Yasmine Naghdi performs the Second Variation in The Royal Ballet's production of La Bayadere.
An iconic 19th-century Russian ballet, La Bayadère was originally performed at the Bolshoi Theatre in St Petersburg in 1877, and was regularly performed within the former Soviet Union throughout the 20th century. It remained unknown in the West until the Kirov Ballet toured with the Kingdom of the Shades scene in 1961. Natalia Makarova saw La Bayadère as a child in Leningrad and created this production in 1980. It was first performed by The Royal Ballet in 1989.
The Kingdom of the Shades scene in Act II is one of the ballet's highlights, in which a series of arabesques across the moonlit stage demonstrates the strength of the corps de ballet and the beauty of Marius Petipa's choreography. The ballet also contains roles of very different styles for two ballerinas in Nikiya and Gamzatti, a spectacular virtuoso solo for the Bronze Idol, and stunning pas de deux for Solor with both Nikiya and Gamzatti.

@@giovanniportelli8764 I did check her out and Letestu is very good. I liked the tempo better in her version. It was only 15 seconds faster, but 15 seconds of a variation this technical and demanding can be a lifetime. Still, I personally agree with Ta Mei . . . Naghdi’s performance was like a master class in how it’s done. Brava!

Yasmine has quickly become one of my favorite ballerinas. Most versions I've seen of the second shade, the ballerina has the same facial expression throughout the whole variation, and they just go through the steps. Yasmine starts off serious just as the music is controlled and tense, and you can see her change in demeanor as the pace picks up. She smiles more, and genuinely looks like she's starting to have fun along with the music. She's just a gem. Please more videos of her ROH!

And she looks so Indian in that scene. If it's not for the fact that she's Persian, it's that her coloring make for a very convincing Nikiya because La Bayadere is set in ancient India pre-colonization.

I think the "character" is just a shade, an image. IMHO, none of those shades are "having fun". Not even Nikya, whose image "dances" with her beloved Solor. I don't see any reason for smiling at any point of this variation. Any of the variations of the whole scene for that case.

if working from home without proper floor, you should probably focus on barre work and avoid jumping. As for variations, if you are going to attempt anything, look for variations that are slower and require control and balance-- rather than those requiring jumps and speed. Also check out the barres that different ballet companies are offering online during lockdown.

exballet202 yes, I’ve definitely been avoiding jumping and being cautious. As for the barre classes, I think it’s incredible and very exciting for a student dancer that there’s so many companies coming forward to give them to the public. Today I’m taking one of Tamara Rojo’s. Thanks for the advice! ✨stay safe

@@Lalegendaire Interesting. I've never seen this done as anything but the 3rd. But someone just posted a Bolshoi Shades act that had Solor get caught in the temple destruction---they didn't do a whole act as in Makarova's production, he just came out after the rest of Shades to a scrim that looked like the temple entrance and then more scrim that showed the building falling apart. So I guess there are more Bayadere versions in heaven and earth than are dreamt of in my philosophy!

Of course! Even most of the best dancers aren't born with those ultra-flexible 'banana' feet. There are lots of fairly easy exercises that can be done to improve flatness, the Ballerinas By Night KZfaq channel has some good videos on it. It's also worth noting that the grass isn't always greener on the other side - dancers with high arched feet also have to work on strengthening their ankles to support their high arches too.
