, usually for 30-60 seconds. That was the best solution I could think about that was easy to access. I also would avoid anything going to the brake system as you don't know what the extra load will do. I see many crazy issues from people installing trailer brake controllers or light kits, especially as modern cars have moved to lighting modules. I doubt you'd create an issue, but there's no way to know for sure so I recommend everyone avoids pulling power from any of the wires under the dash unless you really know what you're doing. In short, for me at least, I don't see any upside to going to the brakes, only extra risk. If you find that you constantly have to start your Rover with the interior lights off and that's an issue, you may want a different source.
@garykirk
@garykirk 3 жыл бұрын

@RobTheCarGuy 3 жыл бұрын
That was the direction I was going to take before I found the jumper wire and figured out the lights are a good timer for me. What did you run your timer relay to since you have a BMW powered Rover? Are you just using that to cut power to the steering column module so that every time you start it up it thinks you pulled fuse 18? That would be clever! I assume you can no longer adjust the steering column after those 10 minutes if so, is that true?
@RocketSurgeon540
@RocketSurgeon540 3 жыл бұрын
@@RobTheCarGuy The column has power full time, so it can be adjusted like stock. The relay simply jumps the 2 pins together at the ELV to unlock the ignition and allow it to be turned. There is a solenoid that unlocks the ignition once the ELV unlocks. It unlocks the ignition switch the moment the interior lights come on, and remains active for 10 minutes after. It shuts off after 10 minutes to prevent battery drain. I think the solenoid only pulls like 200ma, but I feel better having it engaged only when needed. Relay standby current is like 1milliamp

Rob, this is a great video and seems like many people have this issue. I would like to find out the root cause of this issue too. I found this video right after I had pulled my steering column apart and also came to the conclusion of the plunger as a sensor. I pulled the lock motor assembly apart and I did apply 12v to the leads of motor which resulted in it working like it should. I have a feeling that either of the position sensors might be bad or maybe even the board. Over a year ago I had a similar issue with the key lock and pulled that apart. I removed the pin from the coil and it works flawlessly now. I did look up the coil part number and from what I remember, its still sold but have not had the time to replace it yet.

Would it be possible to just fix a switch on the fuse 18, on or off? That might be a solution? Gpx
@RobTheCarGuy
@RobTheCarGuy 3 жыл бұрын
Yup, that would do the same thing and many people actually do that to keep from puling the fuse. The downside of the switch is you will still need to wait 5-15 seconds for the module to reset and allow the key to turn. There's also some discussion about the long term implications of power spiking the module so much. The benefit of this would be not having to wait to turn the key and not having to take an extra step, so really it's up to the individual.

Greatly appreciate this info, and may consider taking a shot at it. But, first, has anyone diagnosed the actual ROOT-CAUSE of this problem? Rob did a great job dissecting the module, plunger, motor, lock/unlock cog, etc. Seems the core issue is somewhere inside that assembly, and if I dig that far into the project I sure would like to actually fix it instead of just implementing a workaround (although awesome, clever workaround, for sure!!!). Thoughts?

You think like I do! The more I get into projects like this, the more I wish I had diagrams for the printed circuit boards. I have two theories. First, the sensor that detects the position of the lock pin is no longer reading correctly, preventing the module from sending the "OK" signal back to the lock cylinder. Second would be a failure of one of the components on the printed board. Ideal would be something simple like a capacitor or resistor but I suspect it would be something more like a memory chip corrupting over time. The mechanical parts all worked in mine as you saw, including the motor. I didn't go past that because I didn't have a working one at the time to compare to. I do have another 2006 L322 that I purchased with the same issue but since the column isn't locked I doubt I'll pull it out this time around. I still have the Rover from this video that is now being used for parts since it got rear-ended, I can always pull the column back out and find the root cause if someone wants to send me a known good column module to compare it to....

Probably not. If you do you'll only send constant power to the interior lights when that switch is on and possibly burn up the light module. The fuse power is totally different from what we're doing here which is why the fuse trick only works once and this works every time.

My 2009 has 181,000 miles currently and this problem hasn't happened yet. I wouldn't do this to one that was working. If you're worried about getting stuck if it ever fails on you, you can just pull the fuse to reset the module. That will let you start the vehicle once. Most people drive these for years just by pulling the fuse every time they get in the car so no real concern for getting stuck somewhere.

Hello Rob, it that works - you will save my life. I have RR Vogue 2009 and experience problem with ignition - by not having a chance to turn the key. All started after simple replacing battery on a new one. WTF - that's incredible.... But just to resumer - if my steering wheel is NOT LOCKED - then there's no need to disassembly entire column and it should work fine making just the BYPASS from the solid blue socket until the cabin light to send a signal to the ignition that all works well to unlock the ignition. Question - don't you think (if not dismantling the column and not removing the engine and not blocking plastic gear in an unlock position - etc and staying just on bypassing operation ) that there exists a risk that over driving the steering wheel might lock itself? I believe your system of dismantling this engine and blocking plastic gear in an open position is a better option (even if my steering wheel is not locked - yet) as it has a chance to exclude entirely the problem of locking wheel in a future. I will start first by making this bypass to see if the key turns and will let you know.
@RobTheCarGuy
@RobTheCarGuy 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Greg! Yes, if your wheel is not locked you have no need to remove the column, just pull the plastic covers and get to that wire harness. You can test this on your 2009 Vogue by removing that plug and sending 12v into the blue wire I showed in the video. If you hear a click, and the key turns, you’re good to go. You can then solder and install that wire perminantly and deal with the steering lock down the road if you need to. For what it’s worth, I haven’t heard of anyone having their wheel lock after the column module failed but you could leave the module connector disconnected once the wire has been jumped just to be safe. I don’t think it will cause any other issues but it’s easy enough to plug back in if it does. Cheers and let me know if it solves your issue!

@RobTheCarGuy 3 жыл бұрын
What year? This won't work on 2005 and older with the BMW system. BMW L322's have an extra signal from the security module to command the starter. You'll either need to do this AND jump the starter wire or install an emulator module. If you have the Jaguar powered 06+, you pull the fuse and the key turns to "START" and nothing happens, you have an issue with power to the starter. We know the key turns so the Immobilizer works and your key is good. You pulled fuse 18 so it's not the column module. Check for battery power at the smaller wire at the starter solenoid with the key turned to "Start". This should only show up when you turn the key, not before. If this works, check for a good connection on the large cable from the starter to the battery. Usually you'll hear some type of audible noise from the starter like a clunk. If all is good, replace starter. If none of the wires going to the starter work with the key turned to "start", you have another issue. You'll need to get a wire diagram and follow the circuit from the battery to the ignition switch and to the starter. Something is broken or missing in that chain. Let me know what you find.

You may need to buy some Torx sockets if you don’t have them but from what I remember it’s not terribly difficult. Most of my videos I post are to show that this may seem scary but once you get into it you’d be surprised what you can do! If you were able to get the wiring done yourself then AWESOME JOB! You’re not far off. And think about it this way, if you totally screw it up what have you lost? You would have needed a new column anyway so you might as well give it a go! The only exception would be if you have the money to pay someone and better things to do with your time. Otherwise if you have more time than money just dive in! 👍

@RobTheCarGuy 3 жыл бұрын
The bypass allows the lock cylinder to release and turn, but it doesn't tell the vehicle that it's OK to start. From your description it sounds like it no longer "sees" the key. There is an RFID chip in the key and an antenna on the lock cylinder. When you insert the key the antenna reads the RFID chip and tells the immobilizer that there's a "GOOD" key and it's OK to start the vehicle when it's time. It also sends a signal to the column to check and release the steering lock and when that's done it allows the lock cylinder to turn. You bypassed the "allow the lock to turn" part but not the "Tell the immobilizer the key is GOOD" part. So, you either have a bad key, a bad antenna (which may be the whole lock cylinder so check on that), or something wrong with your immobilizer. If you have a spare key, try that first. If not, unfortunately you'll need to find someone who can pull data from the immobilizer so you can find the problem. Even if you have a key made at the dealer you'll likely still need someone to program it to the vehicle. Let me know what you find!

It’s certainly possible depending on how the previous owner wired it up. You would need to find where the wires go and then we could see. But first I’d pick up an Ampmeter that can see the draw. They run $30-50 and anything over 80mA is something to worry about. Hook up the ampmeter, close all the doors and turn everything off. After 20 minutes you should see less than 80mA as modules shut down. If you have a 250+ mA reading that’s your drain! Disconnect that bypass switch and run the test again. If it’s now gone, your mechanic is spot on the money!

@@RobTheCarGuy can u send a link to that Ampmeter? I have a voltage reader so I’m not sure if they’re the same… Also, I have the LandRover lynx system. Would that pinpoint the problem? I’ve never used it but the owner gave it to me

@@showrunner2183 here’s the one I have for myself and it works as well as the $200 I had previously. Bside ACM91 1mA Clamp Meter DC/AC... www.amazon.com/dp/B07D3SVCZY?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share You can do this by measuring voltage drop with a voltmeter but I think this tool works much better and is easier to use. I usually clamp it on my negative battery cable to hunt for parasitic drains. There are plenty of videos on how to find battery draws if you find it’s not the bypass switch.

@@showrunner2183 read my previous reply. Look for any reading over 80mA on the meter after 20 minutes of the vehicle sitting and everything off. Any time you open a door you wake up the computer modules and need to wait another 20 minutes for them to shut down. Pull fuses until the draw goes away, that tells you what circuit is your problem and narrows it down from there. You’ll need a wiring diagram if it’s not your switch.

So my column is stuck in the open position and have been using the fuse trick to start it, I soldered in the wire as you described which worked to unlock the key ignition. Success!... However the truck would not start when the key turned, no action to the starter. Is there an additional immobilizer sequence that must be replicated as well? Fyi My key remote doesn't work to lock/unlock but will start the truck. I snipped the wire and plugged in module and car starts again, albeit just once. Im left scratching my head right now, so if you have any ideas I'm all ears. Thanks!

Min. Corey Shealey I think it’s the only blue wire but I can’t remember. If it’s not obvious, look at the position of the wire in my video. Your wire should be in the same spot if your L322 is a 2006 or slightly newer. The closer you get to 2012 the greater the chance the wire harness could be different.

I seem to be attracted to old Euro cars. Tons of car for very little $$$ but this is the reason they have massive depreciation. I had a 2000 S430 that I spent close to $9000 on making it a car that would go 400,000+ miles only to have it T-boned and totaled out for roughly $2500 in damages. That's the ugly side of low resale value in the USA. The end of that story was I could have taken the insurance company to court and maybe got $6500-$7000 after 5 or 6 days of my time. During that time my 2006 Jag fell into my lap for $3000 with 107,000 miles so I took the check and sold the damaged S430 ending up with $4700 that way. But, all that is what you get with these vehicles. The BMW Range Rovers and basically totaled when the engine goes out. I have a customer with a Porsche Boxter with 56,000 miles that needs a $7000 engine. There's a 100% identical car listed for $6500 and 49,000 miles just an hour away. It's sad to have a beautiful Porsche sitting in a parking lot that's basically worth $0 because of a mechanical issue.

@@rocko882 The emulator is a plug and play device that overrides most of the anti-theft and steering lock electronics and allows the key to turn. I bought one from UHS Hardware for my 2006 L322 HSE with the Jag engine 4.4L. Item GK-1300. See the installation video on UHS. It solved the key lock problem but I still have a "Crank but no start" problem. If I disconnect my battery completely for 1 minute, It will run 3 seconds like a champ but then quits. Still have a anti-theft triggering to kill the ignition. I hope someone can help me over-ride that.
