Here's the story of why I purchased my 2006 Range Rover HSE with 210,000 miles, what kind of condition a $5000 Range Rover is in, and what went wrong in the first year of owning it.
Are these L322 Range Rovers unreliable? What kind of repairs can you expect on a Range Rover? How much does owning a Range Rover cost?
Some updated numbers: I found the purchase agreement and I actually paid $4950 on this truck. 1 year later and roughly 15,000 miles I have spent less than $10,000 including purchase and all repairs and maintenance doing most of the work myself.
Ignoring fuel costs I spent about $500 a month on this vehicle. Certainly more expensive than some other vehicles, but realistically most SUV's will cost $300-400 per month in depreciation, repairs and maintenance.
Point is, the Range Rover isn't as scary or unreliable as most people would lead you to believe. Most of these problems are typical of a 200,000 vehicle in general. If you can do some repairs yourself you should 100% not ignore these trucks.
I would highly recommend 2006+ to avoid the BMW 4.4 V8 and their VANOS issues. The later Range Rovers have fewer issues and are still very affordable and easy to find.

I’m English .. had 5 over the past 15 years from p38- L322 facelift 4.4 and all between , sports too.. never had any issues at all! Although the highest miles on one of mine was 123,000 on a 2003 4.4 v8 L322.

I recently bought one of these, but a 2010 at 218k miles. Yikes, I know. Im a little embarrassed because it was an impulse buy. My husband and I had our front yard tree crush and total both our SUVs. I needed a cheap used vehicle because we cant afford 2 monthly payments. Anyway, I've already spent over half of what I bought it for, on repairs!! I'm not giving it up.This will be the vehicle my son learns how to drive in. I'm hoping and praying it lasts at least 4+ years. I only drive locally and not too much. I love it!! It was a dream of mine to own a Land Rover as a child. Now I'm learning how to care for it, inside and out. The safer, at home mechanic work is fun and satisfying, as is detailing the inside and outside. Thank you for this post. Its nice to know I'm not the only person who is passionate about maintaining an old Range Rover.

Jeremy Clarkson and Harry from Harry's Garage just did a video on their L322 Range Rovers talking about how they are the best Range Rover built to date. I would agree with that 100%. I am currently driving a 2009 HSE that I used the parts from the wrecked 225,000+ '06 to repair. I also have another 2006 green HSE that we're fixing up to be my daughters first car. The 2009 had 121,000 miles when I got it and it's at 181,000 now. At one point I was seriously looking at the newer Range Rovers but I've since decided when it's time to retire the 2009 I'm going to get another L322 again. I just can't find anything that does what the L322 does better than the L322 if that makes sense. Congratulations on the 2010! Don't think of it as "spending $5000 on a car I paid $10,000 on", think of it as "I have $15,000 into a car that was $80,000+ when new". Lots of people buy depreciated European vehicles and get mad their $10,000 car has a $4000 repair. They forget they aren't fixing a $10,000 car, they are fixing an $80,000 car they bought at a huge discount!

Definitely bought one of the most reliable years. Had a 2008 supercharged that treated me really well. Have a 2011 now and we’ll see how it goes

@@thelifeliverXx I love mine. I don’t suggest anyone really buy an old Range Rover unless you can do your own work on it though. I’ve spent Mayne $2500 in parts to get her up to snuff but if I took it it the dealer to get the same work done it would be over $10k

@@thelifeliverXx Escalade is such a basic car. Nothing exciting about it. The Range Rover is just so iconic. My 2011 with 510hp is a beast. Fantastic off-road system, great styling, and just an over all wonderful machine when everything is taken care of.

Is your 2011 SC or NA? What's your experience been like with it? I think if I found a supercharged 2010+ with the entertainment package that needed timing chains I'd snatch it up in a heartbeat.

I got the L322 BMW engine. Although it's a headache it keeps me busy not my daily. I got a GMC Denail for that.

Many thanks Rob! Just bought a 2011, and 79k miles, had to eepqlce air shocks, control arms, bushings, rear rotors, pads front and back, etc was $4,200 mechanic here in metro Detroit specializes in range rovers.. Cheaper than dealer for sure..

That sounds like a decent deal for all that work! Also sounds like you'll be in good shape for a while now. Finding a good specialist makes a HUGE difference in your ownership experience. Glad to hear it!

2007 RRS, 220,000 miles, keep up on the maintenance, repaired what needs to be repaired . The 4.4 Jaguar engine keeps on keeping on.😊... yes I've replaced the gear selector and shift linkage. Everything still works, like it should

I have a 2004 and really love it. It's wonderful car to drive I just hit 168000 and now she needs a steering column. The BMW engine had to be torn down to replace the Vanos and timing chains and guides and fix some oil leaks a couple of years ago and last year the trans went out. I have a repair shop so all the work was done by me and my son. I source good used parts when I can. I watched your video on the column bypass then found out from your comments section that it doesn't work on the BMW without jumping pin 5 and 11 which allowed me to get from the driveway to the shop. Thanks for that video. I did take the column apart to find the problem. when you put the key in the column would lock and then relock and not start. The problem was that little solenoid inside the column is to tell the column that it is locked or unlocked. in the back of the solenoid/sensor is a little magnet that was broken and causing the sensor to stick so the car did not know what position to stay in. I'm trying to source one so far, no luck. I have the same spot on top of my hood and the roof is getting sun burned as well. She has been a challenge but I'm not ready to give up on her yet

Did you ever find the part and fix it? You'd be the first person I know of to get a solid answer on the root cause! Sounds like an awesome truck! The VANOS and transmissions are the two big items on these. If the work was done correctly you should have many years of life remaining.

You need to check your sources on the 4.2L SC and the 4.4L Jag engine are know to to go over 500,000 do not leak. The 2010-2012 5.0L had time chain issues.

Maybe I need to re-watch the video and see what I said. I don't remember any more LOL! I agree with you 100%! The AJV8 has been shockingly good to us. No major leaks, no mechanical issues (knock on wood), and pleasant to drive. The 5.0 are known for chain failures, especially the earlier ones, and many had issues with high pressure fuel pumps and injector failures as well. When it's time to replace my '09 HSE I'll likely go find another one, maybe an Autobiography or Supercharged, but more than likely an '08 or '09 at the end of the day. I really think these are the sweet spot of the L322 and the L322 is probably the best Range Rover that has been built to date.

Ha, I bought one in the summer, 4.2 supercharged. 243,000 miles on the clock (£2,800 GBP). It's 2007 so has a variety of things that need doing commensurate with the age of the car but nothing major. It goes like a train and drives like new.

I've never driven the SC L322, just the generation after, but they look very cool. If the 2009 I'm driving now ever gets retired I'll be on the look out for an L322 Autobiography or Supercharged more than likely. The price you paid is nuts! Congratulations on what sounds like a smoking deal!

Rob, I replaced my backup camera with one I bought on Amazon for about $20. I had to solder and splice into the RR connector.

Dennis Fagan that’s awesome!! It seemed like you could do that unless Rover decided to use some crazy protocol. What camera did you get? It seems like all the ones I find are the same repackages low resolution units from China. It would be awesome to get an HD backup camera, especially in low light.

So true! I think a lot of Euro cars get a bad wrap because people just aren't used to working on them. I've had some pretty horrible repairs on Japanese and American cars but it still seems like everyone thinks Euro's are worse. My experience has been they aren't much worse than any other group of vehicles once you get use to the different procedures. All my cars cost twice as much because I expect them to feel brand new 15 years down the road. But that's true for my American cars also!

Hey Rob, Im down in New Zealand, also a mechanic, my shop now concentrates on classic restorations, mainly USA cars from 30s to 60s. I have a 2008 Jag sovereign which has the supercharged motor, absolutely love it. Recently bought a slightly rough 06 Range rover also with the super charged motor. Rangie had the no turn ignition key problem, after searching lots of internet fixes yours is the best. These cars are great value for money at this age, its the technology that doesn't seem to last as long as the mechanical parts can, I have a 55 Chev pick up and 57 chev Wagon, love them all but they are stone age compared to what you get in the Jag and Rangie. I don't normally comment on these videos but you gave me a laugh and a solution so just wanted to say thanks. Cheers George

Thanks for the comment! It took a year for me to see it but I'm glad to hear it and thank you! Is the Sovereign the same as the Super V8 we got here? Sounds like it. I picked up a wrecked Super V8 a few years ago and it's been sitting under a cover ever since. I'm planning to swap the SC V8, Brembo's and full interior to my XJ8L at some point down the road. I absolutely love high powered, high lux sedans.

Hi Rob. Yep my Jag is the super V8 same body shape as your one in the background of your video. The soveriegn was Jags flagship luxury model. I prefer this to the harder ride of the XJR. The super V8 also gets the brake upgrade that the XJR has, so its basically an XJR that rides nicer and has more comfortable seats! Im still loving the RR also. I fully agree with you about the good value in these cars if you are able to do the repairs and maintenance yourself. Just out of interest i am considering adding a 2006 Bentley to my fleet, these coupes with the W12 twin turbo motor at over 550HP are now also real good value. Most shit cars do around the 200/210 miles do they not ??? One day folk will wake up and realize what they have missed at silly silly prices their loss not ours the R/Rover owners You show me any car and I mean any car that will do what these do !!! I have had a 2 door and a 4 door classic and now an L322 not one has ever ever let me down !! You can drive for miles and miles and miles and not feel like a bag of shit when you get out.. You can go over hills mountains mud baths and then take the wife to the ritz as long as you have washed it !!! The Toyota Land Cruiser Amazon is probably a better car but no class no feeling I know because I have had one I am not a snob but the R/Rover gives you a feeling no other car can give and I do include the other high flyers in that assumption ... My advice to anyone is go and get one before you reply to me BUT AND A BIG BUT Make sure you are not getting a Lemon that has not been looked after because if you do you will suffer and I mean suffer Just do what you would with any other car check everything and make sure it has a service history If you do not you will be spending a lot of money where others should have spent !!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thats where the poor reputation comes from some folk use them as a work horse and treat them like a small family saloon .. Tr using any of the top brands in the same way and you will have the same issues !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Rant Over !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Good up load by the way !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Awesome video. I love the L322 but I've not long bought a 2012 L320. The reason being the 3.0 litre engine is best for fuel economy and decent performance over the older slow 2.7 L and powerful but thirsty 3.6 L versions. I have heard for the better fuel economy and performance in the L322 the 4.4 Litre engine is better but I live in UK and because of my age I would never get insured on a 4.4L engine :( But I love mine and everything works and so far have not had an issue :D I have put money away for when something goes wrong but hopefully with proper maintenance should be a lot less likely . Ps I've subbed :D

We don't get any of those engine choices here in the US, just the 4.4 V8 and the Supercharged 4.2L option. I suspect some of the Euro engine choices would be awesome but American's just don't buy them when manufactures try to bring them over. Have you spent much time with the L322? I'm curious to hear what you think about the size difference. I rented an L320 last year and it seems like it would be a great car for 1-2 people but I feel like the L322 is already smaller than I want so the L320 seems too small for me. I don't know though, it seems like they are super popular! I see L320's 3 to 1 for every L322 around here. Most people must have liked them better.... Thanks for the comment and the sub!

@@RobTheCarGuy Ah I see :) I think the issues here are the fuel prices not so bad if you have a diesel in smaller engine or even a newer bigger but much more efficient engine probably manageable to afford fuel but if you have a petrol Range Rover and you do a lot of driving you've got no chance of been able to afford it unless your pretty well off financially or don't do a lot of driving. My 3.0 seems to be best of both worlds realistic economy and decent performance :) averages 30 mpg had 38 mpg on motorway and someone who has 5.0 litre petrol range rover sport was struggling to get 8 mpg on average obviously his performance is crazy power though :) And no not really when I was looking at them I looked at Disco, L322 and L320. I was disappointed with the boot size on the L322 compared to the L320 lets just say I thought it would be much bigger and wasn't It was very similar size. Cab size the L320 has more than enough room for me and girlfriend and others, and I've sat in back too and like it :) I think this is where the L322 is much more spacious in the cab so I can see where you coming from but mine is big enough for me :) My decision was then between the Disco and L320, now I will admit buying the L320 part of me wishes I brought the Disco for the boot (for caving gear and trips) but I think apart from that I love my L320 and can fit more than enough cave gear in boot :D just obviously the Disco has a bigger boot lol. I imagine if I had bought a Disco I would be happy with the boot and wishing I would have brought a range rover anyways:) And over here the I have heard the L320 were much cheaper to buy than the L322 when new, not sure if that was the case over in US? If so it just means the L320 was much more affordable to a greater amount of people. There both awesome cars with such unforgettable looks :D And no worries I'll be watching your other videos at some point :) Take care

The BMW 4.4 is a great engine, just not the best choice for the L322 here in The States. A VANOS failure here is a $5000 repair, basically what it would cost to go buy another running 2004 HSE. They also have more issues with oil leaks than the AJV8 that comes in the later L322's. I'd wager 70% of the bad reputation Range Rovers have here in America is down to the BMW V8. The other 30% is the steering column, air suspension and transmission issues that are common. It's a self fulfilling prophecy here. Used prices are very low because people are afraid of expensive repairs and most used vehicles have unaddressed issues. People rarely spend lots of money on maintenance and repairs because its more expensive than the vehicle is worth. So, the vehicles are cheap because they aren't repaired or repaired cheaply, and they aren't repaired or repaired cheaply because they vehicles aren't worth much..... It's dumb but it allows people like me to buy really nice cars for really cheap because I'm not afraid of the repairs and maintenance.

You have not lost your mind. We have an '06 and '07, and while they have their moments of frustration, they are not particularly any worse than other cars (looking at you BMW!!!) we've owned. But in between those moments of steering lock failing, or DVD player frying, or doing the airbag dance, there are thousands of miles of quiet, Rover air conditioned, air ride comfort in seats that adjust 27 different way from up. I pull my 5000# RV trailer with mine, and love the Jag motors. I've heard the 5.0 motor has an annoying, costly, timing chain issue, so the '06 to '09 is the sweet spot. Would I recommend a RR to just anyone? Probably not. But, to those of us who are mechanically minded, and understand the value of the aftermarket community RR has, these are the hidden gems in the wild. Mercedes definitely does not have the aftermarket community of loyalists that we have. BMW has a tiny bit, but it's not as helpful. Dodge? May be simple to work on, but the driving experience is day and night difference. To be fair, even the L322 isn't close to the reliability of my 700K mile chevy suburban, but that's a magic truck, and there's not much that comes close to that. But RR is a close second in my book. Keep Calm and Drive On!!!

Not bad. It got rear ended and developed a misfire and small coolant leak shortly after that. Likely I needed to pull the intake and replace a couple small hoses and ignition coils but I purchased a 2009 and started to rebuild that one instead. A little TLC though and it would still be running strong. I'd do it again. In fact, I technically now own three of them..... :-)

Congratulations! I haven't driven the SC version yet but they seem to be well regarded by their owners. How do you like yours? The backup camera is a common issue on the L322. The early versions had problems with a solder joint breaking on the circuit boards. A few people have been able to take them apart and re-solder the connection. The camera is different for the later L322s but I can't remember the exact years it changed. I can tell you I took apart my backup camera on the '09 and the internal design has been improved over the older ones. In my camera there was no damage internally so I cleaned the connections on the video cable and was able to get it working again, but the image quality is intermittent. After a couple weeks it no longer works consistently so I cannot give you an exact repair but I would encourage you to remove the camera and clean/inspect the connections to see if that helps. If not, open the camera up and check the connections to the circuit board. It seems the vast majority of backup camera issues are with the camera itself, so if all else fails, replacing the camera should fix your issue.

Hi, you said to avoid the ones with the BMW Engine. Does that include the 2007 Range Rover HSE, cause I think it has the Jaguar Engine?

Nope! Starting in 2006 they did indeed have the Jaguar based 4.4L V8. IMO it’s the best engine made available in the USA. Starting in 2010 they went with the 5.0 V8 which still seems to be WAY better than the BMW engine, but they are known to have timing chain failures which become a $4000-5000 repair. An ‘07 HSE would be great! I have two ‘06 and an ‘09, not to mention an 05 Jag XJ8 and an 06 Jag Super V8. So far no real engine issues to speak of.

I think buying L322 with miles over 150K is inviting trouble unless you are a mechanic. A mechanic can buy anything because the money is in labor, not parts from my experience. I have 05 with BMW engine that vanos and timing went Kaput at 149K [right after installing A grade rebuilt transmission]. After consulting 2-3 mechanics, the price to fix it was hovering around 4-6K. Of course, I decided to look for a used engine, and six months down the road of scheming the internet daily, I found one with 56K miles way cheap, though it was an 03 model. Last weekend it arrived from California, and that engine was so damn clean. We installed it in 10 hours nonstop, and my baby is back on the road like new. I love RR dearly, and willing to throw any dollars on it if I can't fix it myself in the driveway. With one, expect to spend cool 5K, or more a year on repairs. If you are a mechanic, it is good to own one. If you are rich and you are a mechanic, it is the best thing ever to have. If you have no money and you don't know how to fix cars, please stay away from Range rover because it will bring pain, take all your tax return money, and some more stress, especially summer, or when you have visitors. In addition, sensors work very well, so a minor thing will throw a codes just, especially around inspection time. God forbid you get code # P0011 with a minor rattle, wow! sweet Jesus!. That, my friend, is about 4K out of the pocket!

Phil R #Truth! 😂 The 2006- L322 have a much better track record although starting in 2010 with the 5.0 they went right back to timing chain problems 🤷🏼‍♂️ Still, the Vanos 2005 and earlier ones were an absolute nightmare as they got older. It’s very sad that someone could give you a Range Rover and $2000 cash and you’d still lose money 😬 But all the BMW owners are in the same boat. Mine was the lower metal bushings in the rear spindle. I had to pry on them 472 different ways before I finally could see them loose. I think the tire needs to come off to have enough room to get to them. Anyway, I also replaced the sway bar links and something else chasing that noise. Noises travel through metal and can be tricky to pinpoint.

And when I say metal, they have a rubber dust boot so they look like rubber bushings from the outside but they are solid metal ball joints internally. If you see a thin rubber membrane there’s a metal joint on the inside. Any play at all means it’s shot and needs to be replaced. If water gets in them and they rust you’ll get the squeaking / creaking noises.

I have a 2005 l322 the key will not turn in the ignition I tried pulling the fuse replacing the battery pulling the steering column cover to bypass. Nothing works. Can you please give me some advice to fix my problem. (I LOVE MY RANGE ROVER)

Does pulling the fuse allow it to start one time? If so I have heard there is an immobilizer emulator that you can wire in to trick the BMW computer. Unfortunately the 2005 and older use BMW's DME (engine computer) as part of the immobilizer so wiring the ignition switch to a 12v source like a dome light will not work on the older L322, only 2006+ If nothing lets the key turn it could be a bad key or lock cylinder.

@@hassangarrison7638 sounds like a second problem has developed as well. Either a bad ignition switch/lock cylinder or the key is no longer being accepted. Does the key turn a little bit before hitting the lock pin or does it feel like it's frozen? If it feels like it turns a little bit first it may have burned out the solenoid that releases the pin. Either way I think your issue is more complicated.

Doesn't turn at all. Radio comes on, drivers door only works, alarm sounds when I open the door with the key or connect the battery. I only have one key no remote.

@@hassangarrison7638 sounds like an issue with the security module. If you don't have a remote to deactivate the alarm most vehicles will have a way to recognize the key, either from the ignition switch or the door lock cylinder. I don't know on the L322 but is there anything you do that turns the alarm off? Without a scan tool it's very hard to say what's going on. I suspect it won't recognize the key but that is certainly not a typical failure that I've seen. Good luck! Let me know if you figure out what is behind that issue.

biffa4444 yeah, that might be a future project for me. I just resoldered the connectors on a couple of mine but the resolution of the factory camera just doesn’t seem up to par. I’ve been thinking about an upgraded camera. What model did you get?

I have a 2006 range rover HSE purchased last year December. Love it, Java black, for $8,000. I am a Tech and just recently replace my power steering pump. I have now seen so so many youtube vids from America re the Range Rover all with bad comments yours was not bad to be fair but lets have a look at lets say a Jeep with that milage and age and lets do a comparison an honest comparison ie comfort style capabilities "standard that is" and if the Jeep comes out tops I will honestly eat my hat and I will !! Fair point! I will say part of the issue for us living across the pond comes down to numbers. First, far fewer people own Euro cars. I'd wager around 22-28% drive something with an EU badge. That means less mechanics familiar with Euro vehicles and lower availability for parts. We pay significantly more for parts here from what I've seen and heard from UK enthusiasts. The euro vehicles we get here mostly tend to be high performance which makes sense considering the higher price tag due to importation etc. Higher performance, higher need for maintenance and upkeep obviously. The issue comes from the used market IMO. Euro cars depreciate much faster here, so you can spend $20,000 to buy a BMW that was $80,000 6 years ago. You're now making payments you can barely afford to look rich, and SURPRISE you're still paying to repair an $80,000 car when it breaks. People think Euro cars are junk because the $20,000 Honda is way cheaper to keep running than the $20,000 BMW, JAG etc.... People who buy them new, and can afford them, think Euro vehicles are far superior. People who buy them used and take them to experiences mechanics, think they are unreliable, over complicated and money pits. For the record, we all think most Jeeps and Chrysler's are junk also! :-)

Rain sensing wipers. I’m led to believe that it’s not the sensor that fails but the wiring loom which runs under the door seal on the right hand side, passenger side in left hand drive countries.

That would be interesting to find out. Any idea what the issue would be? Water intrusion into an unprotected connector? Harness chafing on something? Another issue, and one I might explore down the road, is the Lighting Control Module. The '06 had a bad module that would throw 15 trouble codes when scanned, but the automatic lights seemed to work just fine so I couldn't tell you what the issue was. The 2009 had zero problems after I replaced the SRS Module, but recently it also seems to have a failed LCM that is setting multiple failure codes. It seems to be a chronic issue that would be worth diving into in a future video I am thinking....

I've heard the TDV8 is an awesome motor! I think the turbochargers are the only this people really seem to have fail that's a big $$$ item if I recall. With that said, if we got those engines here in The States that's probably the one I'd want the most. Last I checked I think those TDV8's got 26+ MPG compared to mine which averages 17.6 MPG. I don't hate the '03-05, I just can't see the reason to go buy one after realizing how much better the '06-'09 version is. The BMW 4.4 is a fantastic motor aside from the VANOS issues and maybe the oil leaks. So far none of my AJ Jag powered L322's have major oil leaks and I've never heard of one loosing a timing chain or any other major engine problems for that matter. The '10-12 direct injected 5.0 that came after are known for chain issues and occasionally fuel pump/injector problems. The later chassis are the most refined but the DI engines had some teething issues for the first few years. In my opinion paying $2000 more for an '06+ is worth it and will be significantly less expensive to own. I have a 2009 currently with the updated interior and I really think that's the sweet spot for the V8 L322's. I looked into a 2012 but aside from the digital dash they are nearly identical to the 2009 on the interior. On a side note, since you mentioned your wife's '04, when Ford purchased Land Rover, the price Land Rover was paying to BMW for every L322 engine was the price it cost ford to build the entire V6 Mustang at the time....

What do you love about the L320’s? I’ve driven both, but I find the larger L322 fits me much better. I use mine constantly for towing, transporting cargo or packing to the brim for family trips. The Sports seem to be more popular though so I always wonder why that is. 🤷🏼‍♂️

​@@RobTheCarGuy Me personally, I like the exterior design of the L320 as well the color options that were available for this generation. Vesuvius Orange, which I think was only available for the 2006 model year is one of my favorites, along with Galway and Giverny Green and Nara Bronze. Also, the size is just right. It's a big vehicle, but smaller that the L322, as with most SUV's that get that "sport" moniker in their model name. That might be why they are popular and even preferred over the L322.

Good question! Something in the column module stops sending the unlock signal to the ignition switch. My guess is the module no longer knows if the column is locked or unlocked and without knowing the position it will not allow the key to turn as a safety/anti-theft feature.

As far as I know the L322 came with Bluetooth, but it's a common failure item. If you look at the steering wheel you should see a button that looks like a face talking and one that says R /T. The face you push to give verbal commands and the R / T stands for Radio / Talk (or Telephone) If you push the button, the radio should get quiet. If nothing happens, it's likely not working or has been bypassed. When the module fails it prevents the radio from working as all the modules in the trunk are daisy chained using fiber optic cables. Most people unplug the phone module and reroute the fiber optic cable into the next module, essentially skipping the bad module and disabling the phone system. If the Rover has the DVD system it will also have an AUX input behind the center armrest. You can listen to music but it probably wouldn't be ideal for making calls.

Of all the things the internet has taught mankind.... I think the most valuable of all is the knowledge that you can put an LS1 in ANYTHING!! :-) One consideration is that the LS1 is typically designed for higher performance on the top end where Range Rovers (and Jeeps for example) usually would benefit from an engine with lots of low and mid-range torque. There are lots of LS Jeep swaps but I've always heard they aren't the ideal setup. I have no first hand experience with one though so take my opinion with a grain of salt. I've found lots of things "The Internet" told me was terrible turned out to not be bad at all....

I've found that all manufactures have their own "design language" and, like any language, it takes you a little bit to figure it out. Once you get the hang of it though, you become fluent quickly! Eventually a lot of the really bizarre things start to make sense and you'll fly through repairs in no time!

"Horribly Unreliable" Only if they haven't been maintained properly. A lot of people will purchase one and then spend next to nothing on maintenance and then wonder why they break down. They are a sophisticated four wheel drive and a lot of the tech built into them twenty years ago is only just being intro'd on some makes of 4x4. Your opening lines to this video are not exactly accurate. A lot of mechanics hate them because they require an extensive range of skill, knowledge and experience to maintain properly and most just don't have the level of skill to address their needs. It takes either a main dealer of a bloody good specialist to satisfy these needs. Yes they are expensive to maintain, but so are other prestigious marques. Try buying any vehicle and doing everything either on the cheap or not at all and see where that gets you. Remember this is a 2006 car, fifteen years old now.

So very true! In our industry it’s generally well known you never want to service a BMW on its third owner. First owner paid $80k and always services it. Second owner paid $30k and usually keeps it going. Third owner paid $8k and doesn’t realize they still need to repair an $80,000 vehicle.

I had a 2010 vouge se tdv8 3.6. Bought it at 164k sold at 179k . Full comprehensive service history is a deal breaker. Just get the gear box oil fully flushed. ( mobile company's can do this on your drive. Get the transfer box and differentials oil changed. Get the engine flushed and put mobil 1 oil. And changed ever 5k . Then you have a bench mark. Obviously disks and pads bush's are a given . And even with the 25miles per gallon. Its the most enjoyable car you will ever own. I think the 2010 onward l322 is better than the l405. It just does everything well.

I agree on many points! 5K Oil changes are crucial with nearly all modern engines if you want to maximize useful engine life. Anything with variable cam timing is highly prone to failures from oil degradation or carbon deposits. I like the looks of the L405 but I see only marginal differences with the interior and I don't see any real advantage mechanically. I like the idea of the LWB L405 but when you can pickup a 2012 L322 for less than 1/2 the price of a 2013 L405 it's hard to justify in my mind. We don't have the diesel option in the US unfortunately, so we're stuck with the 18mpg V8, but we do have cheaper fuel which takes some of the MPG sting away. Right now premium is around $4/gal so it takes about $100 for a tank and I get about 450 miles of range. Most of my driving is highway currently. So we pay about $0.23 per mile in fuel. If the average price for diesel in the UK is 1.78/L or 6.722 /gal Euro, 25gal would cost $191.25 with current exchange rates. You'd get roughly 626 miles of range for a cost of $0.31 per mile in fuel. That's really interesting! I always thought the diesel offset the fuel taxes you guys paid but it seems we still are paying about 25% less for fuel. No wonder V8 Rovers are much less common in the UK! $0.41 per mile would be nearly twice the price we pay for premium unleaded. With all that said, it seems parts for these vehicles are WAY cheaper than we are able to find them for here in The States. It would be really interesting to compare cost of ownership over a 5-10 year period between the USA and the UK for these vehicles. I'm curious how that would turn out.

I think good l322's are starting to go up in price. Especially a mint 5.0 supercharged. I cant remember the last time I saw a l322 on the road in uk and I do a lot of miles. 35k a year. Its £ 555 a year to tax . Which is very hefty. And I think people are scared of buying a second hand one. Coupled with the running costs. I think most people who might want one.. go for the discovery 4 or range rover evoque . The 2010 3.6tdv8 triple black vouge se I had was is remarkable condition. I put acf 50 ( aircraft grade anti corrosion oil) into every crevice especially around the tailgail Created and detailed the car to within an inch of its life. The 20inch alloys fully refurbed. Pirelli scorpions all round. New running boards . Full interior led upgrade( mades a big difference) L405 sv autobiography front seat turned alloy arm rest adjusters. The guy i sold it to in January 2020. Who runs a car lot. Bought it. And to this day keeps it as his personally car!!. That is a testament to how well it looked after. A full engine rebuild with new recon turbos and labour for a tdv8 3.6 is 4000£ . There is aplace in Birmingham that can do the turbos on a l322 with out taking the engine out the car for 2200 all in!!. The vouge is the range rover to have the sport is not regarded high in car dealer circles. As is tuned that turbo replacement is more common and that is a body off job!!!

You do see very rare l322' s for sale occasionally a very clear autobiography black was going for 18k . 78k miles on clock And a ultra rare l322 autobiography ultimate edition!! At a very special luxury car dealer near High Wycombe. They wanted 36k for it. Very nice trim levels but is only 4 seater. Very low miles as well. I bet a ultimate edition l322 in the USA is a lot more than 36000 £

Technically "yes" although it was rear ended and totaled out. I used the front end to rebuild a 2009 HSE purchased from a salvage auction and we're going to soon use it to rebuild a green 2006 HSE that had a small engine fire among other issues. Point is, it didn't get pulled off the road because of any mechanical failures and I loved it enough that I bought two more! :-)

Nice! The 2004-2005's are usually available for a little less because people are scared of the VANOS issues. How's the rest of the vehicle? I've seen a bunch of good running L322's for sale where the interior is absolute trash. I don't know why people don't clean them occasionally.

Check out PowerfulUK on the camera. Rebuilt with upgraded components for around $150. Worked like a charm in my ‘06 HSE.

Thanks for the tip, I’ll check them out! I pulled the camera out of the ‘09 and took it apart to check the contacts. The camera was fine but the body shop painted over the connector. I cleaned it up and it worked better for a bit but it’s still inconsistent. I’d love to find a better option that has a better picture.

The industry rumor was that at the time Ford purchased Land Rover, they could build an entire V6 Mustang for what they were paying for one M62 engine from BMW. Since they had also recently purchased Jaguar it's not shocking they adapted the AJ V8 to use in the L322s. From 2003-2005 they came with the M62 BMW 4.4 V8, notorious for their problems with VANOS and timing chains. This is why you see so many early L322s that are mechanically totaled. From 2006-2009 they came with the AJ Jaguar Engine. Either the 4.4L V8 or the 4.2L Supercharged V8. This engine seems to be the "Golden V8" as they seem to be free of chronic mechanical problems. We never got the diesel V6 as an option in the USA so this seems to be the most reliable engine choice for us. 2010-2012 saw the 5.0L V8 and the return of timing chain problems to the Range Rover family. The new V8's seem to suffer from chain failures around 100,000 miles and I've heard of repair bills in the $6000-8500 ranges. At least these have a high enough resale value that most owners seem to get the chains replaced if they fail, but that should be a consideration when purchasing a later L322. Aside from the chain failures they seem to be fairly reliable, and I don't hear of many 2010-2012 L322 owners with chronic mechanical issues. You also get the upgraded bumpers, lights and the digital dash, so the late production features may offset the chain issues they are prone to. They also do a great job of holding their resale value and represent a huge bargain IMO when compared to the 2013+ Range Rover that easily sells for twice the price on the used market.

my 01 d2 ran like a monster through 240k, couple things here and there, land rovers are fantastic and aren't vehicles for people who dont like owning a vehicle. if you want no maintenance buy an rc car ev piece of crap

Agreed! Lots of people see cars as transportation and nothing more. Honda and Toyota make some awesome cars for those people, my wife included! (2016 CR-V) Then there's the people who notice all the details that go into $80,000+ vehicles like rain sensing wipers, or a rear wiper that turns on automatically when you select reverse and your front wipers are engaged. Dual sun visors, comfortable seats, heated steering wheels, cooled seats because I sweat like a pig LOL. For all that I will gladly deal with extra maintenance to avoid paying $80,000 for a newer car with similar features. I get a lot of enjoyment from driving interesting and well engineered vehicles. I also may be masochistic given the other cars I own... ('99 Cadillac DeVille, '06 Jaguar XJ8L, '05 Aston Martin DB9, '92 Jeep Wrangler, and a few others)

I bought one at 109k miles in 2018 and still have it today. It has had a few electrical issues and a new radiator ($1,100 repair for the rad), but other than that it runs surprisingly well and has never left us stranded. Just hit 160k miles. I got mine for $9k which was a great deal imo. It is fully paid for, super comfortable, and a beast in the snow. I do not plan on getting rid of it.

I hear ya! What year is yours? I've found the 2006-2009 to be the sweet spot for fewest issues. If you missed it, the '06 in this video got rear ended and I got a 2009 from auction and rebuilt it. We also picked up a green 2006 that suffered from a light engine fire that we're rebuilding for our 16 year old to drive. I have no plans to be without an L322 anytime soon!

I don't know much about the 1UZ-FE platform, but it's an interesting idea. My initial bias is to avoid car engines in SUVs, mainly because most SUV's benefit from torque over top end power, but for everyone that blasts an LS1 powered Jeep Wrangler, you'll find someone else who swears it's the greatest thing they've ever driven... I've never thought about it until your comment, but something like a 2UZ-FE does seem like it would be an awesome match for an L322. I wonder if it would be worth it though? The L322 Jag engine has 300hp and 325ft/lbs @ 4000. The 2UZ-FE varies, but figure 276hp and 313 ft/lbs @ 3400rpms. I think if I had the BMW 4.4L V8, a Toyota swap would make perfect sense and would be a massive upgrade in reliability. So far I've found the Jag 4.4 V8 to be a fantastic engine and I don't know that there's a compelling reason to swap it out, but I'm open to theories on that topic. On a side note.... when Jaguar comes along with an engine and it's a MASSIVE upgrade in reliability... it's time to re-evaluate your life :-)
