Frederick Ashton’s joyful ballet La Fille mal gardée (The Wayward Daughter) features some of his most brilliant and romantic choreography. Principals of The Royal Ballet Natalia Osipova (Lise) and Steven McRae (Colas) perform the Adagio pas de deux for Lise and Colas in Act I scene 2.
Frederick Ashton’s final full-length ballet La Fille mal gardée (The Wayward Daughter) is one of his most joyous creations, inspired by his love for the Suffolk countryside. It is based on a 1789 French ballet originally created by Jean Dauberval; John Lanchbery created the music for Ashton’s ballet from Ferdinand Hérold’s 1828 score. La Fille mal gardée was a resounding success on its premiere in 1960 and has remained a firm favourite in The Royal Ballet’s repertory.
The ballet displays some of Ashton’s most virtuoso choreography, most strikingly in the series of energetic pas de deux that express the youthful passion of Lise and Colas. The ballet is also laced with exuberant good humour, in a whirl of dancing chickens, grouchy guardians and one very unwilling suitor. Ashton affectionately incorporated elements of national folk dance into his choreography, from a Lancashire clog dance to a maypole dance, making La Fille mal gardée - despite its title - emphatically English. Osbert Lancaster’s colourful designs heighten the production’s delightful pastoral wit.
Frederick Ashton created more than one hundred works during his lifetime (1904-88). For further information, please visit www.frederickashton.org.uk/

My toes hurt just WATCHING Natalia be a human maypole. The amount of balance and coordination to stay on your toes while eight people spin you around via ribbon BOGGLES MY MIND.

Natalia Osipova, please read/see this! I am just a young girl and I have dreams of being like you and dancing at the royal ballet. You are like the best dancer in the world. You are just so, beautiful. When I look at your face, I immediately think “Natalia Osipova, she’s so good”. Your feet are amazing. You work so hard and you push yourself. That’s what we all love about you. I want you to understand that you’re not just and ordinary human. You are a legend. Out of every single dancer ever, you are one of the best. You have made it so far. You do everything perfect. You have achieved way more than you think. There is something about you that just shines. I saw you dance and I said I need to be just like her. So I did. I tried my hardest in a Nutcracker audition, I pushed my self to the limits. I finally understood that when you work hard it actually pays off. Because I ended up getting the lead role, Clara. At ten years old I’m pretty happy that you got me that spot. Because without you I wouldn’t have been Clara, or anything. I have been dancing for nearly nine years. Honestly, remember me because I hope that one day I will be a professional dancer and be like you. So when I am older look back and say, I wonder if she made it that far? I wouldn’t have been a dancer without your encouragement without even speaking directly to me. You are absolutely amazing. I love you. Love from Canada!! -Scarlett P.S I know you speak mostly Russian so I hope you can understand all this. By the way I am learning Russian, because you inspire me so much. Ok now... -Scarlett 💕💕💕 @Royal Opera House

This! One the hand it’s admirable how strong her feet are, given how soft her shoes always look. There’s a video somewhere where she shows how she adjusts the shoes to her liking (e.g. cutting the vamp and sewing it loosely together), explaining she can’t find the right shoes b/c of bunions etc. While I understand difficult feet and precise needs, I always think it’s a shame she doesn’t have better shoes, because they always look floppy, and somewhat distract from her otherwise beautiful lines. could someone at the Royal Ballet/ Freed / Grishko (don’t know her brand) please find her a good cobbler?! How can a ballerina of her merit not be given a perfectly fitting shoe? It’s also about her health! If she can’t have them, who can?

I’m sure this is just as nerve wracking for the corps. Ribbons are always a beast to keep untangled, but more than that, do you want to be the person who pulled too hard and knocked over Natalia Osipova?

Do yall know what she does to hers shoes that makes them look all bunchy in the front (like this 1:50 or 2:00). I can't figure it out. If you know. Does it have a purpose?

Don't worry about the shoes, folks, watch the dancing! If you are interested in how a ROH dancer prepares her shoes, the video of Yasmine Naghdi on KZfaq explains a lot. Hint - it involves craft knives and glue, and by the time she's finished she hasn't much sole left in her shoe. It's also very interesting when she's talking about dancing in different cities with different climates.

This is my dirty little secret. I own this version on DVD because I absolutely adore Steven and Natalia. I also own the Acosta/Nuñez too. But my non dance-don't know squat about ballet friends loved the Acosta/Nuñez version. Their other worldly chemistry just sucks everyone in. My friend will watch that entire performance. The Steven/Natalia version is about 3/4 ths before they call it quits.
