The L322 are very much the Range Rover du jour with Metcalfe and Clarkson constantly plugging them. The late Queen’s versions also nearly always had dual rear window controls on each rear door so she could open both rear windows for the dogs. Plus the seat belt ‘bong’ coded out to drive round Balmoral and Sandringham belt-free.

Clarkson and Metcalfe did a good job of pointing out just how practical these cars are. If you're willing to replace injectors that cost more than the car then it must be doing something right.

Had my 2005 l322 supercharged for 10 years and still enjoy driving it. Been pretty reliable. Other than servicing only had to replace suspension compressor and light check module. Was going to replace it a couple of years ago when rust started appearing round the rear arches. Bit the bullet and treated the car to a £3000 professional bodyshop repair. Still looks like new and saved £30,000 replacing it with a l405. Spent the £30,000 on a DB9 volante.

Got my 2011 4.4 tdv8 back in april, ive covered 11k miles in it since (now on 123k miles) - apart from an annoying dpf issue its been completely trouble free. Easily the best car ive ever had and always a joy to drive, even on our potholed country roads. Its also a distinct improvement in every area (apart from looks) on the 3.6 tdv8 i had a couple of years ago. Feels like a much better quality product, more refined and the adaptive dampers and gearbox really do make a difference. Averages 30-35mpg. These are gems

I also have a dark green (beige interior) car first owned by royalty - His Highness The Aga Khan. The car is a RHD 2002 Audi A8L finished in Aga Khan Green. As well as having many exclusive touches, what sets the car apart from other D2 long-wheelbases is the fact that it's got a factory-fitted S8 engine installed. Possibly the only S8 engine installed into a LWB D2 by Audi themselves. The car cost over £90k in 2002 and the engine swap at birth cost over £12k alone.

I own five of these, one of them just like the Queen's. When you can keep their electronics sorted out, I am repeatedly surprised at how well they can negotiate thin rural trails across uneven pastures, and then return you back home at the proverbial 'ton' on the highway:) With all their faults, when operating as intended, they turn out to be surprisingly comfortable and capable bits of kit. However, like the Queen did, I much regret the lend of the manual versions. (You know she drove, I believe, stick shift heavy ambulances during the War, what a magnificent monarch she was:)

It makes sense. The Queen was seldom seen without her trademark gloves and many said she loved to drive Range Rovers. I think it's clever to make everything extra large so they can be manipulated with gloves, especially in the winter. And yes, I've been to London in December and it was f-f-freezing cold! Some years ago, I drove, and subsequently bought, a 1955 Humber Super Snipe. Prior to the gentleman I bought it from, it had had one previous owner; who bought it new to compete in the Monte Carlo Rally as a private entry. (Something one could do back then). After performing quite well, it was used by it owner daily from his home in Mayfair, London. I had been privileged to meet the original owner many times at shows and club meets. I think that was a lucky find, and it was certainly a lovely car. From the Monte Carlo to Mayfair _ quite a life. The owner in question? A gentleman by the name of Sir Stirling Moss.

I’m pretty sure I’ve seen that car and it’s L404 successor doing the regular run between Taplow Railway Station and Windsor Castle. Not widely known, Taplow was the stop used by the queen when she travelled by the royal train. Being presumably unable to get onto the Windsor and Eton line (or couldn’t be bothered), the Queen often alighted at Taplow then got the Range Rover to take her back to Windsor; no police escort, just the queen sat behind the driver and the car doing the short distance on its own.

Charming insights, thanks for sharing, I always liked that model, love Range Rovers but can't afford the reliability issues. I'm of an age that a lazy V8, auto, with bags of comfort would be a boon though. By and large I try to avoid special or rare cars that one is an out and out custodian of, takes the fun out of it (I've had one or two).I'm not sure that there are that many royalists these days though (maybe a museum will snap it up🤔🤔). I did once start to enquire about a Range Rover "classic", but it had a day bed arrangement in the back. Strange modification I thought to myself - all several years before the balloon went up - I made further enquiries, and found out the car had belonged to a certain Jimmy SaEvil (he was pretty pally with the royals too) I never liked the bloke, he had a vibe about him, so chose not to pursue the car further (even with offers of a refurbished back seat etc), as the vibe felt off. Then the balloon went up and my hunch was right about the car! Yuk, I dread to think!

I love the videos as they are and I wouldn't change anything but it would be reeeaallly more nice if I could also just be able to look at the whole car in its entirety (for more than the current 20 or so seconds of cumulative footage/photos).

Man, if I was in LR Marketing, I'd have done an HRH spec that precisely mimicked this (sans the extra grab handles) with no options available. This spec is pure class.

Far more interesting would be her Landrover 110, a V8 manual with some very specific options. The Queen drove herself in it a lot, the last time I saw it close up it was probably the best 1983 car I had seen for a very long time.
@andrewmarshall9340
@andrewmarshall9340 8 ай бұрын
Would one of those options be the rear wiper, inside the windscreen? Apparently this was done to clear the screen of condensation from corgis being transported. Quite likely the only car in the world so equipped!

Maybe it's different for JLR products now but when I worked for Landrover all Royal family cars had 2 identical cars and for 6 months of the year 1 was used the other 6 months the identical was used only difference registration plate so 1 car was always at Landrover the other with the queen. I certainly would have thought all servicing would be done by Landrover at the factory so presumably things may have changed and it was maintained by nearest Landrover. Facility as this car would have come directly from Landrover not through a dealer. I'm sure there is pictures of Prince Phillip driving a green L322 as he only gave up driving when he had the accident maybe 2 years before he passed away . So possibly driven this car. Unless grill at front has been changed but it will have had the small flashing blue lights attached behind the grill to show it's security etc royal family. Regarding Princess Diana's RS Turbo it was taken back after she had it a few years and was given a new reg plate and.it was not only the only black S1 RS Turbo it had the front grill of an Orion 1.6.i Ghia the security blue lights.fitted better to the Orion grill.

We visited Sandringham in December 2008. A dark green Land Rover approached from a side road on our left and indicated right. this car gave way to us. I looked at the driver who was lone female and wearing a head scarf, I said, oh look , she looks like the Queen" as we got closer, it was OMG , it is the Queen. She was driving around on her own 😁😁

I’m guessing you’d require a picture of the Queen in or exiting the car to increase the value significantly. Otherwise it’s just one of the fleet some royals “probably” used.

Nice video as usual! I own a L322 TDV8, I'm very happy with it (so far) unfortunately it is not green but in very dark burgundy, with cream interior (this was non negotiable). I also have a Scimitar Se5a, so 2 models of the Royal fleet 😉.

Great video as always. I wonder if its bereft of usual VIP accessories such as armour plated bodywork and windows etc which would have added significant weight, and made it a bit more challenging for a older slightly built person to drive?
@topleybird2443

By the mid 2000s armour plating tech was probably already good enough for this not to be an issue with a big engine diesel SUV like this. Also with recent-ish safety features like crumple zones and specialised bodywork I’d reckon the regular doors would already be plenty heavy even without the steel plate and aramid fitted ballistic glass.

@@topleybird2443 so what is the reason the beast still have a weight of eight to 10 tons. are you saying they are using old crap, that can be penetrated 10 times more easy then modern armor ?
@topleybird2443
@topleybird2443 7 ай бұрын
@@Hansen710Because The Beast (I’m assuming you’re referring to the yank presidential limo) has protection requirements that far outstrip most regular armouring guidelines. For one, it’s hermetically sealed from the outside with an air pump system and aircraft-level pressurised doors (which are more like bulkheads), which no other armoured car in the world has.

I ordered a new Land Rover 110. They said it would take 6 months to deliver. After a year they said sorry another 6 months. So I needed a car to run about in so I bought a Range Rover L322 and if you’re going to do that and only want it for 6 months you may as well have the full fat version. 5ltr V8 supercharged Autobiography. I loved it so much. You put your foot down and it is as if the hand of God comes down and shoves you up the road with 500 bhp and in perfect silence and wonderful opulence. Even the headlining is beautiful stitched leather. I finally received my 110 and it wasn’t even close to the perfection of the L322 so after putting a few hundred miles on it I flogged and I’m keeping the Range Rover!

Yes, it may have been owned by the Royal Household but, did the late HM The Queen actually drive it? It say probably not. Yes, she may have been chauffeured in it but that’s about it. Her own personal Range Rover, the one she actually drove herself, was a 58 plate slightly earlier model. The reg of that one was CK58 NPJ. There are many photos around of her actually driving it around Balmoral and Sandringham.
