We continue on through "The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust" with the first three songs off side 2... and wow. This man really does surround himself with the best. Mick and Woody are just fantastic on these three tracks. So is Bowie of course but, they kinda stole the show for me. Such a damn good record.

@@L33ReactsAbout 1990 I saw that Mick Ronson was playing with Ian Hunter at a cowboy bar in Northside of Fort Worth that night, so I went, alone, paid at the door. I was so glad I did. It was a very comfortable atmosphere, and after the show the musicians didn’t disappear; they hung out talking to everyone and drinking longnecks of beer. Classic. P.S. Happy late birthday

I still say you should hear "The Laughing Gnome" from 1967. If only to highlight how much David Bowie and his music evolved in such a short period of time. 😊 Interestingly, this song became a hit in the UK when reissued in 1973 to exploit Bowie's breakthrough success with Ziggy Stardust. If you ever go through another Bowie album, I hope it will be "Hunky Dory". This album was released immediately prior to Ziggy Stardust. Bowie had been varying his persona so much since the mid 60s, that RCA offered little promotion for Hunky Dory and its lead single "Changes", wary that Bowie would transform his image once again shortly after. So, despite very positive press reviews, Hunky Dory initially sold poorly and failed to chart. Once again, after the commercial breakthrough of the Ziggy Stardust album in 1972, Hunky Dory garnered renewed interest and was awarded the success it truly deserved. 😊 Just put my suggestion on "the list". That list gets bigger and bigger everyday, but is bound to make for some awesome personal listening experiences in the future! 😀

I also requested Lady Stardust before I realized you were already doing the Ziggy album lol! I paired it with the T. Rex song (you haven't done yet) because it's about the lead singer of T. "The Fall" is the next cut, Lee - you're right. The closest we get to a straight-out story, and a probably common development of a band wherein one member becomes the "special man". I love it.

@@lauraallen55 I always find myself shedding a tear for Marc when I hear Bowie's Everyone Says 'Hi'. There are many theories about who this song is about, but whatever the truth is the fact it was released on the 25th anniversary of Marc's death always reminds me of him.
@lauraallen55
@lauraallen55 Ай бұрын
@@PaulMDove2 I read something about that one wherein David was quoted as saying it was about loss, and that when he wrote it he had been thinking about his father whom he'd lost so long before as well as close friends he'd lost. It being released on the anniversary of Marc's death could possibly be coincidental, but I don't think it was. It is a sad one. I feel it when I listen, too. Elton John's Empty Garden about John Lennon has the same effect on me. :(

You have to look at “Hunky Dory” next…it is Bowies best album and was the release just before Ziggy Stardust. It is a treasure chest of really great songs..I would like to suggest “Changes”, “Oh you Pretty Things”, “Life On Mars”, “Andy Warhol”, “The Queen Bitch” and finally my 2 particular favourites from the album “Quicksand” and “The Bewlay Brothers”. This was the album of a long hot summer just after I had finished my A levels and before I started University…lasted from June to October , we partied non stop, Played music (this was the newly found album by me and my friends)…and we had just found ‘weed’. Magical times for a young lad in his late teens…just about to become an ‘responsible adult’….(eventually……)……oh by the way, I am still waiting to become that adult and I have now retired and am drawing my pension 😂😂😂😂😂 !!!!!!!

Interesting that you said that Ziggy was the closest character to the real David Bowie cause I've always thought that as well! He did go through a rise & a fall kind of during that 18 month period of tours. He got famous really quickly & his manager was booking shows non stop. He would sometimes do 2 shows a day. By the US leg of the tour he was already exhausted & started to go a bit crazy so he just said to his manager that he wants to be done with it. So he abruptly just ended it one night which is what was filmed for the Ziggy Stardust Concert Film.The only other people that knew of that plan were Mick Ronson & Bowie's hairstylist/costumer who eventually became Micks wife. The other band members had no idea! So really he manifested his rise & fall as a character & band lol

You are doing these perfect ! 🎸 Keeping the songs LP by LP is almost crucial to so many Bowie LP’s . Everything up to and including “Scary Monsters” (1980) . Those songs all belong together . “Space Oddity” (1969) … Then go WAY back and check out all the early “David Jones” / Bowie stuff that led up to that LP . GREAT JOB ! 🎸😎🎥

Bowie did have a fall, he had serious drug problems and very well might not have survived. He said somewhere that a lot of this era was missing from his memory. Also he lost a lot of money in this period, he became so big so fast and had a rough ride for a while. But he came out the other end in one piece and I'm so grateful for it. I'm not certain but I think by the late 70s he had things under control.

Bowie's own rise and fall sort of mirrored Ziggy's in a way when he began to regret that he wasn't a Rock and Roll star but had instead created his own genre(s). In the late 80s he maybe thought he was losing himself and decided to return to rock and he formed the band Tin Machine. They were never critically acclaimed but, in my opinion, this was the period that sowed the seeds of a lot of what followed. Specifically, in relation to his desire to return to rock, is the Tin Machine track You Belong in Rock n' Roll. My own favourites are Under the God, I Can't Read, Baby Can Dance and of course the eponymous track Tin Machine (a favourite on the juke box in my local pub at the time it was released).

Bowie's "competition" was a flaming homosexual calling himself, "Jobriath", a stylish pianist, and the first rock personality to "come out", so he didn't rise to the level of appreciation his music deserved. His band was remarkable, as was Jobriath's music. Two albums and a ton of tragedy, but one of a kind, and brilliant. His second album, Creatures of the Street, is, imo, the better of the two albums, and worth a listen, Lee.
